Official vendor Android OS or Aftermarket ROM?

Wanted to ask an honest question about user preferences for their Android OS provider.

Do you prefer to wait for vendor releases or are you willing to take the plunge into a third party provided Android OS?

Here are a few advantages of going with the third party option (I am biased). Would love to get other people's input.

  • Significantly better computing, graphics and battery performance.
  • New driver features for wifi, etc. available sometimes a year ahead of the vendor.
  • New UI features and newer Android features well ahead of the vendor.
  • Full control of your device for configuration, tuning, etc.
  • Real support from Android experts.
  • In the case of this lastest Galaxy Tablet release, no data loss to upgrade

Not wanting to start a flame war. Would like honest thoughtful opinion. Thanks for taking the time.

Would love to try it and actually did download, but felt that for someone who is a windows user without much linux experience, the instructions seemed as clear as mud. Could probably stumble through it - but it's not really the sort of toy I want to brick doing it wrong.

Fair point. The actual install of the ROM could not be easier with need only to put the .zip file on the device and run the install process from the recovery kernel.

The trick is in getting a recovery kernel installed that allows you to run that install process. We're currently working on a one-click solution to that that will run on Windows, Mac and Linux. Should be ready to go when we release our v1.0 ROM.

Getting CWM on the Tab is incredibly easy. But since it involves using Odin it is also very easy for someone to miss-click or do something boneheaded and screw up their tab.

Speaking for myself, I'm the kind of person who likes android simply because of the fact that it's easy to dive into 3rd party and leaked roms. For the tab, I've tried pretty much every rom available and I'm looking forward to trying out a Bonsai rom based on the official TW update.
