Randomly Shutting itself off

Not even slightly confused...

Sorry you have a defective device you're unwilling to request a replacement for...

Since then software isn't fixed (or the hardware manufacturing problem isn't addressed), I risk having the same problem again. Now thanks to my thread, Google is aware and addressing the issue. Once fixed, I'll order a new device if necessary.

I had my phone randomly reset while it was on my kitchen table today. Not sure why it did.

I wonder if it is a Google Play Services update that is doing it, I noticed mine restart on it's own a week or so ago and on Saturday it appeared to power itself off. I had not noticed such behavior before. I meant to do a logcat overnight to see if it is restarting while I sleep, but keep forgetting to bring my computer into my bedroom.

No. Happened to many, me included, before that update.

You just went over my helmet.

A Kernel Panic in Linux based OS's (Like MacOS and Android) is the equivalent to the Blue Screen of Death in Windows.
Usually MacOS and Windows will auto reboot after one occurs, not sure if Android does (not finding anything that says it will). Usually invalid calls to memory, or unhandled fatal exceptions cause them.

If its a unit defect, and others are having the same issue, it would be happening more frequently than just at random. Which is why I believe it is still, until proven otherwise a os malfunction, which could be the reason why 5.0.1 was delayed another few days after the initial roll out started.

Mine randomly rebooted yesterday. Just sitting on a table. I have the latest version, 5.01.

Mine rebooted again when I tried bringing my phone out of airplane mode this morning. Based on the runtime of some of the processes it appears it also restarted itself at like 10pm last night.

Have you posted on my definitive thread on the subject in Google Product forums?

Has anyone tried doing a factory data reset to see if that cured the problem for them?

That's not very helpful. Not everyone has been following the issue as closely as you or others.

To answer bkircher's question, people have tried that and unfortunately it seemingly had no effect.

On another note for me, it appears the reboots and shutdowns have stopped (60+ hours going on now). Not sure what's changed now, outside of uninstalling the Amazon app and a few app updates. Pretty sure it is an uncanny coincidence as I know people have gone days without issues only for it to come back up again.

I disagree. A read of this thread would indicate that it's not an issue to be solved by a factory reset.

I too have noticed that the reboots have stopped. Perhaps the odd pullback and and later release of 5.0.1 means they fixed it in the update. Odd they didn't mention it in the change log.

My phone just turned itself off for the first time since I got it over a week ago. Of course I have a replacement coming for unrelated screen issues.

I don't have 5.0.1 on my phone (yet). And I seems to not have had any reboot since yesterdays (so far, fingers crossed).

Sadly, no. I did star the group though, following to see if they announce anything. Everytime I have had reboots so far I have not been near a computer that I can logcat from...

Sigh spoke too soon. My phone restarted again when toggling airplane mode.
