Pentile Screen Opinion/Topic

A standard that measures a quantity that isn't applicable in the real world has little value or relevance. You may well be right that VESA defines resolutions based on horizontal and vertical black and white contrast ratios, but full-color smartphone panels are not used to display horizontal and vertical black and white lines.

Pentile displays do have advantages, and many users will be completely happy with them, but their resolution claims are fake by any legitimate definition.

The resolution claims are real using the only standard, period. Color versus black and white is completely irrelevant.

Yes PenTile screens have disadvantages, especially at these pixel densities, but that has nothing to do with advertised resolution.

Talking about a valid concern using an invalid argument makes the argument lose credibility.

These displays are true qHD resolution as measured by the only standard that exists. That you don't like the way they look and find the measurement method lacking means nothing.

FWIW, I probably would be willing to buy a Pentile display at the 1280x720 resolution that Nexus Prime and HTC Vigor are reported to have. At that point the improved battery life would be worth any slight quality loss compared to a current 800x480 SAMOLED+.

Agreed, I would like to see a Pentile display at >300 PPI to see if the issues people have are minimized or eliminated.

That's because it's the same resolution on a smaller screen, nothing more.

I guess that 00.30" smaller screen REALLY makes that big of a difference....*rolls eyes*

3.5 to a 4/4.3 yes but 4.0 to 4.3........gimmie a break its not that drastic to explain it.

In my "just for fun" post today: @MDB228 twittered this morning: "My screen is Pentile to save battery life. This along with my 1900 Mah battery will keep me running long after others have died."

well depending on the PPI it definitely could make a difference to quality of picture, but I agree that going from 4.3 to 4.5 isn't anything real extreme.

Roll your eyes all you like. It's the only difference between the two screens. :)

Between the screens, maybe, but we don't know that FOR SURE. Also, there could be many tweaks to the drivers/software for the display that make the viewing experience vastly different as well.

doing some quick math it looks like the difference is 7.5% increase in pixel density, or a little less than 1 additional pixel for every millimeter. Not a huge difference, but probably some.

Now - if we could get a 720P 4.3" screen we'd be talking about a 33.3% increase in pixel density, or a little over 3 additional pixels per mm. That's a screen I'd like to take a look at!

It probably would have been worth noting that this is what I was getting at also. Your numbers match to what I got also.

Truthfully though? I'm not really that concerned. Say what you will about Moto, but for the Bionic they have my full faith and I am expecting a good product from them when it hits the market :)

Yeah, for me personally, while I can see what people are talking about with the display on the D3/X2 it really doesn't bother me that much. I'll gladly take that compromise for a phone I can actually read easily when I'm outside! I just think the issue would be virtually undetectable on a very high PPI display like 720P at 4.3 - 4.5 inches.

I dunno.. look how blocky and pixelated it looks underneath the time:

I kid.. I kid.. lol

Droid X on the left, Atrix on the right. This is acceptable?

Black text on white BG, and white text on black BG look fine.. it's colored text on any BG that you see very bad pixelation.

No use sniffs. There WILL be complaints and returns because of the screen. Its a very polarizing topic and technology.

Gosh, I purposely stroked a friends Atrix at lunch today while waiting for our order. I zoomed and went after colored fonts and just could not see anything to complain about.

Perhaps I am incapable or immune. I'll consider myself lucky I guess. I forgot to try it in the sun though.

It may be a moot point given what may release against the Bionic.

I dunno... look at that blue background on the lock screen. It's not clean... I see bits of white in it. I may have to wait for another device that has the same or better specs and display.

I'm not entirely convinced by this comparison. The pic of the Droid X is out of focus in center and right, giving it a slightly blurred (= smoother) appearance, compared to the Atrix which is all hard focus. Also they have different backgrounds and appear to have been taken at different distances -- a closer view of a grainy screen will look even grainier.

While I can't say for sure, I think the comparison exaggerates the flaws in Pentile while minimizing the TFT's.
