I just tried a series of tests. I called my daughter and I told her that I was going to do some tests for call quality. First I was talking to her for about 10 minutes so she could really tell what the phone sounded like. I wasn't covering the back of it in any way. I even took my case off while I was doing this. Then I set the phone down on a pillow and continued to talk to her. I did not turn on speakerphone. I did not tell her what I was going to do. I asked her at that point if she could tell any difference in how I sounded. She said no. Then I put my hand over the back of the phone while it was up to my ear. I covered the entire back of the phone with my hand. She could not tell a difference. I then put the phone on my shoulder like the original poster was describing and she could not tell a difference. Then I took it one step further and I put a piece of packing tape over the hole for the noise cancelling mic and asked her if she could tell a difference. She said no. I did all this while I was in my house with the music on loud enough for her to hear it through her earpiece while we were talking. I know these tests aren't scientific, but they do cover a few different scenarios. We talked for a total of about 30 minutes during this whole thing. So there you go, my experience with this was it made no difference if the noise cancelling mic was covered or not.

first of all walking into an office where 99% of the people are shouldering their phone sounds weird!
I digress .... been covering it up all day and not one person noticed, all said I sounded normal.
