I have a follow-up question. I successfully installed sc 2.8. In the future when/ if there is an updated version, do we follow the same steps to update or should we do a factory reset then update? What happens if you do a factory reset when rooted?

Yeah, it's referring to the firmware of your camera not the firmware of your phone.

I'm still new to all this, so I figured its better to ask questions first. I flashed Superclean 2.8 but I wanted to make a backup of my phone, but from what I've read you make backups with ROM Manager and with Superclean we aren't suppose to install ROM Manager right?

My personal suggestion it to root your phone and use Titanium Backup. There are some other applications that do similar functions, but I cannot attest to them. I purchased Ti Backup, and it's fantastic.

When you run it the first time, it will ask you for root rights. Approve the rights if you've rooted, otherwise it won't work.

There will be a Batch function for you to run in Titanium (there is a free and paid version) where you can backup all of your applications and system data. I would personally just backup the applications.

Then pull the trigger. Follow the instructions DXC has laid out on the first post, and when you get the phone booted back to the desktop, it will already be rooted. Download Titanium from the market and then use the Restore applications function, and then sit back and watch your apps get restored.

The only problem with the unpaid version is that you have to tap and approve all of your apps. With the paid version, you tap once to start the process and then come back when done... and everything is automatically approved.

I read all 200+ pages before I opted to pull the trigger, so don't feel bad if you're feeling cagey about pulling the trigger. I also read all of the posts from Adrynalyne's thread that was just recently closed and started over. So you're looking at some 400 pages, just between two threads.

DXC really does have it laid out pretty straight forward. The short version of what to do:

• download update.zip and place it on the the SD card (not in a folder)

• download and install the drivers

• download Odin

• download your choice of ROM packages (personally EB16SC28_DXC.tar is my choice if you want all of the Verizon stuff removed and the cleanest phone)

then follow steps 4 - 16 on that first post to get your phone flashed.

If you have issues with flashing, there are several people around here to help get you through the issue.

standupdad: Thank you for your post and I appreciate, but I guess I was unclear by what I meant. I'm currently running Superclean 2.8 already, but I want to make an image of my phone's current state, just in case something where to happen. My problem is I don't really know how to use CWM or ROM Manager to do that.

Its funny you should mention reading all 200+ pages, I did the same thing and even spent an hour deciding if I should buy the full version of Titanium!

Gotcha.

Firstly, I can't help you with the making of an image based on the phone's current state other than applications through Titanium. I'm not a CWM or ROM Manager type of person, so others will have to chime in and assist you there, but with that said...

Consider that if you had a problem with your phone that you may be re-introducing something to your phone after you run your restore. That's why it is exponentially better to add things back to the phone incrementally. I know that's annoying and time consuming, and is why I like the non-wipe versions of the packages that DXC creates, as I refuse to do that incremental thing.

... and is ultimately why there are so many versions of these packages. Choices are a wonderful thing.

Here is what I do using Titanium and CWM for backing up.

I get the phone to a clean state (optional)

I flash my desired ROM / Kernel

Install my apps setup my user settings etc (app settings such as login)

Once phone is where I want it I use Titanium backup just in case and backup apps + system data.

Once this is done I shut down to CWM RED Recovery

At first menu I choose Backup / Restore

Second menu Backup (this is a nandroid backup)

After this I reboot make sure everything is working still.

From here if I want a theme I download it to my SD Card and flash it using CQM Recovery.

When I want to replace that theme I restore my nandroid backup which puts my phone back the way it was before theme was installed. (new apps installed while theme was in place are still there with this method)

Then I either stay where I am at or flash another theme.

Also if I have a problem such as I am having now with FC or Market not working with steel blue theme I restore my nanadroid and I am back in business until I or somebody here helps me figure it out.

Way to go Suicide. You really are catching on to this stuff quickly.

SuD - Look at Suicide Shifts post. This is how you do a backup of your entire system, through clockworkmod recovery (CWM) and it is known as a nandroid backup. Titanium backup only does a backup of your apps.

Also Suicide I am going to try your method of doing nandroid backups without the theme. Jaekar99 and I have had a hell of a time restoring nandroid backups that include themes. We keep getting stuck in a force close loop at boot animation. I don't know why we didn't think of something as simple as that, we kept blaming cwm. It would make sense if we couldn't restore the nandroid backups with themes to just do a nandroid of everything except the theme and just flash a different theme if we wanted to switch. If it works you will have solved a huge issue that has been bothering us for a long time, so thank you very much for the helpful idea.

If Droid continues to post wipe and non-wipe versions of the files you can just use the non-wipe version of the file - then you won't lose any of your data. you can use the wipe version but then you would have to backup all of your contacts and apps before performing the updates. Then you can restore everything after updating.

Doing a factory reset wipes your phone completely and reverts you back to a stock completely fresh out of the box state, so it is not always necessary. When a new update comes out if you want to use the same method you used here in this thread all you will have to do is wait for DroidXcon to package up the new release in one of these ODIN packages and follow the advice given on whether to use the data wipe version or the no wipe version based on what build you are coming from. If you are going from one version to another of the same buid i.e. one ROM with an EB01 base to another ROM with an EB01 base, no wipe is necessary. If the next release is of a different build and not based on EB01, you will need to use the wipe package and make sure to back up your contacts and apps.

vjoaquin, check out my last post. You have to be careful about using the wipe vs non wipe. All of the latest ROMs released have all been based on the EB01 build. If say for example another Froyo build were leaked today it may be build EC08 or something close to that. Once DroidXcon put the packages together everyone would have to use the wipe version for the first time since everyone would be going from one build (EB01) to another (EC08). If the build numbers are the same, no wipe. If the build numbers are different, wipe.

Problem with apps on SD card

Okay, I need some help. I'm new to all this, just got my Fascinate a couple weeks ago and followed the OP to install "Debloated/Deodexed Froyo Leak+root+Froyo Clockworkmod"

Worked great and has been a dream for the last couple weeks, until earlier today when I rebooted my phone. When it came back up, all the apps that I had installed on my SD card have a default Android icon instead of their normal icons on the homescreen, and they don't show up at all in the app drawer. When I click on any of them, I get a message saying "Could not launch the requested activity."

I saw I had a notification with an Error symbol next to it, and it said something about unmounting and removing my SD card before trailing off for lack of room. I clicked on the notification expecting it to show me the full message, but it just cleared it, so I don't know if there was anything else I was supposed to know.

I navigated to the SD card with a file explorer and just got "directory empty"

So I did what I saw in the notification: unmounted the SD card, removed it, put it back in, and the card recognized and scanned it. I can navigate to it in the file explorer and all the files are there again. However, the 'shortcuts' on the homescreen are still broken, and the apps are still missing from the app drawer. The only way I have been able to get any of them to work again has been to re-install them from the market. I can do this with all of them if I have to, but I was wondering if there's anything I'm missing so that I can just somehow scan my SD card for all the missing apps to add back to the drawer or something.

Here's a screenshot of one of my homepages with a few broken app links.

The Mint.com, Barcode Scanner, Yellow Pages, Yellowbook, and Shopper apps are all on my SD card, while the rest are on my phone. The message on the sceen is after clicking on the Mint.com app.

Also, I'm using LauncherPro if that makes a difference.

why does anyone put apps on their SD card i dont understand why this is even an option... i would suggest moving the apps back onto your internal storage, not only will you eliminate this but your apps will respond faster...if i were you i would do a titanium backup and move all your files onto your pc.

Sounds to me like your card is corrupted.

if you plug and mount your sdcard on your computer it will most likely ask you to scan the card and fix problems , try that...if that does not work ,,,like i said back up the whole card to your computer...then from the phone unmount and format the card. move all the files back onto the card and you should be good unless it happens again which means your card may be bad....also blow on the connectors in the phone there may be dust or debris inside causing a bad connection

Yes. Do like I do, and since you're already at 2.6, download the SC28x_DXC package so you don't lose any data and have to redo everything. You'll have the backup just in case, but you'll see that you shouldn't need to restore anything after installing the no wipe version. Make sure you download the version with the little x after SC28
