Possible new Droid Charge launch date - 5/3/2011

Looks like they won't feel the affects of poor leadership or decision-making.

That's the problem, its like they realized that, and decided to take advantage of it. VZW used to be one of the best in terms of policies and customer service, now it seems that is changing. They still have the best network, and now LTE, so they'll still get more subscribers. Its like back when ATT first got the iPhone, and they turned "to the dark side" so to speak, because they knew they could get away with it. The iPhone doesn't seem to be as big of a deal anymore, and now VZW has it too. But it seems 4G is the real draw, its almost like LTE is the new iPhone and VZW realizes they can do as they please now since they are the exclusive carrier.

Unfortunately, people like us are likely going to be some of the only ones that recognize and are bothered by these issues. But we're also the least likely to be willing to pass on LTE. Rock and a hard place, I tell ya.

I was just in Costco. The salesperson said he had three in stock and they would go on sale tomorrow.

I know this not very reliable, but I just asked a VZW rep on the phone if they happened to have a functional charge model on the floor (which, of course, they did not) and she mentioned that the device WAS intended to release today but (once again) VZW decided to delay the phone last minute, and the new release date is May 20. She said this is not official but it is what she's been informed off. She said if it's not that date it's almost certainly going to be the end of May. I really hope she's wrong; I was waiting for the bionic, now waiting for this device. It really is starting to feel like they're intentionally driving their customers away with all the nonsense they've been pulling lately. If this device comes out with their tiered data plan that will be the last straw for me.

May 20 thats just insane, i really hope thats not true. A month late on a release is nonsense

All these rumors is making me weak.
If the 20th is true, that is sad.
It was "officially" supposed to release on the 28th Apr. Then bam no release.
If vzw was just forthcoming and just say whats going on, if was 4g outage or some other reason, I would feel OK.
But having to rely on rumors, just leaves a bad taste.
Slowly turning into a TBolt release fiasco.

Hows this for a conspiracy theory:

They do all this delay stuff on purpose. It gets people all fired up with pent up rage and when finally does release, they just drop everything and cause a massive sales rush.
They probably lose a bit of sales, but what else do ppl buy at the time of the drop.
So they wait.

Kinda worked with the TB.

I see how an intentional delay would cause more sales in the few days right around its release than the few days around the planned launch, but if you look at a several week period, you get far more sales if the phone is available to buy throughout that period, as opposed to launching at the very end. So net sales for the month are equal at best. Except they're not equal, because this is driving customers away, plain and simple.

I simply can't remember a time when there's been this many new, powerful Android devices being announced or rumored in such short order, each with stellar new features, and they're going to the three other US carriers. Meanwhile VZW can't manage to launch their outdated phones with last years hardware on time. I understand that the network is most important, and I have to say I would rather have the fastest, strongest network than the coolest phone, but many people wouldn't. If LTE isn't important to them, or they just really like cool phones and could care less, they'll go elsewhere.

Its not like the Charge is a better device than the best of what carriers have to offer, its not really even competitive against other carrier's flagships. The only real reason to wait for a Charge is for the LTE, and that only does it for certain people in certain areas. Very soon now, every other carrier will have at least one dual-core phone with a great display and a good design. Every day that wait will make people give up on them and switch to another carrier. How many Charges do you think they will sell once ATT or TMo starts selling the GS2 for $100 cheaper?

I see no marketing advantage for the delay. If I were in VZW's marketing dept., I would have pushed hard to have this device out more than a month ago, and be hounding Moto to finish the Bionic revision before all my devices are completely outclassed (which will happen by mid-summer if VZW doesn't have a Bionic by then). Honestly, if I wasn't lucky enough to have LTE in my area, I'd have given up and buy an Evo 3D from Sprint the day it comes out.

It could be there is a major problem with the 4G network and to fix it they need to add new hardware and/or software. If this is the case it may be a long time before the Charge is released. See the link below. I do not claim to understand what is being said. My interpretation is they put a band aid in place to fix the 4G outage and now more work needs to be done to ensure another outage does not occur.

.

the same amount they would if those other carriers werent around because it costs more to get out of a VZW contract than it would be just to stick with it and get a more expensive charge

I hope this comes out thursday, I want a new phone but I'm not gonna wait any longer...

IF, they were pulling the phone back due to hardware issues they would not be sitting in retail store stock rooms, and yes I confirmed that my local stores have their stock. It could be a 4G LTE issue, it could be something else, hell it could be this stupid promotion they are running.

The bottom line is they released the ThunderBolt (which I did have and had excellent weight and form factor to it) and they are now rolling out firmware updates for it little over a month later.

The Samsung Charge I played with tonight at my Verizon store was fully functional demo unit working just fine and connected.

The clock is ticking on my 14 day window to return my TB (ends on Friday). What is the policy if I return the TB, get another phone and continue to wait? Do I have another 14 days after that?

wasnt it only 1 exchange, maybe just go in there tell them you want to return it and get the droid charge, maybe they will let you put it on hold and let you use the TB as a loaner phone till its available. its worth asking

Excellent point, I forgot about the "one exchange" policy. If I had another VZW phone, I could just fall back into that one, and use my upgrade later, but the TB is all I have.

You could always return it, Cancel the upgrade fall back to your original plan. This should still allow you to upgrade 1 more time. Go to best buy and pay a little more for the phone but they will give you a 30 day return policy, but after the 14th day you can't cancel your contract but you can exchange your phone up until the 30th day. Hope this helps. May want to confirm it with them first. This is the info my local BB gave me.

I was told by a Verizion Rep that they only launch phones on Thursdays. Not sure if that is true so here is hoping for this Thursday

Why, pray tell, are you getting rid of your TB?

you mean besides
  • poor battery life
  • brick weight
  • jump through hoops to root
  • dull screen
  • random reboots
  • notification bugs
  • sms bugs
  • designed for leftys
  • poor speaker phone

Some people just have different taste ya know
