Project Fi

This is becoming more interesting to me, as there seem to be areas around here where Sprint is the only one that works.

That came as a bit of a surprise.

I have been using Project Fi for over a year now. I just returned from a Caribbean cruise and I'm happy to say that my Pixel 2 XL had service in every port.

Good to hear. I'm headed out with RCCL to Port Canaveral, Nassau and Coco Cay in April.

Did you try using it with the on-board cell site (did your ship HAVE it)?

The ship did not offer on-board cell. It did have WiFi, which was inadequate and overpriced.

I am thinking about signing up for Fi. I watched the videos about it on the Fi site and have a question. The videos say that you use hangouts for talk and text. I have hangouts but me and my family(iphone and Android) use Allo for texts or Google Message. Will Project FI work with these applications too?

All the apps work with Fi. In fact if you have a sim card and an unlocked phone Fi works on those phones as well but think you are stuck on Twinkle. Currently test driving a Note 8 on Fi.

Thanks. So I don't have to use Hangouts. I have a Nexus 6p on AT&T prepaid, next phone will be Pixel, but I want to try this on my 6P. What is Twinkle ?

Have no idea, I think spell check got me there, I was trying to type TMobile

lol. The Fi site says it chooses between TMobile, Sprint or Consumer Cellular, but maybe it only does that if it has to? How is speed and coverage on TMobile where you live?

Fi does that on Fi approved phones (like the Pixel/Pixel2/ etc.) --- He meant you get stuck on T-Mobile if you use Fi on a "non-approved" Fi phone (such as the Note 8).

I hate to seem dense, but what would be the point of using Fi on a non-approved phone?

My guess would be people just wanting to use another phone besides a Google one (such as they like the Note 8). It does pretty much defeat the purpose of Fi (auto WiFi connecting, swapping networks, etc.)

Where you would use Hangouts is if you want to be able to message people from other devices. I use Hangouts and can send and receive texts from ANY device signed in to my account, provided it has and internet connection.

As noted by others, other texting apps will work but you lose that cross-device capability.

If you want $20 off your first bill (and to help out a fellow member) PM me and I'll get you my referral code. If you use the code, you need to stay with the service for 30 days before the person that refers you gets their credit.

I use Google's Messages app on my Pixel 2 XL as does my husband on his Nexus 5X. You can use Messages, Allo, Hangouts, etc., it's up to you. Basically, you can pretty much use whatever you prefer.

have you tried Bluemail? I cant handle threaded emails which is what conversation mode in the gmail app provide and cannot be disabled

Thanks to everyone that has replied to my question. I guess I'll give Fi a try, although I'm not sure how good TMobile is. I checked the coverage map and it seems that coverage is all around me so that's good.

make sure you get a code and save 20 dollars. Fi has been great. The question about why would you use Fi on a non Fi phone is simple. I wanted to try out a Note 8. It basically acts like a TMobile sim chip so I was able to test drive the note 8 without leaving Fi. I much prefer my 2 XL so I am back on Fi on an approved phone.

I am seriously thinking about Fi, but I know of one absolute dead spot for T-Mobile, and I have no way of really knowing (coverage maps to the contrary) if Sprint covers it. US Cellular is not in CT as far as I know, so it is either Sprint or a dead spot.
