Nexus 6P Microphone Problem

Re: Where are the noise cancelling microphones?

According to this review it does not cover the laser focus.

If yours is the same, you should be fine.

Re: Where are the noise cancelling microphones?

Thanks. The link in that post shows where the laser focus is. Good info.

Re: Where are the noise cancelling microphones?

I might start a new thread on this because it's a different question but along the same lines. I got this case and it was a great deal because it fits well and is decent quality. But... does it cover the laser auto focus? Is it to the right inside that raised "bar"?

Thanks for your help!

It looks fine. The laser focus is alongside the flash, maybe 1/8" away; that's why the oblong cutout is as big as it is.

You can turn your camera on, flip the phone around to have it facing you, and see if you can see the little red laser for auto focus going.

If I move my phone even slightly away from my mouth while on a phone call the other person can't hear a word I'm saying. I've returned one unit because of that and now it's the same with the second unit. Anyone else? Any fixes?

+1, very frustrating. I'm not using a case or anything and ppl keep complaining that they can't hear me. If I move the phone just a little bit they say they can't hear nothing. I hope this is software related otherwise bye bye 6P

Exactly whats happening with me. When blocking the secondary microphone on the back, people say they can't hear me at all. No tucking my phone on my shoulder to free up my hands!

Regularly using the phone with my index finger holding it against my head on the fingerprint scanner, some of the best call quality on any phone I've used. Speakerphone quality is really good, as well!

Agree... The earpiece sound quality is about the best I've used...and I've used almost all.
Ppl could hear me fine even when putting my hand over the back noise canceling mic...but I didn't go crazy testing.
I'm pretty sure a software update takes care of it.

So I was on a call and found something interesting: when I completely covered the nc mic and held my finger steady the person on the other end could hear me just fine. But if I moved my finger back and forth on the mic they suddenly complained they couldn't hear me. Did it four times with the same results. Seems like the noise from the friction did indeed screw something up. Hopefully this can be fixed with an update. I mean for me it's something I had to try to do to get this bug, but I do shoulder my phone from time to time and it's worrying.

I think you may have just nailed the root of the problem, and your explanation would solve the riddle of why some people are saying they had no issues when they tested covering theirs but some people did. Shouldering the phone and moving around would most certainly replicate the friction testing you did.
basically I think Google didn't foresee that back mic being rubbed against anything when they designed it even if it appears they did foresee it being covered but not moving. I can't see how this could possibly be resolved through a software update though, since it looks like this would only be caused by how the mic itself is designed so I guess people who do use a phone in a position where the NC mic would be covered AND moving will have to adjust their use accordingly if they want this phone.

I ended up swapping the device. I could not handle the voice calling on the phone anymore. Tried everything but it just did not work for me and was a deal-breaker for my personal use.

+1000, people can do some of the dumbest things. If you want a phone that you can rest on your shoulder then this phone won't work for you; however, if you want to keep the phone then get a Bluetooth device! Problem solved!

If there is one thing that has never changed on this forum, it's the people who don't have a problem, so they insist that the people who ARE having are problem are liars, in the pay of (Apple, Motorola, Microsoft, whoever they hate at the moment) or are just plain idiots. They just can't simply have a bad phone because obviously THEIRS is OK, so yours must be too!

For the record, Google knows this is a problem. Also for the record, my phone works fine, But I believe those who are saying theirs doesn't.

I think there's a chance Google can fix this issue with a software update by calibrating the rear mic for this type of use.

I've just made sure not to touch the rear mic till then. Other than this issue I think the call quality on this phone is the best I've ever had and the noise cancellation is excellent.

I agree that the noise cancellation is excellent on this phone. I work outside and in loud environments quite often when I make and receive calls. The person on the line rarely has any issues hearing me over all of the racket going on around me.

I'm not trying to downplay this issue whatsoever cuz it's happening to me too... When I talk to my wife, out of habit I tend to pinch my phone to my shoulder which then she irritates her because she can't hear me which then pisses me off because of her ****ty attitude. But other than this issue I think the call quality is really really excellent on this phone... I understand this issue is a deal breaker for some people but for me I'll gladly take this excellent call quality and learn to not **** with the rear microphone till this issue is fixed. I just don't want other people looking at the 6P and reading this thread thinking that the call quality sucks on this phone because it doesn't, unless you mess with the rear microphone.

At least this is my experience with using the 6P on Verizon... there are so many different factors that the experiences can vary between person to person.

I have to agree the call quality is superb. This is the best sounding phone I've ever owned on calls for both me and the people on the other end. I was on the phone while standing on the corner of a busy intersection today and it was loud, so I asked the other person and they couldn't hear anything at all other than me. I'll take that any day.
