I recently purchased an 8TB WD Portable HD from Best Buy (Cyber Monday special, 33% discount), formatted as exFAT. My Note 10 Plus can access the 8TB HD, read the files, open files, transfer files to and from my computer/HD.

exFAT is limited to 16EiB (Exbibyte [binary Exibyte]), making 8TB about 0.05% of that. So it's not surprising. We don't have storage yet that can't be handled by exFAT. (SD card port layout is limited to 2TB - supposedly - but SATA doesn't work the way the SD card interface does.)

So, what does the 16EiB mean ? And also what does the 0.05% mean … ?

What exactly would the limitations mean for me, just a casual computer user … ?
