Nexus 6P - Best Settings for Better Battery Life?

I keep WiFi/Bluetooth/location on all the time. Today was probably the worse with 4 hours SOT since I was moving files around and running some background process to organize my files. And I was streaming Bluetooth with Entune on my drive for 2 hours. I also can barely hold a signal where I am. Yesterday I got close to 6 hours with normal usage.

Nexus 6P

I honestly haven't had to turn anything off... Adaptive brightness is on, ambient display is on, location is on, Bluetooth streaming for an hour 2-3 times a day. I have Facebook, 3 email accounts that sync and other misc stuff. I take the phone off the charger at 7am and plug it in around 11pm with ~30% left, usually get just shy of 5 hours SOT.

how much mAh are you using per hour of screen on time? I'm averaging roughly 120mAh per hour with my current settings. curious what yours is at

210 😎 haha that's crazy high compared to yours.

It easily lasts me all day with no changes to optimize battery. So I'm super happy. Even my Note 5 dill well but I felt angst every time I'd see the battery drop percentages so quick.

Yea, i'm not getting anywhere near that. My phone drained nearly 30 percent over sleeping last night over a 6 hour period.

good tips, but kind of disappointing comments if u think about it

so far, this phone has the best battery life of any phone I've had.... when I don't use it or put anything on it. My OPO, N5, and S4 all did way better as far as on screen time, apps running, etc. battery life than this phone. Disappointed to say the least, and soon enough all phones are going to get Doze so it's not like that is going to be that significant later. The new 820 chip sounds promising though, will have to keep an eye out for that..

I don't understand how some people are saying their 6p gets 6 hours of screen on time? Like some others on this thread, I can't believe how fast the battery drops when the phones in use. I struggle to get 3.5 to 4 hours SOT and that's with hardly any apps and no games installed ( bluetooth,GPS,etc off) My note 4 with a bunch of apps, games, and pics I can get 5 or 6 hrs SOT easy. Really kinda regretting my purchase as well. Can't wait for the snapdragon 820, or exynos "mongoose" in the note 6.

I'm not regretting my purchase though - still the best phone I've used by far from an overall experience. I think the S6 is a better phone - WITHOUT doze, it does as well with off screen battery life, and the battery life while using the phone is very, very good. However, as an Android purist this phone is the only way to go.

That said, I'm struggling to reconcile the differences in reported battery life among 6P owners, which seem quite varied.

I would say I'm a averaging 4hrs SOT over 14hrs. Some days I get 5+ hrs SOT. I'm at 44% right now with 3.5hrs SOT. I streamed about 3hrs of GPM today also. Strong signal strength helps quite a bit (green bar vs yellow/orange). My best day was 6hrs SOT with 18hrs standby and I had 50% left. Don't know how that happened. Haven't repeated it.

i'm noticing under the battery section of settings that my cell reception with this phone is always yellow, and never green as it was in the past. that could be draining my battery more. can you guys check if you have this issue?

Yes, my battery does much better when the signal is green. That's based on rotating between VZW, T-Mo, & Fi.

same. if i barely use my phone (doze on.) I can probably have 3.5-4hrs SOT. But say I watch a youtube video, or text my group for 3-5mins straight, I lose about 1% every minute!

anyone getting this? 1% every minute with the screen on?

dark wallpaper and backgrounds when possible, display off after 30 seconds, minimize apps known for drain (Facebook), and ambient display and lightflow help prevent me from having to turn on my screen as much as I would otherwise. and I keep my brightness around 10% more cause my eyes are sensitive than anything else, but unless I'm outdoors or in a well lit room I keep it almost always under 20-30%

I get about 4 hours SOT and when I leave work after moderate use its at 40% ... plenty of juice to get me through my workout, and I charge it in the car.

before this came out I was obsessed with battery life, but it's really not even on my mind at all during the day which is all I wanted. we need the S7 and the other 2016 phones to use USB-C so we have more/less expensive charging options

I'm very pleased with my battery performance. I get about 14hrs of up time with 4-5hrs SOT. I've found cell reception makes the biggest impact on my battery performance, but you can't really control that. I don't do much to affect battery life. Just a couple of things:

-Manually control screen brightness (no adaptive/auto brightness)
-Toggle off WiFi and Bluetooth when not in use (the toggles are buggy; sometimes I have to toggle twice or three time to stop battery use)

My screen timeout is set to two minutes. Background sync is on. And I use Skype . . . haven't seen any battery issues there.

obviously not an issue for you, but if you cut your screen timeout in half, it would make a noticeable difference. for me 30 seconds is more than enough, but that's why we have choices.

signal, managing brightness and timeout are 3 of the bigger reasons there's so much difference in battery performance from person to person.

I'm like you though, haven't had to sacrifice anything I like to get good battery. I remember when the S6 launched and the people getting decent battery were disabling half the phones features ... kinda defeats the purpose! fortunately for us that isn't the case.

No Facebook or messenger(use web version) and that should save you a ton of battery

i've deleted by FB and Messenger app. using the Chome FB and Messenger now. i hope these tips work now! are you sure FB and messenger uses that much power though? the android power meter never shows any power usage from this, although the app itself doesn't seem very accurate. things don't add up to 100%, whats up with that??

Here you go. Thank me Later ;)

thanks for this, i'm going to try a bunch of these tips. i really hope they work!

edit: this is how to turn off the wifi/bluetooth scanning mentioned in the video for Marshmallow: Setting > Locations > "..." > http://imgur.com/a/l2imt

Hi there, I recieved my nexus 6p 3 days ago and I am appalled with its battery life. It's pretty much on par with my old gs4. I'm not sure what else to try, the doze feature in marshmallow never activates on my handset even in safe mode.

Today I used my handset for probably at the most 1 hour of SOT including 30 minutes of YouTube resulting in the phone lasting 8am-3pm with I'd say extremely light use.

Can anyone help?

I have found way to put my Nexus 6P into a battery-saving mode that is just awesome! I am not sure how many other users have tried using this mode.

It's fairly easy to access from a pop-up menu you can get into from the hardware buttons:

1) In portrait mode, press and hold the top button on the right side of the phone.

2) Release the button when the menu pops up.

3) In the pop-up menu, tap the circle shaped icon on the left side.

Your phone will now enter a battery-saving mode unrivaled by anything else you've ever seen!

[/sarcasm]

Seriously, enjoy your phone and charge it when it needs it.

There are posts from users having problems with Doze not activating. I think they're on the battery thread.

That aside, can you post some battery stats (i.e. Screen shots from the battery usage menu)?

I wonder what causes some to have better battery life than others? My first full charge gave me 6 hours SOT, and the second gave me 3 minutes shy of 7 hours. I'm now on my third charge. I guess it depends on the apps you install, usage patterns and set up of individual devices.
