NEW VERSION AVAILABLE: See first post.

NEW VERSION: Froyo EC05 Prerooted/ClockWorkMod v2.5.1.0 (RFS Filesystem) Odexed. [ FULL WIPE ]

Thanks for the info.
I'm downloading now.
This will be my second time using Odin. WOoHoO

Thanks! You popped my Odin cherry.

I went from stock eclair rooted /w oneclickroot 2.5.5. Odin only took 2 mins, boot up took 3-4. Perfect! Verified it is rooted.

Great job guys! Keep it up!

I've asked this question a couple of times in another thread and can't get an answer.

I have stock 2.1 straight out of the box & unrooted...

If I do the OTA update to froyo I assume that my data will be preserved. Correct?

If I do the manual update.zip to froyo will I lose any data? If not, is there any advantage to using this method with Odin and the "no data loss" version over manual update.zip? I assume not and that this method using Odin is really targetted at people with rooted phones & ROMs. Correct?

If I don't get the OTA by the end of the night I'm going to do it myself and just want to know what the easiest way to manually install froyo is without losing any of my data.

Thank you.

I could be wrong, but i think if you go from stock 2.1 to 2.2 via OTA you end up loosing data anyway... just make sure all your contacts are sync'd and ect.

depending on what you want to save, i'd say temp root with Z4, titanium back up all apps and data, update.

Read the first post - there are two download rar files:

One is a Full Wipe - meaning you will loss your data

The other will or should keep your data intact

uscpsycho- you may want to do the full wipe anyway because it seems to cuase less problems after EC05 install. I've downloaded the update but am waiting tonight to install and wipe when I have some free time.

I find this hard to believe. I don't think Sprint would push an OTA update that would wipe millions of unsuspecting customers' data out. Would they???

I'm assuming the OTA won't wipe data out, can someone confirm?

Thanks but this doesn't answer any of my questions.

Do you mean less problems vs Odin "save data" update or vs OTA update? Or both?

I'm not totally opposed to a full wipe if I can somehow back up EVERYTHING from 2.1 and restore EVERYTHING back into froyo including settings, ringtones, SMS, etc. Is there a way to do that with a non-rooted phone? I know one of the really good backup programs requires a rooted phone.

Thank you.

LOL have you ever updated a version of android before? You best believe that when upgrading from versions of android people loose settings, ring tones and sms. They ask you to make sure you have things backed up before hand. Its happened with my Hero, Evo and Epic.

OH CRAP!!!

No, I've never updated Android before, this is my first Android phone.

So if I use the "no data loss" update method in this thread I'll have froyo and everything will transfer over? Think that's what I'm going to do. Does this method require a rooted phone??? If so what's the simplest way to root?

If I decide to do a full wipe without rooting my phone what's the best way to copy EVERYTHING from my non-rooted stock 2.1 phone over to froyo after I update?

TIA!

This, too, is my first Android phone, but don't worry, the team here at AC has yet to let me down.

I can tell you that I was on EB13 + Rooted CW 2.5.5 or whatever it is. I used the No Data Loss version and it worked like a charm! I am now on EC05 and have all my data (though I did use Titanium Backup to make backups just in case).

Thank you again for the great information!

You, sir, are the CITIZEN OF THE YEAR! I was on EB13, rooted with one click, which of course removed some Sprint bloatware (e.g., Asphalt). This meant no OTA, not that anyone with EB13 was receiving the OTA. I followed your instructions, and all worked PERFECTLY. You made my life in EpicLand so much better. I thank you for all your good work.

This will save your data, you may possibly loose your texts, that I'm not positive about. But applications you have downloaded and their data should remain in tact if you use the NO WIPE method provided here. This will install EC05 Froyo, root and install CWM 2.5.1.0 all in one package.

You would have to root your phone as is right now and then use Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root to backup your data. Then once you choose how your going to update to Froyo EC05, you would need root again to install Titanium or MyBackUP (whichever you used) to restore your DATA ONLY after downloading your apps manually.

Now I'm really, really confused. Few questions...

1) Does the "no data loss" Odin method require the phone to be rooted already? If so, what is easiest way to root?

2) When complete, will the "no data loss" method leave me with a rooted phone or will the phone be the same as if I got an OTA update?

3) What is CWM?

4) If I use Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root why do I have to manually download my apps? I thought these apps backed up your apps and data. And can someone confirm if either one of these apps will back up my SMS?

In a nutshell what I want at the end of the day is an non-rooted phone with froyo and all my data. How do I get from a non-rooted DI18 to non-rooted EC05 with data intact?

I probably sound like I'm technically hopeless which couldn't be farther from the truth. But I am not savvy when it comes to Android modifications, this isn't my domain. If someone can walk me through the process without 1000 acornyms I'd really appreciate it.

I'm sure it's just a few steps but all the threads seem geared for people who have their phones rooted and jacked up with ROMs. I just want plain vanilla froyo with my data transfered over. If I have to root my phone in the process that's fine but in the end I'd like my phone to be stock froyo. HELP!

Many thanks in advance.

I'm having the exact same issue as bjs188. Can someone PLEASE help us out? the only difference I'm having from him is that odin never gets past zimage... it then sits there for maybe three minutes, and then the phone promptly shuts off. Odin still reads no issues and i've left it sitting there for another ten minutes with no luck. when i unplug the phone, odin finally gives me a "FAIL!" message. When i try to boot the phone or get into recovery, the phone shows the little "phone/!/pc" icon that bjs188 described. I have tried multiple times, and yes, I HAVE tried without the battery. the only difference w/o the battery is a get a fail w/o the phone turning off or being unplugged. does anyone have a link to the swupdate package w/ eb13 so i can try bringing my phone back to life? or better yet, the DI18 package for odin so i can just just the EC05.zip in recovery?

1. Using odin(samsung program) does not require root.

2. By using odin to apply the .tar file in the 1st post you will have a stock rooted phone.

3. CWM= Clockwork recovery mod

4. If you use one of those apps you can back up your apps with the data associated with those apps, myback up root always you to also back up sms/mms(I don't know about titanium). Although you should only restore select data from those apps because they are likely to force close since you are coming from 2.1

and: How do I get from a non-rooted DI18 to non-rooted EC05 with data intact?
For this just wait for the OTA to hit your phone.
