After reading a great post in the forum I setup my HTC Inspire 4G phone to teather...it works great! I followed the same steps on my fiancee's Inspire 4G and it didn't work so well. When I click the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot box in Settings > Wireless & Networks it turns on the Wi-Fi...and it is detectable by other devices...but then it immediately and automatically turns off.

We have the same phone purchased on the same day and I used the same Access Point Name settings as detailed in the excellent Android Forum thread. I even deleted and re-created the Access Point to make sure I didn't mistype anything but the same Portable Wi-Fi turns on then immediately turns off problem exists.

Any ideas what I should do?

Took me a while to figure this one out, I ran into the same thing where the hotspot would turn on for a second or 2 and then turn off. There is a setting called "fast boot" under "settings->applications". Turn that off and then try rebooting the phone. In my experience, something about the fast boot was maintaining some settings and preventing the hotspot from staying on. Hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem with my husband... I didn't find anything that said fast boot either... Any other ideas?

On your husband, you'll find his fastboot settings behind his left ear ;)

Try this,

Goto Settings/Wireless and Network Settings/WiFi Settings. Select your menu button, then Advanced. Try setting your Wifi Sleep policy to Never.

Not sure if it will help you, but worth a shot.

I don't suppose you can post the link to the forum on how to teather?

I'm having the same problems on my Galaxy Ace 2.. up until last night, it seems that it would turn off if I disconnected my laptop for a length of time, I could see that being a power saver feature, but now it's being miserable... Works after a reboot for a while

I couldn't find any of the settings mentioned. I'm wondering if my phone did an update last night and something is up with it.

Go to settings/more/mobile sharing/portable wifi hotspot den press d 3 dots to go to advance setting in advanced settings there is a power option click that and select never
Basically go to ur advanced hotspot settings and select never sleep

I am using Asus Ze550kl. And ibam facing the same problem that turned off automatically. So what is its solution?? Is it a hardware problem??? Plzzz help me. Thank you.

Just in case anyone stumbles on this thread in search of an answer to this problem. None of the solutions mentioned here were relevant in my situation. There was a simple fix, however.

There is a 'Hotspot settings' option which references 'IPV4' and 'IPV4 and IPV6'. When the setting is on 'IPV4 and IPV6', the hotspot would turn off immediately. Changing this setting to 'IPV4' only, however, fixed the problem.

It is possible this setting is being changed during automatic updates.

Thanks.... I got it in a settings
Lenovo Vibe K4 Note: Settings => Click on WLAN=> Click on 3 dots at top right corner => Advanced => "Keep WLAN on during sleep" =>Select always :)

I also had the same problem But i have fixed by changing the option setting->wifi->advanced->keep wifi during sleep->(change it from always to)never. It worked for me and keeps my hotspot on during the connection in my asus ze550kl mobile.

I had this exact same problem.

It seems that if you try to enable the hotspot, and you have a saved WiFi network in range, then it will turn off automatically.

I guess the logic behind this is "why would you want to use your mobile data when there is a friendly WiFi network in range".

Well, I'LL TELL YOU WHY. Because my home WiFi is slow as s**t and the 4G connection through my 5X is silky smooth and fast.

So, I have removed my home WiFi network from my phone and all seems to be rosy. So far

Hello. I had the same issue in Android 7 and the issue was the Google now launcher. Uninstall it and back to hot spotting.

I believe I have the answer to this issue. It is a software conflict between one of the Apps installed and the operating system.
I recently changed my service provider and when I tried to switch on Tethering - it switched on and connected to my pc but auto disconnected after about 20 seconds. The same with USB thethering.
Having spent sometime on their support chat line, they concluded that it was an issue with my handset. I knew that this was an oversimplification, because tethering had worked fine 3 months previously with a different service provider.
I deleted all the Apps that I had installed in the previous 3 months and everything now works fine. The handset manufacuter (Moto G4) recommended that I do a factory reset and not to enter a Google account so all the Apps would not automatically restore. I thought this to be too much of a ballache, but would no doubt isolate the offending App/software conflict. In my case, deleting all the recently installed Apps was the solution.

Hi this worked for me on my s5 and its very simple ... but first reset network settings/ cache and restart phone ... thats what i did ... and then simply name your hotspot something totally random above 8 letters and the same with your password random but put 10 letters+ to be safe and my hotspot would stay on ... dont know why ... may not work for everyone lol

Try this if 4G wi-fi hotspot aitomatically turns off by itself.
Switch off the hotspot
Open the back cover
Remove the battery
Adjust the sim to a slightly different position
Put battery back in and back over
Switch on the hotspot.
This should solve the issue.

Failing this, goto settings and extend the time for the hotspot to go off eg. 30 minutes.

How to fix your Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017) that can no longer connect to Wi-Fi hotspot [Troubleshooting]

Internet connectivity issues are among the most common problems we’ve received from our readers ever since we started providing support to select devices. But recently, we started receiving complaints from owners of the Samsung Galaxy A7 because according to some our readers, there units can no longer connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot they used to connect. We don’t know why this is happening but we know there were a few forced update for the device but all of them are actually minor. Those updates may have something to do with this problem so we also have to take them into consideration.

How to troubleshoot your Galaxy A7 that can no longer connect via Wi-Fi

Problem: My phone is a Galaxy A7 that I bought in January. There have been quite a few updates but nothing big actually. Recently, there was also an update and that’s when this problem started. My phone can no longer connect to a Wi-Fi network after the update and I really don’t have a clue why it’s doing this. I don’t think it has something to do with the settings since I don’t tinker my phone around. I’m afraid I can mess my phone up and have issues while using it. Can you guys help me out with this please? Thanks.

Troubleshooting: We just have to see if this problem is minor and can be fixed by basic troubleshooting because if it’s a issue with the hardware, then there’s only so much we can do about it. Here are the things you should do about this problem…

Step 1: Try connecting your phone to Wi-Fi network while in safe mode

First off, we have to know if this problem is caused by one or some of the third-party apps you installed on your phone. You have to bring the phone to boot up in Safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party elements and then try to connect it to a Wi-Fi hotspot that you used to connect.

To run your phone in safe mode, here’s what you need to do…

Turn the device off.Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.Uninstall apps that are causing a problem.

Now that your phone is already in safe mode, try to connect to see if the problem is fixed because if not, then you have to move on to the next step. However, if you can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi while in this mode, then there might be an app that’s causing the problem. You have to find that app and reset it first, if it’s not enough, then you have to uninstall it.

How to reset third-party applications on your Galaxy A7

From the Home screen, tap the Apps tray.Tap Settings > Apps.Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.Tap Storage.Tap Clear data and then tap OK.Tap Clear cache.

How to uninstall applications from your Galaxy A7

From the Home screen, tap the Apps tray.Tap Settings > Apps.Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.Tap the desired application.Tap Uninstall.Tap Uninstall again to confirm.
Step 2: Reset all Network settings

By doing this, you’re actually deleting all your network preferences and this brings the phone to its default settings. The following changes will then occur the moment you reset the network…

Stored Wi-Fi networks will be deleted.Paired Bluetooth devices will be deleted. Background data sync settings will be turned on.Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off by the customer will be reset to the default setting.Network selection mode will be set to automatic.

The following device connections status will default to when the device was being powered on for the first time.

Airplane mode: OFFBluetooth: OFFData roaming: OFFMobile hotspot: OFFVPN: OFFMobile data: ONWi-Fi: OFF

To reset network settings, follow these steps…

From the Home screen, tap the Apps tray.Tap General Management > Reset > Reset network settings.Tap Reset settings. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.

This procedure can potentially fix the problem but if it remains after doing this, then you have no other choice but to go after the firmware.

Step 3: Delete all the system caches as some of them may have been corrupted

System caches get corrupted all the time and more often they automatically become obsolete when a new firmware is installed on your phone. You’ve already done a couple of procedures that aren’t directed at the firmware to no avail so it’s time to see if this problem gets fixed by this…

Turn off the device.Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds, then ‘No command’ before showing the Android system recovery menu options).Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe cache partition”.Press Power button to select.Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.Press the Power key to restart the device.

After this and the phone is still not capable of connecting to a Wi-Fi network, it’s time to reset it.

Step 4: Backup all your files and data and reset your phone

This is your last resort and you have to do this even if there’s no guarantee the problem will be fixed. It’s because after this and the phone is still not capable of connecting to a Wi-Fi network, you will have to bring it to the shop and let the tech check it for you. To protect your privacy, you have to reset your phone so that all your personal information will be wiped out. But then again if the problem is caused by a minor firmware issue, then this procedure will take care of it.

There’s a catch though. All your personal files and data that are stored in your phone’s internal storage will be deleted so make sure you make a backup before you actually reset the phone. After the backup, I suggest you also disable the Factory Reset Protection so you won’t be locked out of your device after reset especially if you don’t know your Google ID and password. The steps on how to do this as well as how to reset your phone can be found below.

How to disable Factory Reset Protection on Galaxy A7

From the Home screen, tap the Apps tray.Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts.Tap Accounts.Tap Google.Tap on your Google ID email address if multiple accounts are setup. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.Tap 3 dot icon.Tap Remove account.Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.

How to reset your Galaxy A7

Turn off the device.Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds, then ‘No command’ before showing the Android system recovery menu options).Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.Press Power button to select.Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.Press Power button to select and start the master reset. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.Press the Power key to restart the device.

You can also reset your phone from the Settings menu…

From the Home screen, tap the Apps tray.Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts.Tap Backup and restore. If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.Tap the back button to the Settings menu and tap General Management > Reset > Factory data reset.Tap Reset. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your credentials.Tap Continue.Tap Delete all.

If the problem continues after doing all these procedures, then seek further assistance from a tech.
