Official Gingerbread for the Captivate?

That was the question of 2011 and now 2012. Where is it AT&T?

What frustrates me the most is that AT&T is a communications company and they are horrible at communicating. It is one thing to have delays, but I cannot understand why they have not communicated with the public about these delays and offered at least an estimated release date. I am not aware of any information released since their press release back in July saying that we would have it by the end of the year. They have left all of us in the dark and that is causing me to re-think who my next carrier will be.

Well they have jumped up to the ICS Value pack and forgot about Gingerbread. As of today, they are saying no ICS Value pack for Samsung Captivate owners. So pretty much we can forget about gingerbread as well. I am so DONE with freaking Samsung's crap!

Although it is disappointing we don't have Gingerbread for me it's not a big deal as in 4 months I'll be due for an upgrade and considering the impending release of quadcore phones using ICS Gingerbread is pretty much an afterthought. Which is most likely how AT&T looks at it too.

Phone technology moves at such a rapid pace even though the Captivate is a nice phone it is completely outdated and now that AT&T has become fully committed to the Android platform I'm sure their attention is/has been focused on upcoming state of the art phone introductions.

For us not getting Gingerbread I blame AT&T 100%. I believe if it were up to Samsung we'd have had it months ago. In my geographic locale what concerns me a lot more about AT&T is their lack of a robust 4G/LTE network in comparison to Verizon, may even cause me to hang on to my Captivate until late November and switch to Verizon.

IMHO the biggest reason we don't have Gingerbread is because AT&T did not want to devote the effort/expense necessary to modify it (i.e. add all their useless features).

I totally agree with you on this myt msi but this has left a sour taste in my mouth as well for Samsung. I have an upgrade coming in about the same time frame. Right now I am grandfathered in on the unlimited data with AT&T. If I go somewhere else I will be stuck in the tier programs. I was looking at Verizon but their track history recently of data outage kinda sits uneasy with me. I will continue to weigh my options.

Since there probably won't be an official Gingerbread update for the Captivate it doesn't matter if you can update to it or not.

FYI: I installed the the official leaked version of Android 2.3.5 to my captivate about 4 weeks ago. It runs great.

This is AT&T Release (Or leaked release) you don't need root, but you don't get the typical bloatware with it that AT&T includes. You won't be violating your warranty.

This site has a link to a video and instruction on how to update the firmware. I didn't use these instructions, I used another site, but these looks the same as what I used. I can't find the other website I used. It isn't hard to do.

I've been reading this forum for a long time, but registered today because I have a couple of questions and hope someone here can help.

This the "official" release for AT&T, correct?

This will be the first time I have done any updating to my phone. Is this a very simple procedure to do?

Does anyone know how long the download takes?

It is an offical release, you have to use the Kies Mini to obtain it.

It is simple, you install kies mini on your pc, then turn around run it, plug in your phone via the usb cable and click upgrade.

It took mine about 10-15 minutes to run the update.

I'm running a custom rom (Serendipity 6.4). Can I upgrade to stock Gingerbread without a wipe? Will it preserve my game data (like Angry Birds)? I realize that I'll lose root and the custom rom but I just want to know if personal data would remain the same? Or is it better to back up with Titanium Backup, revert to stock, update, re-root, and then copy my data back over?

If you have another ROM installed, other that the officially 2.2, it probably won't save your data (Like Angry Birds)...

You will lose root. I am not even sure if you are rooted if you can do the update since it is an official AT&T release. What I have read in the past, if you root your phone and an official release comes out, you can't install it. I might be wrong though.

Let me if know if you install it while still having root. I am curious what will happen.

The official BETA release of 2.3 is worth the upgrade. It is faster than 2.2 and runs very well. But if you are fine with Android 2.2, stay with Android 2.2.

AT&T/Samsung did fix a few problem in the 2.3 release. The link that is post earlier, that shows you how to install it, has a list of things it fixes. But you will notice a performance increase. The Captivate is still a great phone, there is no need to go out and get the latest duo core phones. The Captivate, with its 1ghz CPU and graphics coprocessor, is still an excellent phone.

AT&T is now selling them for 1 cent with the 2 year contract. 2 month ago, I retired my Motorola Backflip and got one of these Samsung Captivates for a penny.

Few of my friends have the duo core. I don't notice to much of a speed difference when messing with them, but I know they are a lot faster when running a bench mark. They are nice and all, but 1 penny to $199 to $399 is a much better deal. I can still run all the games they run and it still emulates roms of N64, SNES, MAME and Sega Genesis excellent. Captivate is a awesome phone for the price.

Kelly, you can do it. The instructions are clear. Make sure you have the Kies, which will install the drivers for your Windows machine.

I"m getting ready to start in a bit. I noticed the Samsung site said uninstall any Samsung drivers on your computer first. Do I really need to do that? I have connected my phone to my computer to charge and move files around from my SD card. It installed some drivers when I connected it to my phone. Do I really need to uninstall those drivers?

Not sure about that. I would think as long as your computer is seeing your phone correctly, it isn't an issue.

well i've also noticed it says it will wipe everything off your phone, but some that have done the update says that it didn't wipe everything off their phone.

need some help here. i started the update through kies and the binaries finished downloading but now the firmware update bar will not go past 9% and my screen is blue. any suggestions/help?
