Nexus 5 owners with T-Mobile $30 Prepaid Plan Thread

Hi all
I've been on this plan for about a week or so with a Nexus 5 32G. I love it. I added an extra $10 for an additional 100 minutes just in case I need them. This is my first Android phone, up until last week I was still using my Nokia e-62. I noticed that when I have WIFI on, the carrier signal does not show LTE. However when I turn WIFI off the carrier signal shows the LTE symbol. Is this happening because there is so little room in the notification area or have I set something to not have LTE when WIFI is on? Thanks.

Very bummed. I have gotten more no connection and stuck on loading screens on websites/apps than ever before.

It's the LTE network even tho it shows bars it doesn't work as shown on speed test. I switched to 3G under settings and it uses hspa which is what I had on N4 & this thread loaded up quickly

Just to clarify, you're saying that when you are actually connected to a WiFi signal, the LTE indicator goes away, or even when you aren't connected to a WiFi point?

It's mainly a way for the phone to show you which network you are using for data.

Hi raichur0xx0rz,

Thanks for the reply. Here are two screenshots of my Settings screen showing the WIFI on and then WIFI off with the cell signal changing to show LTE.

I used to use a Nokia E62. You are a patient soul to have been using that up until last week!

Man I know how that goes was on an old blackberry 9630 myself for years until last week as well. Both the N5 and T-Mobile are way faster then that and sprint CDMA was. Loving it so far :)

Only problem I'm having is getting T-Mobile to port my number over. Its been 24 hours and nothing so far.

I am seeing really horrible LTE speed with my Nexus 5. With 3 bars and LTE I am getting around 5 Mbps down and anywhere from 1.5 - 4Mbps. This is downtown Denver.

I talked to T-Mobile and the rep said that my device is a 'non T-Mobile device' and that my speeds are 'normal.' That doesn't make any sense to me.

If anyone here is in the Denver area, please send me a PM... I keep getting the runarounds from T-Mobile and this is super frustrating. I just need to figure out what's going on and how to resolve this. Thank you!

I just use the regular phone dialer to make calls with Google Voice. There's a setting in the GV app that should let you choose how outgoing calls are handled.

Thanks for this! Easy GV# calling with the phone's dialer (uses minutes), easy outgoing SMS with GV app, incoming calls to GV# same as before (uses minutes), receive SMS and voicemail alerts at top of home screen. Transcripts and recorded voicemails in GV App.

All fixed. It was my own stupidy that caused it not to work. Accidently left a digit out of my account number. Doh! :P

Little worried though just had my first dropped call on T-Mobile :/

If you spend much time around wifi I would suggest using the Vonage app. Yes, only outbound calls are free, but if you make the majority of your calls using this then the 100 minutes allotted could be for receiving incoming.

Where is the Vonage app for free wifi calling?

I want to just make sure I am getting this right. I just ordered the micro sim (for free) kit from T-Mo. Once I get it, I pop in the sim and then go online and activate it, right? Do I need to buy a refill card or anything to get started or can I pay the $30 online when I activate? Thanks.

Yep, you got it. No need to buy a refill card, you can pay online.

This is all I could find Vonage app calling, unless you're already paying for Vonage service:
"...with other Vonage Mobile users"
"And, if you need to add calling credit at any time, it’s easy. Just buy in the app, directly from your GooglePlay account."

What Vonage app are you using to call mobiles/landlines for free over wifi?

That's the one. It works for me didn't pay or sign up for anything.

Wow. Sounds like too-good-to-be-true territory, but I'll give it a try. Will have to watch account minutes to believe it. Thanks.

Have you gotten feedback from others about the call quality?

Not specifically. But the others I've tried have gotten poor feedback so I've been taking the lack of negative as a positive.

Thanks for letting me know. That's exactly why I haven't tried the other apps like GrooveIP, etc.

Was just looking at the Vonage app terms, and it says something about using funds from your iTunes or Google Play acct to call phone numbers, so be careful you're not being charged without knowing.
