I was only trying to show that the notification and ringtone volumes being tied together is not because of Google and is not inherent since Android 4.0.
This was a problem for me after switching to the DNA from the Razr. I need to have my phone ring for a call while I'm sleeping but I do not want to be bothered by notifications from emails and texts. With the Razr this was not a problem as I could easily just turn down the notification volume. This isn't possible with the DNA and going into each individual app and turning off notifications every time I go to bed is not convenient at all.
The solution I came up with was to put a 1 second duration silent mp3 file on my phone. Then I used the built in Sound Set feature to create a Sound Set and used the silent mp3 file as the notification tone for everything that I don't want to be botherd by. Now it's just a matter of changing to my "sleep" sound set when I go to bed.
Hope this is helpful to anyone else who may have a similar situation.
