Problem with Audio using non-HDMI Yamaha AV Receiver

Not sure that is 100% accurate...

I have a sharp lcd and have the Chromecast in hdmi port 1. I have an optical audio cable connected to my 10 year old yamaha 5.1 receiver.

I ran house of cards off of netflix casted through my galaxy note 10.1. I get audio but it is definitely just 2 channel.

I went into the smart central of my television and pulled up the exact same episode of house of cards and all of a sudden my yamaha popped over to digital audio 5.1.

I know my yamaha is too old for DD+ but yet the tv and yamaha talked perfectly and gave me 5.1, but the chromecast, tv and receiver doesn't play nicely.

I am thinking it is a chromecast issue. :/

It isn't a Chromecast issue but a issue with your TV not supporting Dolby Digital Plus. The Chromecast passes DD+ and if your TV can't decode that it can't down convert the stream to the older DD5.1 standard. DD+ can't be passed through coax or optical.

yes, I have an older Yamaha here myself so I get it when you say that you really like it. I love it but no HDMI. I have used an optical cable in the past, that worked with other devices, but not the Chromecast, however, I think that my optical cable went bad on me due to the fact that I dont see anything light up when I put the cable close to the port. Would have already replaced it but then the directv receiver was replaced with a newer version and it has not optical port. Always something. I bought a digital audio cable and ran it from directv rec. to the yamaha amp. I also have a Toshiba sound bar from the tv and have tv speakers turned off. At one time I had finally gotten the chromecast sound to play both thru the sound bar and the yamaha receiver.. My yamaha has surround sound system hooked up. Then I messed up and wanted to move the sound bar closer to the tv and undid some things and now I can no longer get chromecast audio except thru the tv but am doing some research and will post again if I find the article that showed me how to do it. I know that you have to change some settings on the yamaha under the options menu. My tv only has one hdmi port and the chromecast is in there. I am using componet cables from polaroid tv to directv receiver and a digital audio cable from the directv to the yamaha amp. Only one thing I remember about the time I got chromecast to play thru amp was when i was changing input settings is that it came on while I had the amp set to CD input. If you go to chromecast 101, there is not a lot of help there, but I stumbled upon the forum where I found something useful as far as the sound bar goes anyway. It said you can put the dhromecast into the hdmi port on the sound bar but method did not work for me but again there are a lot of settings on the sound bar just like on the amp and everything has to be right. Will post again when I get some help Oh,mine is Yamaha HTR 5830., quite old but was ahead of its time back then, it even has componet ports when tv's only had composite The manual was available for download at Yamaha.com Good luck to both of us I know that it can be done because I did it once, kickin myself for changing things when I got the sound bar.
