Note 5 vs Note 4

If the rumor of a 4100mah battery turns out to be true I will seriously consider upgrading from my Note 4. I don't have a spare battery and don't use an SD card so they won't affect me. A big battery, wireless charging, and hopefully more streamlined software all sound good to me.

The reception and signal strength have dropped considerably after upgrading to Lollipop on Verizon. I'm hoping 5.1.1 fixes it. If they bring out a developers edition Note 5 that is the way I will go.
If your Note 4 is the one that runs SD805, you can just root it and get custom ROM such as the CM12.1, which is what I'm running. You can then use the app called Cyandelta to get small size updates instead of the full 260 mb everytime. It's so stable and fast, you would save money until you really find a phone that you love (I'm suggesting this as I see you are open to developer device).

As far as I know, there is no root for Verizon Note 4's. We are this close to the Note 5 release so I will just wait and see what the specs really are and if there is a developers edition. I don't like to tinker with the phones, I prefer to set them up once and never touch them again. I'm just not totally satisfied with all the extra crap on my phone and the poor signal quality now that it is on Lollipop.

No sd is a deal killer.
I'll say this 1000 Times. No unlimited data means I need enough on board storage for photos, music, video etc. I can't afford to stream everything from the cloud.

Until universal unlimited data is a reality (again) we need expandable memory. Bottom line.

I plan on keeping my Note 4 until mid to late 2016 as the Note 5 is NOT a big improvement over the Note 4, especially with them taking away the removable battery & SD card. I've never rooted before... is it hard to do and really worth doing? If so, can you give me a link on doing that or at least some info?
It is not difficult, however you need to do a little bit of literature reading for the sake of your money and convenience.

Go to this site http://galaxynote4root.com.

Do quite a bit of reading around the net to prepare yourself. And get ready to enjoy your device.

There are a few things you will also need to understand, for example the camera on your phone is made of two major parts - hardware and software. For Samsung to get it as good as they do, they license software technology that enables the device to do some amazing processing (this is why their 16 MP camera is able to outdoor for a general example a 20.7 MP Sony camera). That piece of software is proprietary.

So why am I telling this? It's is that the custom ROMs that are not based on TouchWiz might not be able to produce as great images as you get on their cameras. You will still be able to write with your S Pen and sign document or use it like you use your finger, but you won't be able to do fancy pen work like the capability to hover and open gallery and such, those are specific TouchWiz packages.

So you have a duty to decide whether you can live without all the fancy TouchWiz stuff. For me it was easy because I use the pen to sign documents a lot and navigate my phone to keep my screen clean, but not much of the fancy things that the Split Pen can also do.

I can also live with the camera as it's not bad, it's just not as amazing as when you run it with original firmware.

Good luck and take care.

Well, not only am I disappointed that all the leaks, rumors, and whatnot were true but also that there was not surprise of value at all by the official announcement. If they're just going to leak all the details 2 months early why bother to have an event at all. It was kinda cool when Apple would announce something and you got to be surprised. Yes, I know Samsung is not Apple. Yes, I'm a little disappointed that all the rumors that I didn't want to be true are precisely point on.

I'll get over it.

Today I have a new fondness for my Note 4.

Sounds like a poorly done study. Any study that highlights one case probably does not have enough of a sample size to be more than anicdotal.

Will the Note 5 be RAW image capable? That's a big deal to be.... getting RAW images into lightroom.

Edit: it does support RAW. I'm in.

Sd cards are not dead yet. It is a big market with lots of vendors. I do like plugging in a small SSD to my phone once in a while though :)

I think it is more Engineering pride than apathy. 'I designed it without full sd card support so it must be better.'
If Marketing doesn't get you the Engineering will; have a beer.

Most of the time I'll have my mirror less Sony alpha or my canon 1dx but for those times I need to rely on my phone ("the best camera in the world is the one you have with you") it will be sweet for the couple shots I take!

Wow sorry to see the rumors confirmed.

I moved from iPhone to Note4 for the external battery and SD card both which have been very useful, and now Samsung has decided to go the same route as Apple so has made it easy to ignore the Note5.

I will hold on to the Note4 for a while and hope other Android makers don't follow suit, they aren't going to outdo Apple at their own form over function game, the competitive advantage for the Note line was on additional power user features, which is lost now.

I for one am glad Samsung did away with the removable battery and storage. I refuse to upgrade to the note 5. I have upgraded every year and wasted hundreds of dollars on Note Phones. Samsung has made it easy for me to walk away from the Note 5. This would not be an upgrade to my Note 4. Thank you Samsung.

I think I have my last Note in my hands. I love it but Samsung is going toward taking everyone prisoner to what they decide we should have/do. Not long ago I would have complained about storage and sealed battery but I am over that since I don't run dry or need to do pulls anymore. And with cloud I have plenty of storage. What BUGS me is all this mandated crapware taking up space and memory. I never NEEDED to root but I LIKED to just because I like tinkering with my devices. They made it so hard that Note 4 can't be rooted. I am not in any hurry to change and I'll miss SideSync when I do but I'll probably eventually go to a Nexus or something more open.

P.S. I am amending my memory comment to say I know it's not a functional concern. It just annoys me that they add all that additional memory to run stuff I do not want at all.

+1

Maybe you didn't bash me but you were clearly siding with the Note 5.

Make up your mind women.. a few posts back you bashed me for choosing the Note 4 over the Note 5.

Huh? You must have misread my post. The Note 4 is better than the Note 5 IMO.

I traded in my s6 for a Note 4 today since Tmobile is deep discounting them and giving $401 dollars trade in for S6 right now. If the Note 5 is anything like the S6 please stick with the Note 4. Maybe if sales on the Note 5 are bad they will on the Note 6 change it up and use a larger battery.

Makes no sense why they did away with the IR blaster and removable store. I know it's probably for profits so they can sell yo a higher GB model.
