Nexus 6P Microphone Problem

I just tried a series of tests. I called my daughter and I told her that I was going to do some tests for call quality. First I was talking to her for about 10 minutes so she could really tell what the phone sounded like. I wasn't covering the back of it in any way. I even took my case off while I was doing this. Then I set the phone down on a pillow and continued to talk to her. I did not turn on speakerphone. I did not tell her what I was going to do. I asked her at that point if she could tell any difference in how I sounded. She said no. Then I put my hand over the back of the phone while it was up to my ear. I covered the entire back of the phone with my hand. She could not tell a difference. I then put the phone on my shoulder like the original poster was describing and she could not tell a difference. Then I took it one step further and I put a piece of packing tape over the hole for the noise cancelling mic and asked her if she could tell a difference. She said no. I did all this while I was in my house with the music on loud enough for her to hear it through her earpiece while we were talking. I know these tests aren't scientific, but they do cover a few different scenarios. We talked for a total of about 30 minutes during this whole thing. So there you go, my experience with this was it made no difference if the noise cancelling mic was covered or not.

first of all walking into an office where 99% of the people are shouldering their phone sounds weird!

I digress .... been covering it up all day and not one person noticed, all said I sounded normal.

Why is it weird you have never seen anyone squeeze the phone between there ear and shoulder? And I explained that at intervals sometimes that position is used once both hands are busy

nothing weird about that position, I'm just imagining an office where 99% of the employees are holding their phones that way ... you would think at some point either Bluetooth or speaker phones would be used .... Trying to type while shouldering your phone isn't the most comfortable position in the world.

I'm still surprised at Canada's return policy, are you gonna sell it or did u figure something else out? Like I said, and someone else posted, it worked fine when we covered it, so it's def your phone.

And what if they shipped you a phone that had a cracked display, you're not able to return it? I'd be raising hell if I were you, and if speaker/Bluetooth isn't an option, and holding it that way is a must, what are you gonna do?

I raised hell to swap it to be honest I told them what if the device you swap it for has a camera issue. They told me you send it out for repair with manufacturer.

After massive complaint they accepted to swap it for another Nexus 6p and to be honest with you this one has been very good thus far. I think the issue is coming for a batch of devices and not a bad design. Will know more tomorrow when I make more phone calls

hope it works out for you ... I agree with the batch but who knows.

did you get Nexus protect? Or do u have any other insurance? If it comes down to it you can always go that route right?

I got the best buy warranty with it, It's pretty solid. If everything works well with this device I would be extremely happy. Last thing I want is to go back to touchwiz lol

lol, I'm no Samsung hater, I had the S4 almost 3 years, but going from marshmallow to touchwiz/LP would be brutal ... Hope it works out for you

I definitely have a problem with the microphone when I cover the noise cancelling microphone on the back of the phone. The other day my wife was complaining that she couldn't hear me at times, we both chalked it up to the fact that she was driving. Then after reading about people having problems with covering the noise cancelling microphone me and my wife tested it tonight and sure enough when I cover the noise cancelling microphone with my hand or shoulder she can't hardly hear me at all.

This is a design flaw in my opinion which will probably annoy me from time to time but it's definitely not a reason for me to get rid of my 6P.

PS, I have to say that the noise cancelling on the Nexus 6P does work very very well though. I was talking the other day to somebody when I was out on the shop floor where I work which is very loud out there and the person I was talking to couldn't even tell I was in the noisy environment. The noise cancelling on the 6p definitely works much better than any my galaxy phones I had. So maybe the placement of this microphone helps this for some reason.

You have never seen people hold there phone between there head and a shoulder when both hands are busy? Maybe every single person that works in construction does that. All these people cannot be all dumb. I work on my laptop all day sometimes in intervals while speaking on the phone need to rest the phone between my head and my shoulder to use my 2 hands quick. Dumb is jumping in the pool expecting your phone to be waterproof when it is not.

It's actually an extremely common position for phone calls. I work in a field where it's very phone call based and 99 % of the people around as I type this have their phone stuck between there head and there shoulder while they type. They still take it off there shoulder when done typing (Galaxy S6, blackberry bold, blackberry Q5, IPhone 6, Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge, Iphone 6S+, Galaxy S4, IPhone 5 these are devices all being used the way I am explaining by different people around me as I type this reply and none have an issue)

Other phones don't have that issue so there is no reason to forgive this phone.

I'm not saying that people are dumb for resting phones on their shoulder, but you're creating an argument out of nothing! You totally obfuscated my suggestion to use a Bluetooth headset. Why? If it happens to be that a certain device doesn't fit your lifestyle then buy something else, but don't try to create a defect scenario for something that works well for 90%of its users. To me, the situation that you're describing absolutely should be using a Bluetooth headset. I'm a shoulder holder as well, but I figured out about ten years ago that a Bluetooth headset was way more comfortable than my shoulder. Currently, I abhor holding the phone to my face. So, do I think it's kinda dumb to complain about something that isn't a defect and has alternative solutions... Yes!

Does my opinion really matter in the whole scheme of things? No!

Tested it on mine and call quality was excellent whether I covered the nc mic or not, and however I held the phone. So yeah I don't think it has anything to do with covering the mic.

Yes, it does have to with covering the mic and, more importantly, with your shoulder. If you just cap your finger over the NC mic you may not recreate the problem. But, I'm thinking the combination of the friction between your head and shoulder is enough to make the NC mic go into overdrive. I bet a software update can resolve this issue.

A blue tooth headset is not a solution for the field of work I am in. Also another device is not an option right now in Canada. I used it for over 30 minutes talk time so no device swap tried to swap it for a Note and they refused.

Can you please explain how holding your phone in that awkward shoulder position is allowed in your field of work, but a high quality Bluetooth headset is not, especially if you have the type of job that requires regular phone use? In my office, we're not allowed to use Bluetooth headsets, but we're also not allowed to use our personal cell phones while on work hours.

Everyone just needs to chill. Just because you think one way is an instant solution does not mean it will work for all.

Example: Do most of you use 100-150 GB in a month of mobile data? Doubtful.. but I do. Most would scream "Why not use WiFi!?" .. Simple answer is I can't. The wifi available during intense situations simply won't cut what I am doing.

So everyone just relax. You're welcomed to help but to say your solution is 100% a fit for the OP is kind of pointless since every single one of us uses a phone a different way. Helping would be better .. making fun or simply saying "Why does my solution not fit you!?" doesn't help.

Where are the noise cancelling microphones?

With all this talk about poor mic quality and covering the noise cancelling microphones to improve it... where are the noise cancelling microphones located??

See, now I want to know what are the "intense situations" that would cause you to burn that much mobile data? And, how is it that you have not been throttled?

I have an unlimited plan on T-Mobile. The intense situations are downloads and things like 1080 P video. My wifi at work can barley handle music streaming let alone anything video related / downloading. At home though I do use my wifi since I have Comcast and it is a nice solid connection.

So I was on a call and found something interesting: when I completely covered the nc mic and held my finger steady the person on the other end could hear me just fine. But if I moved my finger back and forth on the mic they suddenly complained they couldn't hear me. Did it four times with the same results. Seems like the noise from the friction did indeed screw something up. Hopefully this can be fixed with an update. I mean for me it's something I had to try to do to get this bug, but I do shoulder my phone from time to time and it's worrying.

I did a simple test. Called my home phone from my cell.

There wasn't a noticeable difference whether a covered up the back mic or not (in a quiet room).

BUT..... I did notice that the front mic is quite sensitive with respect to placement. Moving the phone so the mic was above or below my mouth causes a big drop off in audio quality/strength.

Re: Where are the noise cancelling microphones?

Back of the phone, about 1 inch above the fingerprint scanner. Small (very) oblong hole.

I thought that was the laser focus. So is the laser focus next to the camera?
