OTA Gingerbread!

The RUU for 4.06.605.03 has been posted over at XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263269 . NOTE: applying the RUU WILL ERASE YOUR PHONE DATA.

I just applied it via the HBOOT method and looks the same as going from Froyo to GB via the 4.06.605.03 OTA. Could be some very subtle differences but I can't see them yet. The build.prop is still messed up and the GPS nag is still there.

I think I'm just going to sit on my .2 build since it seems a .4 build is likely coming given the complete halt of the .3 OTA update...

This is a little off topic but I'm hoping someone in this thread will have an idea of what might have gone wrong. I upgraded per PvilleComp's directions (thanks BTW) and everything seemed to be OK. However, now I can't receive texts. I can send and everything else works fine. Have updated again several times but no luck. Any ideas?

Try clearing the cache and data out of the messaging app under menu -> settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> All

Clearing the Data will also erase your currently stored messages so you may want to use one of the market apps to back them up to Gmail first if they are important to you.

I could finally wait no longer, so I went ahead and downloaded and installed the update a few minutes ago.

First impressions:

The restarting problem is acute. The phone has restarted on its own AFTER the whole update process was completed 5 times in the 5 minutes following the update.

That has of course given me the opportunity to see if the booting process is indeed faster, as everybody has been claiming it is. No such luck on my phone. It still takes a very long time

The status bar is marginally wider, miniscule difference really but visible to me. The "3G" font has changed slightly - it looks more like 4G does in some of the adverts on Verizon's website.

Some people said that "Network name" is Sprint for them - for me it is Verizon Wireless as it should be.

I get the impression some apps are missing, but I use 20% of the apps on my phone in any case, so I won't miss them for a while.

I use Beautiful Widgets, SwiftKey X keyboard, Handscent SMS, and LauncherPro. So I won't be able to see in any case, the changes that Gingerbread makes to the flipclock, keyboard, texting software and theme.

Still no OTA update for me. Is it really going to take weeks / months for it to roll out?

They've (apparently) stopped pushing it out while they fix the bugs. Right now without exception the market thinks the phone is on Sprint and the about phone hardware info says it has a 4.3 inch screen, also the random rebooting issue a lot of people seem to be having.

For the record I have had no random reboots and have 480-some hours of up-time.

this doesn't root my phone does it, its the official update for the phone right

It's an official build which was pushed to a select few users and manually installed by many of us before Verizon/HTC pulled it due to the bugs. I recommend you not install it yet unless you are an advanced user.

No it will not root your phone, however it is possible (though unlikely) that those of us with this build installed will not get the OTA or if we do it may have issues. Those are the risks we play when we do things manually.

For what it's worth.....I've installed the update on seven different Dincs now inluding my own. There have been absolutely No problems other than needing to update some Apps.....and I had to uninstall and reinstall HandCent on one phone. After that.....No Worries.

The Phone is most definitely faster and smoother....BUT....after all the reports of problems by so many other users, it really is hard to Recommend this update at this point. It would seem that all Dincs are not equal....whether user modified, factory modified or because of some possibly unstable or conflicting Apps on your phone. It would appear that this OTA was not "fully baked" yet and it's hard to ignore all the complaints.

So.....at this point, you should think long before attempting this Manual Update. If you do try it.....and it doesn't install quickly and easy and painlessly....Abort. There is likely some sort of "conflict" with your phone and it's much better to just wait for the Next Update or consider Rooting and flashing one of the Ginger Roms available.....or just leave things as they are. There is NOT that much of a Difference. I am truly surprised at all the various "problems" that have shown up.....as I have seen None of these. However, it's hard to recommend the Risk/Reward factor for this Update as it stands now after using the Update for a couple of weeks.

Like many....I am exploring the Dinc HD? (Vigor) as my future phone. Best of Luck....D

Keep an eye on those DIncs. I didn't have any major problem until a week later. Those phones of yours may start choking any day now.

Tbolt.....thanks for the warning? and actually I have been watching my phone and the others I Updated closely....as I feel some responsibilty. But so far.....it has actually been Three weeks instead of two now with No Problems of any kind. I posted Simple Install Instructions on the first page of this thread Three Weeks ago.

It does make you wonder how some phones can Update successfully, while others have problems. Having said that.....I am of course a bit wary after all the reported Problems and have stopped recommending the Update to friends for now. I would really hope this gets resolved soon for Everyone....D

Yea, I wish I knew what the trigger was that caused a reasonably good update to go bad all of a sudden.

A factory reset fixed everything, for now anyway. :)

So does anyone know if VZ is working on a solution to this problem? I am getting pretty frustrated and am looking to do a factory reset if that works. I don't want a refurb Dinc2. If I get a Dinc2 I want a new one. I like my Dinc so am hopeful VZ is doing something to fix and stabilize GB. Does a factory reset really work in fixing the issues? I have read that is does with some and not with others. Thanks.

Which problem are you referring to? The general stability issues will probably be fixed by a factory data reset but if you mean the phone thinking it is on Sprint and having a 4.3 screen unfortunately that will require an update and I am sure they are working on that.

That is what I was referring to. All the issues with 2.3.4. Sprint, screen, and all other issues caused by the OTA. I will try a reset to see if it fixes some of them until the fix comes from VZ or HTC... :) Thanks.

This may be a stupid question, but I've been experiencing all of the problems stated by the Gingerbread update. After 45 minutes on the phone w/verizon and a factory reset, I'm showing my software as Android Version 2.2. Now I'm wondering if I really ever did the Gingerbread update. Would doing a factory reset change the version number to the 2.2? Sounds like the Gingerbread version is 2.3, right?

You never had Gingerbread (2.3), once you flash the update unless you root your device the upgrade is permanent. A factory data reset erases your data (reverting all settings back to defaults) and downloaded apps, that is all.
