NFC payment only works if I open my bank app (and not whilst locked)

I've had a P30 Pro since launch (March 2019) and when I first had it, I remember being able to make NFC payments without unlocking the phone, as I could with my previous Galaxy S8+.

Some time between then and now, when I try to pay for something in a shop with my phone, nothing happens (the machine doesn't even detect the phone).

However, if I unlock the phone, open my banking app (Barclays Bank), log into the app and try again, the payment is instant.

Any ideas?

Add your card to Google pay and use that. Far easier and works every time.

Barclays Bank doesn't work with Google Pay.
