Rezound vs Galaxy Nexus

I don't know how many times we have to go over this: the rezound does not show LTE signal strength ANYWHERE on the phone. The ONLY phone that does this is the Nexus. What you're seeing is either 3G or 1x, both of which will be much better than LTE.

Don't believe the GN was first to feature the capabity. I believe the LG Revolution was the first device on Verizon to feature seperate indicators for both voice and data strengths. I may be wrong but I believe I read this fact awhile back. Either way, I wish this was a standard feature in all future LTE devices on Big Red in the future. I won't waste a penny in a wishing well on it, but hey, a guy can dream can't he.

Where did I say I was comparing LTE to 3G? Both phones on CDMA mode only for comparing signal strength db.

When I did LTE comparisons, I didn't look at the db, I used the speettest app. Gnex would cause it to say no connection and would never even allow it to start...hence because the phone wasn't locked onto the LTE signal. The Rezound would find the server and then do the up/down test.

All this "poor build quality" BS about Samsung always makes me laugh. People like to complain about the plastic, but most phones out there are plastic, including most HTC phones. For all the people that talk about Samsung's "poor build quality" I don't think I've ever seen one of the complaintants having a Samsung phone. I'll happily take my "cheap, plastic, poor build quality" Nexus S that has never had a single problem and is completely solids, over my "high build quality" PLASTIC EVO4G that had a lifting screen, self cracking PLASTIC bezel, and brick like shape and feel.

Plastic does not equal poor build quality, or even a cheap feel for most. The only people that complain about cheap feel are, again, people looking for something to complain about.

So true. I've had a Fascinate, a Charge & now a Nexus. The build quality on all 3 is nothing short of excellent. I love how people equate light weight design & components as "cheap".

I can sympathize with your frustration about having your phone down talked because of its physical characteristics. I owned the Inc and prior to its release reviewers took shots at it for being light weight, but it was an incredible phone. However, the difference is there were no displays of the Inc falling apart on the shelf. It too had radio issues and charging issues. Like GN owners we hoped for an update to fix these issues, and while things did improve the issues were never totally resolved. Can GN owners expect that some super update will appear and make their phones all better? Survey says don't get your hopes up. Maybe it'll fix the screen issues too.

Get over the display thing already. Seriously. Its the most idiotic reason I've ever seen to put down a phone that you wouldn't like anyways.

But the EVO had a plethora of screen issues in their initial 3 production runs. It happens to all manufacturers.

So he didn't like it. Big deal.

It's not that he didn't like it, it's that he posts the same idiotic story in every thread based around the fact that verizon had to improvise with their displays since they were never built for a phone like the nexus.

Personally, I don't even pay attention to store demos. I worked at Best Buy right outta college and I know what kind of abuse the floor model of anything goes through. Usually just reading the initial impressions from people who have demo units or knowing a manufacturer's history will give you enough to go off of.

I thought my Nexus was built very solid. Loved the position of the sleep/wake button. The casing seemed just as sturdy as anything else except for maybe my old Droid X.

Wow I'm almost offered. I was just saying that the reviewers were wrong about one phone based on feel but if there had been displays of it that were falling apart it would have fuled the fire, increasing the slander, to put it more plainly. Just keeping it simple since my views are idiotic. I also tried to sympathise with their radio issues, in an ironic way that I guess was taken as low brow. The screen thing was... OK that was a jab. I guess you get sensitive when every third or fourth post is someone leaving for the rival phone. I mean really this is the Rezound branch of the forum if GN posters want sympathy and support I think they're in the wrong place.

Well, in response to that I should tell you that I'm probably exchanging my nexus for a rezound tomorrow. I don't think a lot of the criticism leveled against the nexus is fair, but I'm also more than willing to acknowledge the nexus' faults.

Which is fair.

Not really aware of its faults. I've heard of signal issues, but that's all. Most other comments were simply "my phone is better than your phone" babblery.

The signal issues are a show stopping fault if you are having them. If you are not then I would have been more than pleased to keep the Nexus, knowing that any phone you buy is not going to be 100% perfect for you (e.g., loss of screen real estate in Nexus stock mode...I didn't care for that but there are work arounds). If you are one of the lucky ones without the show stopper, sit back and enjoy. And happy Romming.

I think most of it is fair actually.

I originally wanted to buy the Galaxy nexus. That was going to be my next phone. I was looking forward to it. But it seemed like Samsung was going out of its way to ruin it. I wanted a Galaxy S2 with a high res Super AMOLED Display. What I got was an inferior Super AMOLED display (pentile), the SD card stripped from it, and the hardware NAV buttons stripped from it. The Nexus phones are supposed to showcase Android, but the GN hardly does that. Nexus phones should be the best you can get at their time of release, and the GN is NOT that. This is nothing like the Nexus 1 was (which, ironically, was an HTC product).

I'm not happy with Samsung for peeing on my parade. If the Razr had been my only other option, I would be very annoyed right now. Fortunately, HTC produced the product that samsung would not. Samsung totally deserves the vitriol being poured on them right now. They had a great product with the Galaxy S2 and managed to ruin it.

Just to respond tto some of your points. As far as I know, all AMOLED screens are pentile. There has just been a lot of bad press about it lately because of the horrible Motorola screens. The decisions on no SD card, and no hardware buttons falls on Google. They tell the manufacturer what they want, the manufacturer builds it. To expect an SD card was probably unreasonable since the NS did not have one and Google is all about the cloud. Personally I don't see the big deal. You also say that the Nexus is supposed to showcase Android, yet don't like the lack of hardware buttons. The GN is showcasing a new feature of Android that will most likely become pretty common...on-screen buttons.

Hopefully what comes out of all this is Google not using Samsung for a Nexus phone again unless they make major quality improvements. Things like no longer building the phones out of plastic, using the RGB stripe version of Super AMOLED instead of the pentile one and so forth.

Nope. The Razr's is, but all the Galaxy S2s are RGB I believe.

Wiki Says
Super AMOLED Plus, first introduced with the Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Droid Charge smartphones, is a further development where the PenTile RGBG pixel matrix (2 subpixels) is replaced with Samsung's "Real Stripe" (3 subpixels) RGB RGB subpixel arrangement. Which goes from eight to twelve subpixels per group, resulting in finer details. The screen technology is also brighter, thinner and 18% more energy efficient. Yeah, there is a difference. IMO, the difference is not as big as I thought it would be (The GN screen still looks good), but it is there.

It was a really bad decision whoever made it. It was the main reason I passed on the GN.

Personally I don't see the big deal.
If I was ok with such limitations I would just go buy an iPhone. Why would NOT having expandability options be a good thing? That makes no sense.

And if that really is Google's new position, I doubt I will be looking forward to the next nexus device either.

You also say that the Nexus is supposed to showcase Android, yet don't like the lack of hardware buttons. The GN is showcasing a new feature of Android that will most likely become pretty common...on-screen buttons.
LOL! This "feature" adds nothing to the phone and takes away from screen real estate! The only benefit at all is that it looks a little cooler because you can animate them (and yeah, it does look cool).

I used a GN at a verizon store, and it was irritating to have these buttons disappear in the middle of screen transitions. Hardware buttons never disappear.

Just to add my two cents into this whole convo... I honestly think that the Rezound and the Nexus (and the RAZR) are 3 of the BEST smartphones, PERIOD, in the US right now. ALL have their pluses, and ALL have their minuses. This my phone is better than your phone stuff gets pretty petty sometimes. (Although it is humorous to see that some folks refuse to acknowledge issues with their device.) That being said, there are a few things that would turn me off of the Nexus, 2 of them being SERIOUS dealbreakers, and 1 thing that ultimately made me go with the Rezound.

Dealbreaker #1 - The Nexus signal issue. Although some don't have it, I live in a 4g deep area, Augusta, GA, but I spend A LOT of time in the sticks, McCormick, SC, where Verizon is the ONLY carrier with sustantial coverage, and it seems that most people have a true issue where it is marginal service to begin with.

Dealbreaker #2 - It's made by Samsung. I understand why most new generation phones are made of plastic. I used to work for T-Mobile, and did product testing. The first version of the Sensation we tried set paper on fire. Dual-core phones get VERY hot... LTE chips get VERY hot... You add that together, and there is the possibility of these things becoming liability issues, you have to use different materials. However, hold a Nexus in hand, and a Rezound in hand, you can deny all you want, but the Rezound feels like a BETTER quality device. That being said, after having a Tmo Vibrant, Fascinate & Charge, I can HONESTLY and UNEQUIVOCALLY say, I WILL NEVER EVER EVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG SMARTPHONE AGAIN!

I could care less about the sd card or the lack thereof (I use Google Music, Amazon & Box).
I think NFC is currently a gimmick. (at least for the next year in the US) Besides, it'll be in SD cards soon, so that's a moot point.
Your screen is better than my screen, WHO CARES?! They're both FANTASTIC screens, I personally don't care for AMOLED screens of any variety.

A few months ago, I was torn between the Rezound and the Nexus, and was dead set on the Nexus and giving Samsung another try, until Amazon came through with their penny sale. Who could resist the allure of a device with the specs of the Rezound for just a penny (well plus the cost of service, etc.) Had the Nexus come out back then, I probably would have had a Nexus, and have angrily returned it and kicked myself for being fooled by Samsung again and then gotten the Rezound.

However (and if you've followed me this far, congrats! If we ever meet in person I'll buy you a drink) at the end of the day, Verizon has somehow managed to go from Android underdog to the Android POWERHOUSE. All 3, the RAZR, Rezound & Galaxy Nexusare EXCELLENT phones, have a demographic, and different people will like each one. I personally am in LOVE :-* with my Rezound, and can honestly see myself using this phone for the next 2 years. I just don't know where cell phone tech can go from here....
