Nexus 5: Naked or Case?

Naked or Case?

Stark naked! I hate cases. I hate screen protectors. I'll simply buy another Nexus 5 if I were to damage or lose it. Good grief, I've spent more on a Saturday night dinner and concert.

Personally I feel that manufacturers have developed their phones for optimum ergonomic use and by putting it in a case, it makes them feel un-natural to use. The only time I put my Nexus 5 into a bumper case is when I am doing outdoor activities, day to day my phone stays naked.

I'm with you on this one. During the day when I am out for work(I travel a bit) I use a tpu or Nexus case, but when I am home or the weekend, I use it without a case. I do however have a wood skin on the back from dbrand.

I have been thinking about maybe going naked and just keeping it in a sleeve or a pouch when carrying around.

Well, last night as I was charging my Nexus 5 I decided to take the plunge yet again and "strip" it of its case. I have been using it all day today without a case and plan on doing so all weekend. I may just end up keeping it naked. It feels just so good like that.

Well I been going naked on and off with my iPhone 4 and Samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket but ever since my s3, s4 ( sort of ) and nexus 5 I have pretty much gone naked... My Galaxy s4 does have a s view cover which I liked which adds maybe a few ounces more which I don't mind. My iPhone while naked survived a 4-6 foot drops on concrete floors, Hail storms and even throwing it across the room in a bag ( I forgot it was in my bag lol ) with only 1 big scratch on the bottom part of the glass left of the home button which I didn't care about. My s2 skyrocket I bought an otterbox defender but I always took it off and on to get rid of the dirt under the screen and eventually just used it naked with no issues ( Doesn't use Gorilla glass but some Samsung Glass). My s3 which I used for about 8 months pretty much spotless except for a few dings on the bottom where I dropped it because I moved the table it was charging on top of lol.

All that being said I am wondering should I go naked with my nexus 5 or buy a case for it since I really do hate scratches but love it naked but also hate screen protectors ...I have a pouch for it which I bought off amazon and it fits ok but I find it annoying since it is also my music player

I had just decided not to use case that stay on the phone anymore. I have a gold iPhone and it is really a shame to cover it up with anything. I do use a sleeve to carry it around in. But when I use it it is naked.

Nothing wrong with a case, but for me its like putting plastic on all my furniture... Use it like its Stolen!!!

I don't mind the wallet type because the one I have (which is purple) utilizes the sleep wake sensor where I never have to press the power button every time I open it. I love that! :p

I've used a wallet case for my last two phones, and I really want a sleep-wake sensor. Like Cassie, most people who have that love it. Flip it open and the device is on, flip it shut and it's off.

It would seem though that almost all of the wallet cases available for the Nexus 5 will only hold a card or two, so I might have to go back to carrying my wallet.

Receiving my white 32GB next week, thanks to those who spoke of safely going naked, I'll feel like I can take my time to find the right case with the desired sensor. And who knows, maybe one that doubles as a proper wallet replacement. Eyes are open!

Nekkid at home/ not at work.
Spigen slim armor case at work.
I hate using a case with this phone, likely because all of the cases I've seen/had blow.

Honestly I was pretty rough with my iPhone 4 and Samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket and had no issues with my iPhone 4 and took about a really hard drop on concrete floor face first to crack my s2 screen... It was like 5 Degrees outside and I as badly underdressed and dropped my phone at least 10-20 times with no screen damage and took about a hard drop on concrete on the 21st one and I believed the bezel is what saved my S2 ... That being said I believe any case that prevents the screen touching the floor is good enough :)

Re: Naked of Case?

i think it's ok for not having a case, but i think screen protector is an essential thing to protect Nexus 5. i am using this ultra clear screen protector screen protector and my experience is good. :-$
hope this help.

I started with spigen case (the clear back one) and I didn't like the buttons so I got a slickwraps. Came yesterday and I only lasted one day and put the case back on but it looks awesome with the wrap and clear back. Also have you guys seen this Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1291150435/reelklip-the-worlds-smartest-cell-phone-protection it seems like some of you guys could have interest in it. If you get in on early bird it's only $19

Four months in and still stark naked. Pocket carry with nothing else in the pocket. Gorilla Glass 3 doing its job with not a hint of a scratch. I hate cases and hate screen protectors even more. I love it naked as the designers meant it to be.

Received the Google bumper case a few days ago, and have used my phone without any case for a couple of weeks before that. Feels somewhat bulky, and I have to press much harder the lock and volume buttons. My main concern is scratching the rear camera glass when putting the phone on a hard surface. Feels like I re-upgraded my phone upon removing the case.

I also think that it is a matter of investment. How much does a case cost versus the likelihood that you would drop the phone and damage it and how it plays into the resale value of the phone. If you don't plan on selling your device and you rarely drop your phone, then it may not be a worthy investment for you to purchase a case.

Re: Naked of Case?

Cased in a Spigen Nexus 5 Case SLIM [Ultra Fit] $8 at Amazon
Doesn't add too much bulk, protects corners if dropped. And it was. On the corner. On tile from 30+ inches. No damage. To anything.

Ha, I love when people say "Just don't drop your phone!" ..classic.

Anyway, I've always gone naked with other phones but the Nexus 5 has this very thin, raised edge all around the screen that feels uncomfortable against the ear. Esp when you have to do the shoulder holding thing. (Yes, I have a headset, btw but I don't want to always *have* to use it for comfort). The official case has a nice, flat edge that feels much more comfortable against the ear. Tried the Spigen neo hybrid case but the edge has a triangle profile and is uncomfortable compared to the Google case.

Actually find if funny that every review of that Spigen talked about how if feels in the hand but not a single one talked about how it feels against the ear. Guess with more people preferring to text over talking on the phone, that's not too surprising.

So yeah, comfort is my primary reason. The second is that terrifying drop test everyone keeps referencing...

Left my phone on top of the car as I drove onto the freeway and this was the end result. No case could have prevented the damage. I had the Spigen Neo Hybrid and screen protector installed when this happened.

Lesson learned to not leave it on the car and drive off.

I know this won't apply to everyone but for me personally this phone is already a bit too big but I am living with it because everything else about it is wonderful! But yeah, any kind of case that would actually offer drop protection increases the size of the phone up to something that is not ok for me. I tried a quicksand case (from ebay) for a little while. It was actually a pretty decent case but I found myself not liking my phone as much and at that point I might as well have purchased something else or stuck with my GNex.

I did find a 0.3mm case on ebay that worked have worked if the texture was grippy but it felt like it was made of the cheapest hard plastic ever and made the phone too slippery. If anyone knows of a rubbery/soft-touch 0.3mm case for the Nexus 5 please let me know :-)

I am planning on getting a screen protector + camera lens protector combo from slickwraps. I think that is at least a good compromise.

So I've dropped my case-less N5 twice from about waist-high, on the garage cement and on the street. Both times, it ended up glass-side down. Fortunately, each time it first hit my leg and/or foot which definitely reduced the impact and possibly saved the screen from cracking. I put a screen protector on in December only for a Hawaii trip and had planned to remove it, but luckily I kept it on.

I just now took the screen protector off since it was scuffed up a bit. There are maybe 3 hard-to-detect nicks along the edges of the phone. The screen and rear of the phone look like new. All things considered, I am very lucky.

I'll re-apply another screen protector, but I'm still not getting a case. Just don't like 'em. I'll try to be more careful, but if I do cause more severe damage in the future, I'll just own it.
