Question about renting. If G-Nex is web only, am I screwed?

If I "rent" a Rezound with the plan to do the $35 exchange when G-Nex comes out, will I still be able to do the exchange if G-Nex ends up being a web only sale? If so, how would the exchange work if I couldn't just walk into a store and swap phones?

You might be messed up in that situation but here is my main concern about "renting". What if the nexus you get has an issue and you need to get a new one under the 14 day swap? You have already used it up getting the nexus from renting so you are screwed and hope no one already returned it and they put it into the refurb pile. Meaning if others have already returned the phone it automatically goes into the refurb group for replacement under warranty and you now have a nice new and used nexus when you have already waited so long

I had the same idea about 'renting' a Rezound today and here is some additional information to consider. The sales rep told me that they have been informed the restocking fee for the Rezound is $135 ($100 more than normal) due to the inclusion of the Beats headphones. So basically if you decide to return the Rezound you are returning the phone only and you have bought a $100 pair of unreturnable earbuds. If you are planning on 'renting' go with a Razr.

I would take issue with the idea that 'renting' is immoral. It is within the terms of your contract to be able to return the phone and if we as consumers are bound to the terms of our contracts, so are they. If they wanted to change the contract terms for new customers they easily could.

Pretty sure that the policy with exchanging a phone for the exact same model is a wholly different policy from the one where you exchange for a different phone w/ a restocking fee.

Great point, you just saved me $100.

That doesn't really make sense though because they use the phones as replacements which would not come with head phones anyway. Maybe your rep just did not know because I talked to verizon and they mentioned nothing off this extra $100, because I was thinking about renting but still waiting.

That's news to me. I'm not sure what to make of that cuz that wasn't the case on Sat. night when I went in to pick one up. Was this in a corporate store? For better or worse, they had none remaining in stock. I guess that's gotta be a direct result of brainiacs walking thru the doors blatantly informing reps. of their "rental" plans. Verizon does something to our benefit, pinheads ruin the fun.

The "renting" is a bad idea whether it is spoken of openly or not. It is because of actions like that we no longer have a 30 day return window. Folks who are doing this are abusing the system.

Do folks really want to give them an excuse to lower the window even more?

You were lied to. I got a rezound, and the restocking fee is only $35. Period. Any change like that they are required to print on the receipt and inform their customers at purchase. If they don't, they can't charge me for it.

Charging users $299 with a 2yr contract for a "stock android" phone that has RF crosstalk problems and VZW bloatware is a bad idea. VZW most assuredly appreciates your honesty but it doesn't stop them from practices that are good for them and bad for the consumer. Also, the 30 day return window was decreased to help maximize the effects from the secrecy of Iphone releases. There is a reason that Iphone releases are always a huge surprise, they want people buying the older version right up till release day.

Sorry but I disagree with those who believe 'renting' is wrong. By extending the return policy, they are allowing users to get a better feel for the device. If you dont like the device, you can return it. I 'rented' the razr to see if it is everything Verizon said it would be and also because I wanted to get their special for the 4gb internet plan. When the nexus comes out, I will go into a verizon store (if it is available) and play with the nexus. If I like it, the razr will be returned. Im sure Verizon thought this through and I believe these actions are perfectly moral. Does not make sense to spend 300 bucks for a phone you can only operate for 14 days and be stuck with it for 2 years if it fudges up on the 15th day. IMO, this gives the customers more time to make their decision.

Though I'd love to think that "renting" is a way to stick it to Verizon, I'm not sure that's what it's doing. Does anyone know any details about VZW's inventory arrangement with phone manufacturers? Is it like video games, where Gamestop will buy a bunch of product assuming they'll sell it, or are they actually selling these things on consignment? And when a defective phone is returned, or doesn't sell, or exchanged because the customer didn't like it, does the phone get sent back to the manufacturer (like book/magazine inventory), or does VZW eat the loss?

I wouldn't be surprised if "renting" was a victimless crime, or if the victim was actually the phone manufacturer.

I just returned my Razr tonight and was charged a $35 restocking fee.

My question is, after my account resets in about 24-48 hrs I will be eligible for an upgrade again. Can I pickup a Rezound when my account resets and still be able to return (another $35 restocking fee) and exchange for the Nexus?

Verizon buys inventory in bulk, especially for launches, and eats the cost for refurbs/returns. They use an external vendor (PCD) for all of their refurbished devices.

I'm not so sure. It's entirely possible. It was not a corporate Verizon store but it was a Verizon branded store. My sales rep was the manager of the store and explained to me that they can't use headphones once they've been purchased. He further stated that he received an email from Verizon corporate that the restocking fee was to be $135, specifically because of the included earbuds.

Sounds like a scam. Or you are just trolling.

I think in the contract it says that you're only entitled to one replacement/restock. In order to return it again I think you'd have to cancel the contract completely, which might cost you your current phone number and a new activation fee. I could be wrong though.

Actually, (not trying to sound confrontational) they can do whatever they want. They do not have to print it on the receipt. They do not have to inform you about it. As long as the information is available somewhere in writing, they are good to go. Nobody is going to hire a lawyer and attempt to sue over a hundred bucks. So without court intervention, they are allowed to screw you any way they want to. They can even deny the return or refuse to allow you to even enter the store.

Always remember things like this when trying to "play the system" in a retail store. Many store managers make a point to track people they think are doing this. And often times, they will deny the return.
