Paul,
After trying SFR, Bonsai, Baked Snack, and Midnight with EC05 ... my best experience has been with Midnight 5.2 BYOR with Journaling On. Glad your looking at the journaling on option. Business users like stability.
I couldn't agree more with your theory on KISS (keep it simple stupid). I think the reason Midnight 5.2 BYOR has worked well, is that I didn't load the standard Midnight 5.2 "upgrade." I loaded Rob's stripped down 5.2 ROM and stripped out a couple more things. Loaded Zeam Launcher (this simplest, fastest IMHO), and added my business apps (2 push email acct, 2 push calendar, 1 push tasks, and several other apps). As I detailed in the Midnight thread, after customizing and themeing, I started to get big battery drain and some instability. Backed it down to basics and stability, smoothness and decent battery returned.
Notice you're currently using Bionix Black theme with SFR. Hope you include aspects of that theme (maybe even some improvements/additional dark themeing?) in the updated ACE. It's sleek, battery friendly, and modern. It would continue to elevate ACE's game. As for boot animations, Midnight 5.2 has a nice one (I also liked your spinning coin in ACE 1.7).
I'll be curious to see your choice of kernal(s) that can marry with an updated ACE. I agree with your statement, that kernals can have a big impact on stability and battery. While the Genocide full-custom kernal was fun to play with, it's seems more geared to experimentation than stabilization. I've flashed BS kernals with all kinds of ROMs and have had mixed results. Midnight works off a Bonsai kernal and seems to have done well in my use during the past week.
Enough of my very noob input. Thanks for all your work on AC and for continuing to upgrade ACE. Cheers
