Nexus 6P: Reviews and Unboxings Thread

I am starting to see why Google is only selling this phone online.

While there are reasons to buy a Galaxy Note 5 - Camera and S-Pen Functionality, SGS6 - Camera, LG G4 - SD Card, removable battery, IR blaster, Moto X Pure - SD Card, customizable fronts/backs, Motorola Voice/Moto Display, Sony Xperia Z5 - waterproofing, SD card, even the BlackBerry Priv - hardware keyboard, SD card, Asus Zenfone - price, storage/SD card support, etc. It still seems that the 2015 Nexus phones are the Android phones that provide the best experience right now.

If these phones were on carriers in the US - they would be the phones to buy for most and that would probably tick off many OEM's. The Nexus 4 and 5 has several compromises (camera and battery life) and the Nexus 6 was just really big. These two Nexus phones fit the bill for most that want a normal size phone or phablet with a great camera, solid performance, and probably around 3 years of support/security updates based on how Google has supported past Nexus devices. Do you trust any other OEM to provide that?

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

The verge gets a bad reputation for being iVerge because there are a few editors who work there who are *very* pro apple and anti everything else. I was listening to the vergecast from the week the surface book was announced and the one guy, Casey Newton I think, outright dismissed it because it isn't made by apple. People like that give the verge a bad name.
I've had to stop listening to the Vergecast, especially when Nilay isn't around, lest my head explode. The, I'm assuming living in the Apple bubble too long, Redmond bashing from some of the participants is just beyond the pale. There was some comment about Windows Phone several months ago from one of the female staff that clinched it for me.

I listen to the vergecast not for tech news anymore, but hilarity/entertaingment. They're so far off the rails of what the vergecast was supposed to be that they don't even know that there used to be rails. Though if Casey Newton is on I usually can't make it through.

if you're you're looking for what the vergecast is supposed to be, try ctrl-walt-delete. has Nilay and Walt Mossberg. I really didn't think I'd like it, but it's been surprisingly good.

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

Yes I always loved and respected Verge opinion. Never understand people naive bashing Verge believing they only like iPhone. It's simple the iPhone is one most well known and top smartphones out there. The Verge just used as benchmark for analysis and comparison because it's well know popular. Easy device for non tech person to understand difference between quality and functionality when Verge makes reviews. Now look the Verge talk about 6P and give it great praise. I don't think people can keep accuse Verge of being iPhone bias anymore imo.

Never understood the hate on Verge either. That narrative needs to end.

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

The biggest iPhone fan has moved on from The Verge to Wired. But for some weird reason even David Pierce has good things to say about the Nexus 6P.
Notes From a Weekend With Google's Nexus 6P | WIRED

Nilay Patel is an unabashed Apple fan. So is Casey Newton and even Dan Seifert is a bit biased (he was basing OP2 when they introduced the USB-C connector and now it is going fairly mainstream with the Nexus phones and MSFT Lumia devices).
Vlad Savov is fairly unbiased and so is Dieter Bohn.

I am most likely getting both Nexus phones. One for me and one for my brother.

It's all opinion, not bias. If it wasn't, we'd be only comparing spec sheets and benchmarks - which are mostly irrelevant.

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

Bottom line for me is, this is going to be a great phone, possibly the best Nexus phone to date. I know it won't please everyone because that's just the way it is. I've never been a big camera person when it comes to phones, but I can see the benefits of having a nice camera. The Nexus 6P & 5X from what I've seen in the reviews will have a good enough camera for me.

These reviews and unboxings are really making me anxious to get my hands on this phone.

I would have got this phone if it had an LCD screen, otherwise it seems like a great phone.

I used to like LCD'S over AMOLED in the past, but Samsung has done well improving the AMOLED screens that it doesn't matter anymore to me. The Note 4's screen was really good and the Note 5 is even better. Looking at the videos the 6 P's screen looks on par with the Note 5, but I won't know for sure until I get it in my hand.

The thing that's different for me is, if the Nexus is missing something that I would have liked it to have (wireless charging comes to mind) that won't deter me from getting the phone. It seems like most people on this forum, it's always one thing, and if it doesn't have it, they don't want the phone. That's cool, it's your money and you should get what you want. It's pretty much like that every year when the new Nexus phone launches, or in this case phones.

It's about the overall experience for me. I like stock Android but it goes deeper than that. Every since the Nexus One, these phones have always represented the underdog or the other side, compared to the Iphone. It's never lived up to the competition in the mainstream, and has mostly been a tech/geek/niche phone.

This time I really think Google has married a great software & hardware experience that is on par with the Iphone completely. These reviews are really telling, it's almost like some of them have to try to find something slightly negative so it won't look like their not being objective.

I've always loved the dark blacks of AMOLED displays. I remember back in the day being pretty amazed when I got my Samsung Epic 4g. The screen wasn't perfect and didn't always scream "quality" but I was impressed none the less. I remember replacing it with my Evo4g LTE (which everyone said had a "fantastic" LCD screen, and while it was crystal clear with great viewing angles, I was just so sad to see that all the whites had a warm yellow tone and the colors didn't pop. Since then I've only had LCD's, and while they are always sharp and good looking, they never make me say "wow" (though will say the iphone does have a pretty spectacular one). With the improvements AMOLED has had over the years, I'm personally really REALLY excited to get the 6P and see if this phone wows me.

Re: The Verge Review on the 6P is out, I'm shocked!!!

Hoping to see a DisplayMate review before pulling the trigger, but I don't know how long those usually take or if they'll even do one.

I'm sure it will look great and it does look better than the Nexus 5X from what I have seen in the videos. My issue is I do not know what the brightness level was set to on each device and wether or not adaptive brightness was set.

I ended up going with the Moto X Pure Edition. I have wanted a larger screen (coming from the 2013 Nexus 5) and wanted a Moto X from the beginning just didn't want AMOLED and the smaller screen. It would have been nice if they added the fingerprint sensor on the device but I can live without that.

The Moto X also has a vibrant mode that seems to make the images "pop" as you said. I have also had issues with AMOLED in the past with burn in (though it seems it is not as bad anymore)

Yeah the reviews are really making me question how "real" they are. There are some that are from people that have been more on the iPhone side but are now leaning the other way. I admit people change and the Nexus 6P is a great device, it just doesn't seem like the device for me. I went with the Moto X Pure Edition which should be here soon. I figure I have 14 days to try it out and see if I like it.

Had one and returned it. It's a good phone but the lackluster battery life along with no amoled made me return it. The screen is great but compared to amoled seems washed out and coming from a note 3 it irked me. The whites though are the whitest I've ever seen on a phone! The blacks aren't bad either but you can tell it's not amoled. Combine that with the nexus 6p's specs and the fact that it is a nexus, I couldn't resist! Lol.

I'm not a heavy user and I sit at a desk all day so battery usually isn't an issue for me. I usually have an external battery pack too.

I'm used to LCD now and I will admit sometimes I see someone with a Samsung with an AMOLED and notice how vibrant the colors are. I figure I can try the vibrant mode and see how I like it. If I don't like it I can always return it and get something else. What I really wanted was the 2013 Nexus 5 with a larger screen and better internals made by LG.

I really felt the same way you did about AMOLED screens. I still kind of do but not as bad as I did. My first AMOLED screened phone was a galaxy nexus and I too had some burn in issues. They weren't as extreme as some, but to me they were noticeable.

But in the last two weeks I've seen a good number of different AMOLED phones that my friends have (notes, S6s, and S6 Edges mostly) and they all look wonderful with no sign of burn in. That's not to say it isnt possible, because given the right conditions it is, but I feel like its not going to be a big problem.

And if it is, I have nexus protect :)

Good luck with the MXPE, it looked like a solid phone!

And another rediculously positive review about the 6p.

Although we were a bit skeptical at first, after receiving the Nexus 6P last week and playing around with it non-stop since then we can conclude, without a shadow of a doubt: the Nexus 6P isn’t just the best Nexus device, it’s arguably the best Android device to come along in years. If you’re a new owner, we probably don’t need to tell you that.

The more I read the more I'm really getting antsy about getting this phone in my hands.

LOL! The more I read the more I question why everyone thinks it is so great. Don't get me wrong I prefer Android and always have. Maybe it is that great of a phone.

I honestly kind of wonder that too. I mean I know I'm going mad over it because it's pure Android and its the first flagship worthy nexus they have made (IMHO). The reviewers may feel the same now that Android is so much more mature? That's about all I can think. But I won't complain!
