So I've discovered that a lot of the texts my phone is sending to people are coming out weird.
They all have spaces in between the letters, and upside down question marks when I never even put question marks in the text.
This also happens with my girlfriends phone, who has the Optimus V but is running stock ROM and a different keyboard than me. (I'm using IHO with Swype, she's using stock with Android keyboard)
People with various phones on various carriers are receiving my texts all screwed up... So that leads me to believe it's an OV issue...
Any ideas? this has been bugging me lately. :/

Only had this happen once to me. Was using Swype and set it to Spanish, saw the text on the other line and bam! Nothing but jumbled up symbols. Set it back to English and all was fine.

This happens whenever you sent sms with non-ASCII characters. I believe it's a vm issue, not ov or Android.

My wife and I exchange messages in Danish all the time, and it's a pain in the butt having to correct Swype words to alternatively spellings. Just a single non-ASCII char is all it takes to garble the entire message.

I can't believe vm hasn't fixed it yet considering how many customers they must have who want to exchange messages with family and friends in Spanish, Russian, Italian, German, Vietnamese etc.

Update: never had this problem before on AT&T or T-mobile. Admittedly those were not Android phones, but hey, Android is used all over the world.

I can say with certainty, though, that it's NOT the Swype language setting that causes this, but rather the content of the msg itself.

I have exchanged many messages with Swype set to Spanish that went through just fine, as long as they were only a-z and standard punctuation.

Conversely, I've sent messages with Swype set to English (or with stock keyboard) that garbled because of non-ASCII character. It's complete consistent - at least on the two ov's that we have. Stock ROM (built-in Swype) or IHO (Swype beta) made no difference.

Any ideas of certain punctuation marks that may cause this? I generally use standard words and punctuation..

I just did a little test: The following are all vm-safe punctuation:

!#=/+?@$&_[{(< ]})>.,;

But thinking about it, I'm almost certain I can say what happened if you didn't use any fancy characters and the msg was garbled: a tab character. It looks like a space, and is easily entered inadvertently with Swype.

If you go to the symbol keyboard on Swype (pressing the key to the left of the comma/dash key) your space bar will now enter a tab if you accidentally long press it. And if you go to the second level symbol keyboard (hit shift while in symbol mode) space bar will ALWAYS enter a tab.

Tab causes your msg to garble - but you may not see it because it looks like a space.

That's gotta be it.

Very strange, since the other phone was sending jumpy messages too but using the stock keyboard. Virgin Mobile should jump on this and make a fix already.. Haha.

Well you can enter fancy characters with stock keyboard (such as accented letters). I forget if it's by long press or through the symbol keyboard, but it certainly has that capability. And maybe the stock Swype does tab character as well.
