Nexus 5 owners with T-Mobile $30 Prepaid Plan Thread

Any recommendation as to where to find "good deals" on these prepaid T-Mobile cards? I'm new to the game and just been paying via their website. Great deal regardless but more savings is always good.

I've been getting mine at Target and paying with my Red card. That saves 5%.

So I think I came across a deal that could save us all some good money on our monthly plan. Can anyone confirm whether these prepaid refill cards work just like cash for paying the bill for this particular $30/month plan?

$50 Prepaid Refill Card

25% off on all accessories including the prepaid refill cards. I've just never used one and want to make sure they work like I assume they would. Thanks a ton to anyone who can help.

I just tried funding my prepaid account and there is an option to pay with the card on the website.

I have used these card to refill my account, but it does not appear that the code works with the refill cards. I added one to my account and it would not take 25% off when I entered the code.

Sorry to kinda bump an old-ish thread, but I have a few questions.

I have a Nexus 5 on the way, and a T-Mobile prepaid Micro SIM Card Activation Kit on the way.

Now, if I just got here: https://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/ActivateCodes.aspx - and activate the SIM, phone IMEI, than purchase the $30 Monthly4G plan here: T-Mobile $30 Wireless Airtime Card - Walmart.com - should/will it work? Or is there more to it than that?

You choose the plan when you activate the SIM on the Tmobile site. You can then choose to fund the account any way you like, including TMO cards from Walmart.

Is this plan available with the new T-Mobile $0 down on Nexus 5 deal? Where you pay it off over 24 months?

I went to a T-Mobile store on Thursday, qualified for that deal after a credit check and got a Nexus 5. When I told the guy I would like to maybe do the $30 one he said I had to do at least the 2.5GB/$60 a month plan, which I figured was a lie but I didn't knew what to do. He told me I could downgrade it to the $50 a month one after that. I got my phone activated and number ported from Sprint in the next hour or so and it's been working beautifully since.

However, I still want that $30 a month plan and on T-Mobile's website I was only able to save $10 by dropping it down to the 500mb/$50 plan. How do I go about getting this $30 plan? Should I call there or is there something I need to buy?

I saw a T-Mobile rep says this over on the official forums:

"Hey nzchicago,

The $30 plan with 100 minutes, unlimited messaging, and 5GB data is a special offer through Walmart. To move to this plan on an existing account, we'd need you to purchase a SIM starter kit from Walmart that includes the activation code for this plan. As soon as you've got the activation code, we'll be able to request the plan change!

You cannot get the $0 down financing on the prepaid plans. If you get the financing on a Simple Choice plan and then switch to prepaid, you will have to pay off the phone in full first.

Oh ok, thank you for the info. I wish I could do that right now and save some money since I never talk on the phone, but I'm about maxed out on all my credit cards now. :( Good to know for the future though.

Would this plan (with the Nexus 5) be worth it in my area? Zip 40361; It shows only 2G Edge coverage in my area with "excellent" 4G LTE just a town away, I go there often, but I don't live there.

Also, if I buy a Nexus 5 from the Google Play website, will it receive all T-mob coverage? (2G/3G HSPA+/4G LTE)

On the T-mob website it advertises it's N5 as "International" with the 2100 band, while on the Google Play website it doesn't feature the 2100 band in its specs, will this band make a difference in coverage, or is it just hiding in Google Play's specs?

Any information would be appreciated! :)

So I've almost reached the 5gb limit of 4G for the month (Been keeping up with live Olympic coverage on my phone lately). I'd like to continue to stream video for at least this coming week. Since I have a spare TMobile SIM card, can I just activate it with a new $30 prepaid plan? I realize it'll have a new phone number attached to it but I plan to just swap it in when needed. Will that work?

I'm pretty clueless about this stuff so hopefully someone can help me out. I currently have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (bought from google) on the TM $30 plan. Is there anyway to get LTE on this phone or would I need to buy a new S5 from google? And if I do get the new S5 can I just pop the sim card from the Samsung into the new phone and have LTE? Thanks in advance!!

I will attempt to answer, but am far from an expert. You did say any information would be appreciated. :-)

re: coverage. I would say T-mobile will likely not work well for you in your area. Are there any T-mobile stores in town? If not, then it's almost certainly not going to be good. (They would only have stores if they can display phones working well.) You may want to try checking your coverage on opensignal.com and rootmetrics.com also.

re: band. I don't think the 2100 band would make much difference. It doesn't look like T-mobile uses it much, or at all, according to the T-mobile wiki page. This article on the HTC One GPE on T-mobile may be helpful: HTC One GPE Coverage on T-mobile

Nexus 5 here. Just switched from Straight Talk because I was having an issue with their ST AT&T SIM card not syncing with Google. I thought $30 a month was too good to be true, and unfortunately, with T-Mobile, it sort of is. I get LTE at home, and I get coverage at my work too, but the rumors of T-Mobile being weak inside of buildings is true. Inside my workplace, I don't get any service. :( Luckily, we have WiFi that I can use...and I suppose I could enable roaming so I could still get phone calls through AT&T towers.

I just wish AT&T had a similar plan to this one, as AT&T has better coverage. I'll stick it out for a month though. Saving $20 a month (over Straight Talk) might sitll be worth less than stellar coverage in some areas...especially if you ever need customer service (which Straight Talk sucks with, and they aren't 24/7).

I bought my Nexus 5 (finally!) and tried to get the 30 dollar plan from Walmart/T-Mobile. I went to three different local Walmarts. Two of them had the SIM Starter Kits in stock, but they wouldn't activate. They even tried to get the manager to override, to no avail. The last Walmart said "someone" came around and took all the starter kits out of inventory. I then got the bright idea of buying a Walmart Family Mobile sim and activating it on an online 30 dollar starter purchase from walmart.com. That still didn't work.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think the plan has been discontinued for new subscribers. I broke down and got the $70 Unlimited prepaid from Tmobile. If anyone has been able to purchase the 30 dollar kit after March 1, please let me know, and I'll be on that like nobody's business!
