Ok Pixel owners - the S8 is here. Who's jumping ship?

Well . . . I bought a Pixel only a week ago. Loved it, was excited about the camera. Took some photos at the weekend. WTF! That lens flare! Any time there was a light source in front of the phone I got flare - either an arc of white or a misty effect over the whole photo. I'm not talking of the light source in the frame either. I took a pic of a family member sitting on a chair in front of a window - no direct sunlight, and got flare. Never seen anything as bad before on any phone or camera. My best photos have been taken against the light so it was pretty significant for me. I returned the phone and pre-ordered an S8. I had an S7 before the Pixel and got some lovely photos on it - actually more pleasing than those from the Pixel.

I feel your pain. However, jumping from Pixel to Samsung S8 is like jumping from the frying pan to the fire. It will just be increasing pain from now on.

I am not a techie of a writer but I have had many Samsung since the S3 series. Key three issues:
- Samsung will begin slowing down and lagging from day one.
- Despite being overpriced, you will be lucky to have an Android update after the first year.
- The only OS and security updates you have will be at best six months late.

The company has no sense of costumer service...this is Samsung for you!

I am not touching the Samsung S8 with a barge pole. I am neither Bill Gates not Warren Buffett in terms of wealth. Therefore, I am economical about my money and I intend to keep my phone for at least a year.

I have had a Samsung Galaxy S6, S7 Edge and latterly an S7 and have never experienced the slowdown you mention. If I got even an inkling of it I would reset back to factory settings and start afresh. Absolutely not a problem. I bought a Pixel because I was wooed by 'stock' Android but quickly realised that Google has its own take on Android just as Samsung does. I actually like the extra Samsung polish and am quite happy with Nova Launcher set up on it to look like the Pixel Launcher - I did the same thing on the Pixel too. I was running Nougat on my S7 back in December. Samsung has really upped its game with security updates too - on my S7 I normally had the update for the current calendar month.

The Pixel lens flare/halo issue was an absolute deal-breaker for me. Had it not exhibited this hardware fault I would have kept it. It's no good people saying 'my Pixel doesn't have it' because Google admits its an issue and all Pixels are affected, but it obviously depends on how you shoot your photos as to whether it will affect you. I wasn't aware of the issue before I purchased the phone but saw it within my first five photos.

I've had mine since last Wednesday, and no slow down at all. It may slow down over time, but the S8 software is nothing like anything Samsung has ever shipped. (the S7 edge and Note 7 I had both had lag issues after about a week) They've definitely made some good changes with the S8.

As for updates, they had the April security patch ready to go for launch day distribution, so that would seem to shoot a hole in your theory.

Regardless, I'm still not sure if I'll keep the S8+. There's an emotional attachment thing with the Pixel that I'm just not feeling from the S8+.

I have made the swap. Samsung did well.. this s8 plus is pretty sweet.

I ditched my Pixel. In all the software was great but the design and hardware was bland and build quality cheap. Put next to the S8, and even removing the bezel difference the phone felt cheap.

Just the opposite for me. I spent some time at a Verizon store playing with the S8 today. I knew I didn't like the curved edge to start with, but the aspect ratio, especially for the S8 plus is just weird. The screen is just crazy tall and thin. I like the screen on the Pixel XL so much more. No way would I consider switching. Plus I don't want to wait months for security updates.

Build quality cheap? How so?

After two months or so, the buttons on my Pixel had a noticeable rattle. It was extremely annoying. Secondly, although I was laughed at a bit for pointing it out, the Pixel has a slightly hollow feel when tapped. It doesn't feel solid, and it's al.kst like you can notice the gap between the motherboard and the frame or chassis of the phone. With the S8, it's as solid as a single glad piece of glass. I also had significant scratching on the back glass of the Pixel as well.

Crazy, sorry to hear that

the + 4 gb bloat will work its magic in few weeks. the only way to be lag free is to do a format every month

exactly. if the user is OK with this than all the best but the reality ive realized Sammy is every few months they do need a refresh.

I won't switch to an S8 or any other non-Google phone. I like the first party devices. Though every time I see the pictures and videos of the S8 I say to myself, "Wow, that screen looks great!", but I am fine with the Pixel.
