Note 3: KitKat update disabling use of external micro SD Card

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about it until someone discovers an exploit.

And even then, not sure that I'll even bother with Kit Kat.

For KK, that could be true. But we on Verizon don't even have KK yet. I was obviously referring to JB and rooting in general and discussing the concept of rooting with someone who doesn't even have Note. Had nothing to do with Kit Kit specifically.

Those with Kit Kat will probably just have to wait a little longer before they root. I would never root with a new iteration anyway.

But apparently, there are people in the planet who have rooted Kit Kit without tripping Knox. Who knew?

I rooted my Note 3 on KitKat without tripping Knox, also got voice recording working - xda-developers

Well, this discussion was about rooting KitKat without tripping Knox and now you say you're not even on KitKat. The XDA link you posted is for the N900W8 that was successfully rooted, but it is a GSM phone with a different chipset. Case closed!

My initial discussion about rooting wasn't about Kit Kat. It was about rooting in general. It was a philosophical discussion about rooting. And it was with someone who doesn't even have this device.

I just posted the XDA link because of the only person on the planet crack.

Sorry if that swerve was a distraction. I didn't notice that you had brought the conversation back to Kit Kat rooting.

BTW, it seems that those on T-Mobile (also GSM of course) can root Kit Kat without tripping Knox. Since this is a global thread about the Note 3, seems like a good thing to point that out. Also, I'm guessing that it won't be long that Verizon models get exploits. Of course, they actually have to get around to releasing it first . :g:

So, more of the planet is able to do it at this point.

teleburst, your link to the XDA thread is for rooting 4.4 only if you are currently running rooted 4.3 before you update with their special procedure. I could have saved myself half an hour of reading and yet another website registration if I had know that because I'm already running 4.4 and it is too late for me to take advantage of that method.

Thought it was worth a mention because there are some of us already rooted in JB. Sorry it took you a half an hour to find that out but registering for XDA can come in handy.

Point is, all of the dismay over rooting triggering Knox isn't absolute. There are already exceptions to the rule and, guess what, it's still early to think that it won't be possible, especially since Verizon hasn't even unleashed the upgrade yet. Once they do that, we'll see if they have done the "impossible" -creating an unbreakable, non-exploitable Knox.

These root issues usually take a little time for the developers to find a workaround. I guess we'll see. I think that the breakthrough for those already on KK will occur after Verizon releases their version, considering how many VZN Note 3s there are. There's a lot of incentive there.

Other than warranty is there any other reason to care if you trip knox?

Certain people in sensitive positions or the companies/agencies that they work for might care.

The rest of us? Only if we try to sell the device down the road to someone who cares about it.

Re: Kitkat update disabling use of external micro SD Card

When someone whines and complains about every OS out there and moves from one to the next...it's usually a case of PEBKAC. This isn't me being hostile; it's just a response to your rants.
No it's you being a ****.

Without rooting the phone only the builtin/system/google/OEM/carrier music player and file manager have the correct permissions to modify the external SD card on KitKat (at least on the Galaxy note 3 from tmobile). All third party applications are no longer able to modify files In the root of the SD card (example /Music and /Photos)... So... yes... as of now "upgrading" to 4.4.2 will prevent you from using android file transfer or other media management software.....

Also, the third party apps can only write to their OWN folders on the SD card. Once the application is uninstalled, THAT FOLDER WILL ALSO BE DELETED.... so it is not a good place for music files/pictures that should be usable by multiple apps.
I'm just now seeing this whole thread and issue. All I have to say is "wow". Is Google turning into another Apple? Didn't they learn anything from the massive amounts of users/customers that moved FROM Apple to Android specifically because of this kind of big brother behaviour?

If I have music on my SD card I want every music player to be able to see it. Same with SMS messages and photos, etc etc. Security is my concern and I don't need/want big brother ruining my experience in the name of greed.

This is a showstopper for many.

That's a very cavalier and arrogant approach. That's like saying that your new car won't function well with the onboard computer firmware from the factory and what you should do is open the sealed computer module and create your own firmware version. What would you do if you were not a mechanic and that was the proposed solution to your problem on your $30,000 2014 car? Because even if they have not fixed it, the dealer will tell you to take a hike once they see you have messed with it. You paid for a fully-functional car and it's THEIR problem to fix it, not yours.

A great deal of the whole concept behind android is that it is open platform and google will not hamper your efforts to have your device your own way.

If I root, I void a warranty which is worth a great deal.
What a rediculous argument. First off rooting a phone is nothing like "opening the computer module on a 30,000 dollar car". Secondly you assume that the people rooting care about the warranty more than regaining functionality that only rooting can provide. You would be, well, assuming.

As for Google they appear to be doing exactly that, closing down the platform and hampering with our efforts to have the device our way.

It will put them out of the phone business.

I sure hope Google is listening. What bull$&!#. I'll just take my @$$ back to iPhone if this is how it's going to be. Wow! I create directories, add and remove files on my SD card ALL the time! Google, are you stupid?

Google never listens. Folks want usable sd card, maps 6.x, unlocked bootloaders, etc. Google could care less. They want maximum monetization which means getting us all on the cloud and getting us to pay through the nose for it.

Really not. I have zero issue. If you do, you should learn how to deal with the problem. There are millions of KitKat users who don't have any issues with this. It doesn't look like you even have KitKat on your device, so your posts are not really noteworthy. More like you trolling the boards with all of the 3 whole uninformative posts.

Sorry if I'm being a pain, but does this mean I'll have to create a "predefined folder" from my pc on the sd card first so that they can save to my sd card? I use my sd card ALOT for storage of photos, music, videos, files and such. If I have to keep using my pc to create and transfer files to the sd card then I'll hold onto JB at this point.

Android will create the folder automatically.

Well, there is this scenario. I take a picture with the stock camera. I then can use stock app Gallery to view those pictures, but in 4.3 I could also use QuickPic. If I wanted to tweak one of those pictures to make a background image, I could also use the Blur app. With 4.4, it sounds like I would need to duplicate the original picture folder that Gallery used, 2 more times for QuickPic and Blur. Same thing if I wanted to look at movies, I could use the stock Video app, but I may prefer to use MX Player Pro. For music I have the stock Music app, Double Twist or PowerAmp.

Actually, *reading* from the SDCard works exactly how it always has. So, no, you wouldn't have to duplicate a file across different folders for different apps to access it.

Now, if you took a photo with the stock camera app, and then opening it in PhotoshopExpress, then when you saved your changes PhotoshopExpress would have to save the new file in it's own folder and would not be able to overwrite the original photo.

This does not prevent you from using 3rd party apps to access any file on your SDCard. That still works just like it always has.

THAT's not this issue. yes, sock on-board apps will be able to write to the SD.
Third-party will only be able to write their own folders. So a photo editing app cannot go and get access to your DCIM or PHOTOS folder. It can only access read/write from/to the folder it itself has created.

Obviously this is a greater problem for some apps than others.
If you are used to moving, copying, deleting and making folders on the SD using an "Explorer" app, you won't be able to do this now.
The only way to manage files on the SD (and between internal and SD) is to connect (VIA USB) to a PC, and move all the files to the PC then move them back to the SD.
THAT's the real problem; you cannot manage your files anymore on a mobile basis.

That and all the devs that are pooched because their apps utilize other folders. With no heads-up from google.

While you're not wrong about the File Manager apps, a photo editing app *can* access photos in the DCIM folder, it just can't save the edited file in the DCIM and would have to save it in it's own folder.
