Nexus 5: First Impressions & Reviews

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

How was it before the Franco kernel? Did it still improve over time?

Yes, for the first two weeks I wasn't rooted. By the end of the first week I was approaching 5 hours screen on time. So... if you don't want to root, you'll still be okay.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

I've had my N5 for about two months now, and I think I can give my impressions about this phone, since the first days excitement has gone. I'm coming from a HTC Desire HD, which I liked in some aspects, and hated in (many) others.

The phone seems well built, even if it is more fragile than my previous one, which I dropped several times without any fears of breaking it.
The N5 is a big phone, and it's not easy to use with one hand, but the screen is big, and nearly all the front surface is taken by the screen itself, so there's nothing to complain. Thanks to its slightly rounded back it is easy to hold, though the white version (which I chose) is much more slippery than the black one.

The screen is just awesome: its color reproduction is one of the best I've ever seen, and its brightness lets you read even under direct sunlight; the only drawback is about the viewing angles, which aren't bad, but could be better. Another minor issue is the auto brightness calibration: the display is always too bright indoors. While waiting for an official fix by Google, I discovered a flashable .zip file containing a more conservative brightness profile, which is perfect IMHO.
The touchscreen is very sensitive, too: it outperforms many Android phones, feels even better than the iPhone 5's and equal to the iPhone 4 and 4s' one.

Everybody is complaining about the camera, but I find that N5's shots are good enough to replace a point & shoot camera in most situations. I was surprised by their level of detail in low light condition: their definition was extremely good, and the OIS helped a lot. However, I can confirm that even after updating to 4.4.2, the phone doesn't always focus the right subject at the first try, though the time to focus has been significantly reduced.

The Nexus 5's speaker is not particularly loud, but after the latest software updates it's similar to the one of many others Android phones (not the HTC One, though :D ), and it sounds less tinny than the Desire HD's one. Being on the bottom side of the phone, you can perfectly hear it even when the device is on a soft surface.

Battery life is what I expected from a modern smartphone: I can easily get to the end of the day without needing to recharge. In particular, its standby power consumption is negligible (<1% per hour), and I can use the phone up to 4-5 hours before it runs out of charge. Thanks to the RGB notification LED and its customizability, I know which kind of notification you received without needing to turn the screen on, which helps you improving battery life.

I didn't mention the smoothness and the overall performance of the Nexus 5 in many daily tasks because I think there's no need to ;) Instead, I'd like to invite everyone who's using Android 4.4 to try enabling ART: this new runtime really makes the UI snappier and smoother, at a cost of few megabytes of RAM and drive space, and I think it's the most important innovation of the latest major Android release.

Overall, this phone is amazing: I usually can point out the main flaws of a product after some usage, but in this case it's really hard to tell one. The worst aspects of the Nexus 5 (battery, camera and speaker) are decent, and everything else is better than average. I would recommend this phone to anyone, especially to those who want to leave the Apple ecosystem and give Android a try: Google's operating system has never been so intuitive and easy to learn, and this is the perfect phone to start with.

Care to pass along that zip for the auto brightness? I've also noticed that it is a bit brighter than it should be when indoors

Sure, here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2467245&d=1387654710
And here's the zip to restore the stock settings:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2467257&d=1387654888

They are working on the stock 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 releases, and haven't been tested on others ROMs.
Anyway, flash at your own risk.
Thanks to PhilipL (XDA forum) for the flashable zips. I didn't post the direct link to the original thread because I don't know if it's against the rules of this forum.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

Ahhhh. Where to start???

I had a Galaxy S4 but I gave it to my girlfriend and I ordered the Nexus 5 and I have been using it since Monday.

Today is Friday and lets see here...I will try to keep this from getting all over the place.

These are the Things that Worried me based on tons and tons of reviews I read and also the tons and tons of youtube video reviews I watched.

Battery - Some of my most recent devices have been The Nexus S 4G, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S4... my biggest concern about the Nexus 5 was standby battery life or whatever you call it (pardon me I dont know alot of the technical jargon and specifications and what not but I will try my best). Meaning I am the type of person that when I go to sleep around 11pm I charge my phone fully and then disconnect it and just set it aside for when I wake up. With the Nexus 5 I did this and I woke up at 6am after going to sleep around 11pm (with the screen around a little bit more than half in brightness because it is a super bright screen) and the battery bar (I dont have the percentage) was still full. After checking my e-mail and texts the battery finally showed a tiny discharge indicating it was probably at 90something percent. Once I got to work I used my phone on my breaks very very heavily (email, texts, twitter, games, downloading apps, browsing the web...) on purpose during my breaks and lunch and it was still going strong. Around 3pm the phone went all the way down to 15%. I charged it for the first time around this time for like 20-30 minutes and when I get home I was at 50something percent. This is about the same process I had with the Galaxy S4 so I would say the battery really has not been that much different than the Galaxy S4. Obviously any phone that gets used non stop for a span of 15 minutes or an hour is going to die really really quick but The Nexus 5 really surprised me. THE BATTERY IS NOT AS HORRIBLE AS PEOPLE MAKE IT OUT TO BE. I use the "ART" setting for applications because I read that helped and the brightness is at halfway because trust me that is all you need most of the time. I have done nothing else really. Everything is stock. No root, no nothing. Another day this week I used the phone LIGHTLY throughout my day and I was able to make it home with like more than half of my battery. I just received a couple calls, replied to a couple texts and read a couple news articles.

Camera - The Camera is not bad, it just obviously is not as great as the Galaxy S4s 13 megapixel camera. I noticed the S4 pictures looked way more crisper but I mean the Nexus 5 takes good pictures too. I havent taken too many pictures so I cant comment as much as I did about the battery but I mean the camera is pretty good and I am big on taking pictures so....

Sound/Speakers - Alot of the reviews I read and watched totally killed the Nexus on this. It is weird because I tried to notice whether it was bad sound just by listening the ringtones. But you know what I noticed? That the stock ringtones for some reason have a very low volume. I downloaded some other ringtones that it seemed louder and I use them now and they are LOUD. I listened to music and watched videos and I mean the sound is pretty good too. Again, not enough for me to complain once about it. I played Clash of Clans and the volume is great too. I watched a video review where a guy did not like the speaker placement cause when he games his hand blocks the sound? That never happens to me. The sound on games is so good that I normally just run it halfway.

Call Quality - Another thing I was afraid would be horrible judging by the reviews. But people sound great on this phone and I ask them and I also sound loud and clear (I am on Sprint). I have not dropped a call and again voices sound so crisp.

Storage - I got the 32gb version and I installed a whole bunch of old apps and put some old pictures and I still have like 20something gigs so storage is great too.

Screen/Body - The screen is beautiful. It is sooooo bright that I find myself always running the brightness at half. The phone also feels great in the hand and the hardware is just so well made in my opinion.

I touched on the most criticized things and honestly I have yet to think to myself "Oh this is what they were talking about" quite the contrary I say "Man nothing is wrong with the speakers/battery/camera"

Like I told my friend... I really have found no real reason to complain and make me regret my purchase but if I muuuust tell you things I dislike here they are:

I dont like that Google Now is always on the left side and I cant instead have home screens to the left.
The big Icons are kind of a drag to look at sometimes because alot of the lesser known apps have huge pixelated icons.
The hangouts app is usable but I much rather have an ICS type native stock messaging app.

I zoomed through this but I just threw in some stuff and hopefully its helpful for those still deciding. I bought my Nexus 5 off the Play Store and activated it on Sprint.
Any questions and I will gladly answer them as I get on the forum.

***one more thing I realized I did not comment on THIS PhONE IS SMOOTH. The phone is so fast you can swith through apps seamlessly. Games. Apps. Social Networks. Web. Stop and switch to the other is soooo fast. Everything is just sooooo smooth. I had the Galaxy S4 and my biggest gripe was the lag. Try to do something fast on the S4 and it was lag city. It was frustrating. This phone allows you to do things soooo fast it really is amazing.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

Finally got mine today and I've instantly fallen in love with it. I wanted to wait before jumping on this one cause I really didn't like the N4 but this is hands down the best nexus I've ever owned.

Just got my Nexus 5 tonight, about two hours ago. First thoughts are wow, this thing feels great in the hand and the screen is amazing. I'm coming from an iPhone 5s and a Note 3, so the smaller footprint is nice. I really like the raw Android experience also. This is my first look at raw Android and now I realize all the garbage that is out on by every other manufacturer. It's really to early to know for sure but so far I love this phone!

Just switched from a Note 3 on AT&T to the N5 on T-Mobile and I am very impressed!

I am impressed with the phone and with T-Mobile's updated LTE in Dallas. I am loving vanilla android, all the Google apps just work together seamless. I was kinda of hesitant to move to a N5 coming from the note 3, but I am loving it more.

Wife and son also got N5 and they have no complaints. Well done Google/LG.

Had my nexus for four days. So far so good. I've owned three android phones and this is the only one that feels like an equal to the iPhone based on software.

What were the other Android phones you owned?

Moto Droid and S3. S3 was close but touchwiz on ICS was pretty slow and I wasn't sure how long I'd have to wait for Jelly Bean.

Edit: totally meant to wrote you. Not used to Tapatalk.

I can't imagine how slow touchwiz must have been on ICS. But on 4.3, my Galaxy S3 runs smoothly with Nova Launcher on it.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

So far I'm loving this phone. Much more so than the N4. I felt the N4, in my opinion, felt a little chinsy. The rear glass made me worried every time I set it down in my counter tops. Not so with this. I have the black nexus 5. Software wise I'm surprised as well; very quick. Coming from an iPhone 5 I'm very pleased. Camera seems better and the battery is alright. I also got terrible battery life with my iPhone 5 with iOS 7. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this one.

I am curious if you are still loving this phone? I have an iPhone 5 and have been thinking of trying the N5.

I've had this phone for a few months. I came from an iPhone 4s and switching is the best thing I've done... Just sell your iPhone on eBay and that's half the money toward a nexus already. For the price, it's a beast. For everyday usage the nexus is perfect. No glitches, super fast, supports loads of bands, future proof and will definitely not lag! For gaming its also awesome! Won't lag at all, unless you are playing heavy games like N64 emulators, but you can just lower the game quality and is pretty simple to overclock the device, and it's perfect. Only downsides are the speakers, which are really bad in my opinion. Barely better than iPhone 4s ones. I've compared it to my friends Blackberry Z10 and Samsung S3's and it's embarrassing. Can be bad when outside and someone's ringing you. Also the battery is mediocre. Some people get good, some people get bad... If you search online for battery saving tips like I did, you will easily be able to get through a day or two. Overall, there are hundreds of more positives then negatives, and the nexus 5 is the best device I've owned. Ever. Amazing device and I'm sticking with it as long as possible...

Thanks for the input. I found out the other day that I can't even purchase this for Verizon :-( Really wish that wasn't the case

Thinking of giving the Droid Maxx a shot as that and the Moto X are the closest to stock Android on Verizon.

Can't really comment on them devices because I know nothing about them... Haven't heard a bad word about the Moto X so I say go for it, try something new, give it a spin :D

Are you using the stock ringtones? Those are awfully quiet. You can download louder ones with Zedge or make your own.

Re: Nexus 5 First Impressions & Reviews

Hi guys!
Can I get a little input on my dilemma, please?
I am planning to buy a new phone...soon. I've looked at the N5 and as an android virgin, I liked what I saw. Was about to buy it back in December, but getting my hands on one outside the google store's area is hard and expensive as hell so I decided to wait a bit. My 6yo nokia e51 has started to fall apart recently, but now I wonder if I should wait for the N6... I could probably hold out 'till it's release. I don't like charging my phone every single day (the e51 still lives a week happily) and I heard the N6 might get bigger batteries and I plan on using a phone for more than 4 years at least. What do you guys think, is it worth waiting for the N6?
