Picked up a 4G Signal in Los Angeles!

I live in mission hills, no signal here. I work in chatsworth and have no luck either. I've tried looking for spots in porter ranch, north hills, sylmar, Granada hills but no luck. Will try to test more south of the valley this weekend.

I'm suspecting that the Valley, especially the northwest part of it, isn't high on the priority list for Sprint. Just a gut feeling.

A quick Google search shows the realistic range of a WiMax tower is 4-5 miles, 10 is possible if you're line of sight, but doesn't sound realistic.

Pure speculation, but I picture Sprint putting towers up and down Ventura, or Victory Blvds for maximum coverage of the more crowded areas of the Valley, but that would leave the areas you're talking about uncovered with any decent signal. A tower at the Van Nuys Airport would probably get most of the north end of the Valley, but how crowded would it get? Maybe the Sprint store over across the street from the Northridge Fashion Center...?

I ordered the EVO yesterday afternoon from Sprint's website, didn't ship yesterday. I got a nice company discount on the purchase and the plan without any hassle, but I'll still be very impatient if it doesn't ship faster than I could have grabbed one from any of the places saying they'll have one in stock on Friday. LOL.

I agree with you, If sprint does put a tower in the valley it would be around Ventura blvd. I'm just hoping they put one in the valley, cause I think they might not this year and that would really suck lol.

I've got a stronger signal this week. All along 7th St. from Fig to Bixel, I'm getting 4 bars on 4G.

I am in Calabasas at the moment and no 4g here. Will be driving thru out the valley today and will leave the 4g notification on to see if I am able to grab signal anywhere.

my 4g signal was much stronger as well, i picked up 1-4 bars in the brentwood area on san vicente. as well as at my house in some areas :)

All week I only received 3g signal but today got 1-2 bars on 4G east of downtown by 5 & 60 fwy

I'm getting 3.5MB down and 0.96 up today with the EVO outside a window in the Westlake District. Inside my building I get one bar and 0.84 down and 0.11 up.

Btw if you search for Speedtest in the Android Market you will find the app. version of the Speedtest.net website.

On the 10W, leaving downtown, my 4G signal faded at USC Medical Center and kicked back to 3G. Coverage is slowly expanding weekly, it seems.

Came in to work today in downtown LA, and decided to turn on the 4G antenna just to see what would happen. Surprisingly, the Evo picked up a 4G signal. I was surprised, since 4G isn't scheduled to be rolled out in LA until later this year. Not that I'm complaining. ;)

It's fast, man. Looks like that $10 Evo tax is paying off. :)

Wonder if Sprint plans to add 4G in Ventura County

Passed by this area today and did get 1-2 bars on 4G. Came all the way from north side of valley and no 4G all of 5 south until around the 60 interchange. Thought burbank might have signal but I guess not.

No 4G signal anywhere in the Valley for me. Did a little war-driving looking for it, but didn't expect anything, so not disappointed (yet).

Loving my EVO so far, but if WiMax doesn't hit anywhere I frequent before my 30 day test drive is up, I may return the phone and opt for a Galaxy S instead next month. No sense in having a 4G phone with a $10 4G tax on it if I don't get 4G. ;-)

I was stuck in traffic on the 110 by the slauson exit and I picked up 4g signal here are the speed test

Interestingly, over in Woodland Hills, south of Ventura, I'm consistently getting 2Mbps down over 3G.

That is interesting because you'd think at Sprint's Wi-Max's frequency of 2.5GHz that's a tiny wavelength and it'd be line-of-site only. Those hills should be interrupting the signal? I am having problems with maintaining a signal inside where I get one outside.

Edit: Oh, I just re-read your post, I see you said 3G not 4G.

I am at the corner of 5th and Fig on the 21st floor with an office that faces west - I was able to get 2-3 bars of 4G all day on Thursday (the only day I have been in the office since having gotten on the Evo). I ran several speed tests and got 3.4-3.5Mbps down and 1.0-1.1Mbps upstream pretty consistently. I only tried from my office as I didn't get time to walk around at lunch - I am sure I would have gotten even better speeds on ground level but really, I don't know what benefit it would be. And here's why:

I had Fring on with my GV # forwarding to my Gizmo line (all set up within Fring). I had two calls come in essentially as VoIP calls through Fring which I took over 4G with a wired headset. One call was about 5 minutes and the other call was about 20 minutes. In both cases the caller had no idea we were talking over a VoIP connection. I have a terrible Sprint EV-DO signal in my office and can rarely speak on my cellphone for more than a few minutes without getting dropped and having to call back from my office line. Now with Fring, I won't have that problem anymore!

So at work I get a (weak) 4G signal in Santa Monica corner of Arizona and Lincoln but I only seem to get it while I'm on the balcony. Indoors no such luck..Hopefully it doesn't have weak indoor quality.

Still no hint of WiMax in the Valley (Van Nuys Airport). Not that I really expect it any time soon.

Loving my EVO so far (1 week), but no firm word on 4G in the Valley, and rumors of the Galaxy S or Pro coming to Sprint with both WiMax and Super AMOLED screen (4") are making me think might want to return the EVO and wait for 4G and a better phone to come to my neck of the woods before committing to $10 "4G tax" for two years...
