Out of the box, how much usable memory is available on the Nexus 6p?

Out of the box, how much usable memory is available on the Nexus 6p

So I know that some memory is used up on every phone when you get it because of apps already loaded. So right out of the box how much usable memory can I expect to have on the Nexus 6p?

Welcome to the forums. It is going to depend on what storage level of the device.

I am guessing that it'll be fairly close to that of the Nexus 6... so in a 32G device, you'll have around 24G free... on the 64, 56G.

On the 32 gig, that 24 gigs of available memory will be more than enough for me.. I'm running the n5 32 gig and still have 19.77 gigs available after a year and 8 months of use.. go me.. lol..

As others have mentioned, dropping 8-9 GB off the top is probably what you should expect.

Re: Out of the box, how much usable memory is available on the Nexus 6p

This was a real learning experience for me, just getting my first smartphone last year.
On my 16Gb there was only 10Gb of usable memory.
Anyone know of a thread here that can tell me which built in apps I can erase? There's a bunch of stuff I don't use.
Also, how about a "Truth in Storage Advertising" movement? You don't get 32Gb from a "32Gb" device you get 24Gb and a bunch of stuff you'd rather not have.

Well.. that isn't always entirely true.

Keep in mind something... your system stuff is in a protected partitio that is separate from the /data partition, which is where your installed apps, user data, pictures, etc are all stored. If you removed a bunch of system apps that you don't need, you only free up space in the system partition... NOT the user partition. So while the phone will report that as free space, it isn't free space that you'd actually be able to use. And no matter what you do, you won't be able to recover any of that space.... well, that is not entirely true.. you could plug it into a computer and start fussing with the parition map, but that's some hairy stuff.

Oh, the 'truth in storage advertising' thing is a hot topic.... especially over in iPhone land where a lot of them are being sold with 16G of onboard storage.

Basically a 16 GB phone has 14.9 GB, a 32 GB phone will have 29.8 GB, a 64 GB has 59.6 GB, and a 128 GB phone has 119.2 GB of total storage. A stock Marshmallow ROM takes up about 5 GB of space.

FWIW, here's a picture of my 32 GB Moto X PE after a fresh factory restore. Running stock lollipop 5.1.1 and nothing installed. Literally did a factory reset and skipped all the setup stuff to get to this screen. 21.59 GB available. I'm assuming Marshmallow will have a smaller footprint and definitely will not have some of the Moto apps built in.

Unless you just dropped out of the sky, storage has ALWAYS been reported this way since time immemorial, from spinning platter drives to flash, etc. We're in 2015, "Truth In Storage Advertising" would have to have started decades ago, not today.

As for built in apps you can erase/disable, most of those are in the system partition which is not accessible/available for storage use anyway.

I figure I'd bump this up. I probably shouldn't care too much as I have the 128 GB version of the 6P, but I'm curious why I have 111 GB of usable storage, 17 GB of storage used prior to any downloaded apps? The 5X, and even the Nexus 5, have 25-26 GB of usable storage (for the 32 GB option). What else is taking up space? For those of you that have the 32 GB or 64 GB option, are you also getting 17 GB of used storage out-of-the-box?

That 128 GB actually isn't 128 GB. The GB they use is only 1000 MB, instead of the 1024 that are actually in a GB. So when you adjust for that, you actually only have 119 GB of storage, and the 8 GB used out of the box go to the OS

Ah, that would make more sense. Thanks for the explanation!

On my 64G 6P it reports that I've used 6.7G out of 53.67G so the OS takes a little more than 8G of space. My previous two devices had 32G, the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus5, and I never came close to using all of it. I got the 64G 6P because the extra memory wasn't that much more and I wanted to say that I upgraded everything over my previous phone however as a practical matter 32G is more than enough unless you want to carry around a huge porn collection.

After installing my apps this is what was left of my 32 GB Nexus 6P.

I got mine used. I ordered 32GB graphite. But apparently, when I looked in the settings... Lol. I guess I was lucky.
