Hi there,

If you haven't figured out this issue yet for your Note 5 - you'll need to Disable the THREE Gear VR apps from Samsung. I also began having issues with my factory charger that came with my new phone, which glitched the phone and began the prob with Gear VR. I also disabled Samsung Push app. so they CANNOT push new apps into my phone. Seems to work for now!

Let me know :P

I have had the same problem except it has compounded. I am unable to charge my phone and its dead. It all started with the VR push from Samsung. I completed a hard factory wipe back to default and the issue still exists. The usb port doesn't recognize a charge. Wireless charging does work but I really don't want to pay $60 for a temp charge. At this point, you have any ideas on how to correct this issue?

After several weeks of research and at least 5 Factory Resets I have discovered a common theme in my problems and almost all posts about problems with "Gear VR Launching." In a great many posts, users also experience charging issues of one type or another. I always use my wireless charger so I did not detect this issue but mine reports lots of charger port issues. This has lead me to the following conclusion: "Gear VR autoloading and launching is the effect not the cause of the problem. The problem is a defective USB/CHARGING PORT."
Other uses have stated they are amazed because they did not get the Gear VR software until the attached their VR hardware!!! Just based on that and having the knowledge that Gear VR should not be on your phone if you do not attach VR hardware points to the hardware cause and the software is a sode effect.
My Note 5 reports incompatible chargers and problems with Power Sharing without the power sharing software - with no cable ever plugged in. It beeps and give the black screen with the little white x at the bottom, like a device was just attached (I think this is the VR software trying to ID the new device). The common element in all of these things is the USB/Charger port. I think the USB port reports something to the system that causes Android to load the VR software. Now that seems to exacerbate the problem and cause an order of magnitude more errors, but the problem is still there - occasionally. My problem is a factory reset masks the problem for 12 to 48 hours when it "triggers" and goes bananas. Samsung Warranty support, as crappy as it is :'(, will just do a factory reset and say "it's fine, it was a software problem."
I have noticed, and need to verify, my problems occur when I am in a hot environment. Working in my home office with A/C appears to be stable. When I go to hotter places and work for a while, the problems popup and Gear VR tries to load. Again, high temp problems are quite indicative of hardware issues.
Anyone who thinks they have this issue in hot places, not cool/cold places, please let me know.

I have the exact same issue. The factory reset didn't solve it.
Currently it has happened to me during winter times when there's snow, but it was also indoors. Not anywhere near furnace however.

I have a Note 5 and am having similar issues, the black screen with the little white x's then a VR gear setup screen shows up, sometimes it takes over my phone for several minutes where I cannot do anything but give it time, I cannot access the home screen nor the power button is responsive, I've done the factory reset and it does not work, I have discovered that when I plug in my pocket juice portable charger into the USB and is connected to the charging device it stops the glitch and so my theory is that it is a faulty USB charging port on the Note 5, which possibly causes the VR Setup Wizard glitch because it's sensing that something is being connected or disconnected, when in actuality nothing is connected, when my charging device is connected via USB it does not not trigger the gear VR setup, and phone works normally.

I have also noticed poor battery life, it doesn't hold a charge very long.

I'll probably end up taking it back to T-Mobile and switching it out for a new device since I have the jump on demand plan.

This is also a refurbished phone that was sent directly from Assuranthe Solutions in replacement of another damaged phone.

Hopefully my new phone will not have the same issues or this one will correct itself overtime, not likely.

Woohoo, had the blank screen. Sidesync connected but still had a blank virtual screen so I knew the phone was working. Tried cache wipe and was about to do a data/wipe restore. Until I read this forum and VR use was the last thing I was doing when the battery died.

I stuck it back into the Gear VR two times, maybe three and expecting to hear not see the stupid "remove the device and unlock it" instead the screen was back!!!

Got stuck in VR - VR Gear unstuck it. Down time was two hours of forced resets and panic.

I am on my third white 32g note 5, tomorrow I make my final $25 payment to TMO for a $700 handset they have replaced twice.

All 3 have had the issue with the Gear VR, phantom charging, not charging by usb , and battery drainage. I was sure that the usb port was faulty and caused the problem, this phone has lasted me the longest because I use the wireless charging pad after my second phone usb became useless and I needed it to charge to transfer info.
Now I own a car with Android auto so I have been using the usb port again, voila... Now I'm having the VR and charging problems again....

This is not rare (I am 3 for 3) and Samsung is aware, so is your provider, and there needs to be a recourse.

I am having exact same issues with my note 5. Can I delete or disable the VR? Do I need it for my phone to function? This might just make me switch back to I-phone.

I had bought an used AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 5 from somebody on Swappa and had the phone for 2 months with no issues until now back on March 6 2019 my phone was acting bananas and the screen went black and into both auto mode and had loaded the Gear VR all by it's self and drained my battery totally out so i put my phone on my brand new wall charger to charge and it charged fine all up to the 99% but when i took it off the charger it's said 97% on the phone screen and after that i did reset my phone and got stuck into that AT&T setup & transfer so i ended up calling AT&T customer service and told the person what my phone did to see if there was anything else that i could try and now 4 days later my phone is back to having the same issue with the screen going black with it going into both auto mode and the Gear VR loading and the battery draining out.
