SOLVED: I had the same problem as most others here - i.e. the screen wouldn't turn off during calls.
The test utility (dial *#0*#) was showing that the proximity sensor was working fine - i.e. ADC value increasing from c.70 to 1004 as I put my hand over the sensor. So I assumed that it must have been a software issue. However, despite my skepticism I tried blowing compressed air into the ear-piece - AND IT SOLVED THE PROBLEM!
Interestingly, I noticed that before I cleaned the earpiece the test utility only changed values when I put my hand over the sensor, but after cleaning it not only changed the values but it also turned the screen green and vibrated - no idea what the difference was but clearly it was detecting and indicating something had changed.
Hope this helps.
