Note 3: KitKat update disabling use of external micro SD Card

Having to root your phone to fix it is not a solution. People shouldn't have to do that and most people could never figure it out anyways.

Here! Here! We are end users here who paid for a phone device to work.

This is just my opinion on stock / novice users being recommended to root as a 'simple' way to fix an issue. Please don't do that.
(KitKat has mostly worked fine for me, save a for a lesser continuing wifi issue) .

Tripping knox does void your warranty except for the Tmobile galaxy note 3s . As long as your device is functional and is reset to the official stock firmware Tmobile will take your device for replacement if it has a hardware/ software deficiency. And to be honest, why would you need knox on your note 3 anyway... unless you are some big firm CEO and you use your phone entirety for business. So if you are not planning on keeping your note 3 virginity, it is time for your note 3 to be deflowered by you or somebody with experience if you are not man enough to do it yourself :p hahaha the whole breaking your device's hymen (knox) process takes less than 10 mins (hymens were meant to be broken right?) and you dont even have to initiate any sort of foreplay for this :p. So go trip your knox, start flashing roms and unfold all the blessings and joy that a deflowered note 3 brings, and get your money's worth...but if you cant trip it you might just want to go get yourself a flip phone instead at least you will have less to worry about then

Your analogy leaves a lot to be desired.

You had some good points previously, but your analogy needs changing.
You're in trouble now bud!

I agree to a degree. But how can progress for security be implemented without some sort of recourse? It's Googles progress moving forward and I'm sure they announced this to ALL developers before implementing this "feature" in 4.4.2. If they didn't update their app, it's not Google's fault, it's the developers.

BTW, you don't have to upgrade. Let it download and don't install. The only real drawback is that you can't get any new updates until you do. So their NOT forcing you....merely giving you a nudge.

That's not true in VZW. It installs itself after a while even if you keep refusing it. You can clear cache then it downloads again and you can't stop it unless you root. I think this change is more of an effort to force users to buy space to store data online instead of the SD card. I don't believe security has anything to do with it.

Note 3 International version doesn't seem to have been tampered with. Can still take photos and save them on SD

It downloaded itself without me asking it to, and then a screen telling me it was "going" to install kept popping up, with greater frequency as time went on. It got a point that I just rooted it, and tripped the Knox flag, just to get rid of it.

I'm all for improvements and change, but reading around, it seems this isn't the first time that Android does its best to force an update. I may well have rooted sooner had I known that the operating system was like this.

Wow. I did not know that it keeps popping up with greater frequency. I know it would nag from time to time though.

You might be right. I'm with Sprint and don't know how VZW does things except rape your bank account. :) I don't think Google is being as sinister as most believe. I agree that they don't want SD cards, but I don't think they would screw customers over to make a point. But then again......

Well the whole idea of rooting your android device is to give you the upper hand and let you be in control of your own device...you have complete and total ownership of your device because you paid for it...I just find it ridiculous that google or samsung would try and impose stuff on my device and limit my use of it, this is not right...if I upgraded to kitkat and I didnt like kitkat then I have every right to go back to jelly bean or install a custom rom or whole aosp entirely that's what ownership means. Now if Google or Samsung want to take Apple's route and restrict customers usage of their own devices then I will have to give up on smart phones entirely and dig out my old flip phone from the closet

To all of you knox-phobic people out there it is time to overcome your knox fear and free your android devices from bondage...since the only way to salvation is through rooting hahaha well eventually it aint meant for the faint of hearts anyway

Happy rooting ladies and gentlemen :)

Just so you know, I was able to root my SM-N900V without tripping Knox. It was pretty easy actually. And now, I can decide for myself if and when to go Kit Kat.

Yes ....
it wiped me out. worked for hours wondering why I couldn't back up my data as usual to my MicroSD card. So what do I do? Do I see if it will restore to previous version?

Can someone help me get my external micro SD card to work again? After AT&T updated my Galaxy Note 3 to the latest Android operating system (may I say, during the night WITHOUT my permission), suddenly I can not use my external micro SD card.

That "nextapp sdfix" sounded really nice. I thought, YAY; no problem. but then after I downloaded it (the easy part), I found my phone had to be "jail broke" or "rooted" as the Android folks call it. So, the "fix" is no fix at all. I don't know how to root. I've tried, but it's a vicious circle.

Since the recent KitKat update on Samsung phones the sd card has become almost useless and upsetting a lot of people including myself. There is hope however, Samsung says its a bug in their software and their working on it as fast as possible. It is apparently not some sinister act by Google as some say to block the usage of our micro sd cards.:)

i was able to solve it

at&t sent me a replacement that was on 4.3jb

i took it a step further and rooted it with kingo, now running firenote v6x and loving it. just like stock JB but a few tweaks and much faster. saw 5hrs screen time on a single charge today and should be getting much better in a few days.

Google..they've certainly evolved into something very different than we knew 10 years ago.

Personally I think they HAVE disabled old functionality of sd intentionally to force users away from use of external memory. This is evidenced by the absence of microSD on ALL Google /nexus devices. Of course it's intentional
. If google was all that concerned about security, don't you think the coders and strategists could find a more sophisticated and subtle approach? This is a sledgehammer approach to a relatively small problem.

And of course they dialog with manufactueres and carriers... thus the forced updates. It does seem like rooting solves the issue but users should not be forced into something so drastic with an approach that voids warranty.

Another point in the argument that google is intentionally roadblocking the external memory is that manufacturers have been able to charge significant premiums for memory onboard devices. You pay a LOT more to upgrade a device from 16 gb onboard to 32 gb. Manufactuers would much rather you pay $150 for 16 gigs than get a 64 gig card on amazon for $55. Ridiculous.

You guys on Notes are going to have to take the kk hit if you want your GPS issue fixed too
. Very, very disappointed in google.

If that was the case, why weren't app developers sent a heads up? I have published apps in the market and nobody sent me a heads up.

And perhaps I don't understand the changes well enough but I don't think an update will be enough. If apps can only write to *their folders* on SD card then how can my FTP app download and save to the same location that my text editor needs to edit and save to? Both apps need to be able to write to the same location.

Or my music and audio directories. Sometimes my podcasting app downloads and saves to the same folder that I want to copy to from my PC via USB, or to save to with another app. If every app can only write to their own silo....well its kinda silly.

It's more than silly. Of course there are going to be situations where two apps would use the same folders. And this approach is overly simplistic for an organization as powerful and sophisticated as Google. Of course there's a way to make the default read-only and have an alert pop up that says "you are about to allow this app to control a stock folder or one that another app has created. Are you sure you want to do this?"
Bam, google is off the hook.
Personally, from what I've heard, the only security issues are when users get apps from non-googleplay locations. this whole thing is a smokescreen for google pushing us to the cloud. Since they have not been able to penetrate the market more with their own nexus devices, and have not persuaded HTC and Samsung to delete the microSD drive, they are taking a more indirect strategy to kill it.

Keep in mind their real stock in trade is OUR DATA. If it's on the microSD, they can't easily see and analyze it. If it's on the cloud, they can.

As a dev, I'd be furious! Imagine all the devs out there desperately trying to figure out how to deal with this and not having a heads-up from the G! Something like ES Explorer is more-or-less useless on KitKat, so what are they supposed to do about that?
The whole thing makes me nuts. Google has just become another Microsoft and Facebook intent on dominating everything.
