To get a dump of the ROM, do the following:
1. Connect phone to computer via USB cable.
2. Enable USB Debugging in Settings->Applications->Development
3. Open command/terminal window
4. Type "adb pull / C:\systemdump" (without the "")
5. Navigate to the root of your C drive, and compress the folder labeled "systemdump" into a .zip archive.
6. Upload the .zip archive to a website like 4shared, Mediafire, or Dropbox.
Root privileges are only required for writing to the phone, not pulling.
Got it. Uploading now.

Just get "Hotspot Widget", and you can bypass the hotspot block. I tested it and my old Pre picked up the access point. No rooting needed.
It does appear to activate the hotspot feature in the phone, and I can use the widgets notification icon to configure the hotspot. The network is visible to my Win7 laptop, and I can connect. But there, the fun stops. It's the dreaded limited connectivity situation. Anybody have any better luck?
BTW, I got my V at a Target a couple of days ago. Interesting story: I called to inquire about it. The guy in electronics said that he'd never heard of it. I offered the internal Target stock number. He looked it up, and said, "Can you hang on?" Duh, yeah. After what sounded like a long walk, he said, "Yeah, I have one right here." "Can you put that behind the counter for me? I'll be right there," I say. He says, "I'll tape your name to it, and take it up to customer service. You can pick it up and pay for it there." Of course, I already had my jacket on by the time this conversation was over. Picked it up and it activated just fine (already had VM service, so I just used their website to plug in the new ESN, and I already new how to program the phone number and network ID into the phone). I really like the phone - it's easy to see why so many carriers have them, and why so many people have bought them.
What's the Target stock number?
That's exactly how I did it. I'm not even sure if they were really supposed to sell it or not.I also bought the phone early by asking the electronics person to check the DCPI number and he brought it from the back.

thanks for the info. i heard that VM use old towers from Sprint, so VM signal quality might not be as equal to Sprint's?
Also, VM cannot roam, am i correct?
In my experience coverage is the same. VM doesn't have 4G like Sprint, but otherwise is identical, but YMMV. And you are correct, there is no roaming.
I have heard in the optimus s forum that you can change your PRL to include other's tower as in-network. I wonder if we can do that in optimus v (and VM) to add the standard sprint roaming list back?
