Ripping movies...

The error was "Cannot create play command." After doing some searching this is a bug when the play mode is not set from the menu. You need to set it to either http (audio) or rtsp (video). I also had to open up another port in my windows firewall as VLC S&C had notified me it couldn't open that port. After that it worked! AS far as I can tell this is the only method that will allow you to stream movies from your PC to your Xoom. I hope they port XBMC to honeycomb soon!

I just tryed a digital copy form one of my DVDs and iTunes flv one worked fine. Nit has high quality as I would have liked but it plays. So any DVD you mite have laying around with a digital copy on it u can just move it over.

Dvd Catalyst 4 actually has a Xoom preset. You gotta mess around with some of the global settings if u want it to be full screen but it works nice.

haha. I just used handbrake for the first time and randomly messed with some settings and ripped LOTR Fellowship and it was 12.8gb....that obviously isn't going to work. I will try again with the settings on the previous page and hope it works:)

I found it!
Using the following handbrake setting, you will get files that will play perfectly on your xoom. OK guys, so here it is:

Start off with selecting the 'iPod Legacy' profile.
Then go into 'Picture Settings' and change the width and height to 1280x720
(If you want to achieve better quality and have a 1080p source, you can set it to 1920x1080)
Make sure that under 'Video' the code is set to h264, frame rate same as source and average bit rate 2200
Next up in 'Audio' select a samplerate of 48 and a bitrate of 160
Make sire that large file size, web optimized, and iPod 5g support are all unchecked and then hit start.

I think we can tinker with those settings (especially bit rate) a little more to get a better picture quality, but the method described above already outputs a prety decent result which plays without any stutter or lag for me.

Hmm so I used these settings to encode LOTR 1 and it came out with choppy sound and "snow" or "ants" as the video. Do you think this might have been because it was a "Full screen" dvd? It wouldn't let me change the video picture settings to 1280x720.

I'm gonna try again with Two Towers as it is widescreen and see what happens

Also, when I try to start encoding it says I may have the wrong version of VLC, something about the 32 bit version not being compatible with 64bit Handbrake...it gives me the option to attempt to scan anyway or get VLC....but I already downloaded VLC from that link so....?

Ok so I now have 32 bit VLC and 32 bit Handbrake and it is still giving me that error message. I tried to get 64 bit VLC but it says I can't use it on this mac.

The scan will NOT find my Two Towers DVD...ugh frustrating.

So is there some way to get the digital copies of movies converted to a format that the xoom will like

Yes! DVD Catalyst! The device has been here in the forums helping people out. 10 slackers for.the program and it has a Xoom preset. There's a free version also.
