[ROM][AOSP][4.0.3] Codename Android 1.5.5 [Full Open Source]

Don't use ROM manager, lol.

Is the ROM on your internal sd card? I'm not familiar with where RM stores it.. Did you make a backup before trying to flash?

Pull battery.. replace.. hold vol up+down and power to get to the bootloader. Use vol down to scroll to recovery, hit power to select.. hopefully this will get you into CWR. From there I would check to see if the ROM is on your sd card, you can go to Instal zip from sd card and scroll around to find it. If its there, back out, wipe data/factory reset, then install it and reboot.

If its not on your sd card tho.. go to backup/restore and see if you have a backup, if you do.. restore it, when your up and running again download the ROM straight to your sd card and install following instructions above.

Let me know how this works out and if your still stuck..

Thanks for your help! I did get back to CWR but I couldnt find the rom on the sd card. I was able to restore to the previous setting. Thanks again!
Obvioulsy I'm new to this... If I shouldnt use rom manager where is the best place to roms/mods and what is the process after that? I'm coming from a Palm Pre where there was an awesome ap for finding and installing homebrew patches right from the phone. Is there anything like that here?

I believe he was saying to use CWR only...That's what he told me a few months ago and I've had no issues.

Great glad you got back up and running, and your welcome..

The reason more experienced people will tell you not to use ROM manager is because its much better for you to learn how to wipe and flash new roms yourself from within clockwork recovery (CWR).. Obviously you've seen how RM can fail for you.. and their are times when you can get yourself in a screwy situation like you were just in and if you don't know the basics of navigating CWR and working with your phone you can be screwed, lol.

Best thing is just to browse the forums for ROMs you want to try, I would not use any apps to locate them. Rootzwiki is definitely the best site to browse ([CDMA] Galaxy Nexus Developer Forum - RootzWiki)...

When you want to install a ROM, just download it to your sd card, either straight from your phone, or first to your computer, then copy to your internal memory over USB. Don't forget to download the GAPPs (Google apps) as well, if they aren't included in the ROM.. the first post (OP) of the ROM thread will tell you what you need to know about GAPPs. Then boot into recovery just as you did before, make a backup if you like (recommended) and:
Wipe data/factory reset (won't wipe your sd card)
Under Mounts and Storage> Format /system
Under advanced> Wipe dalvik cache
Install the ROM.. Install the GAPPs if applicable
Reboot.

You don't always have to wipe/format all those but its a GOOD idea to get into that habit.
If you don't already have Titanium Backup its a good idea to get it with the pro key (paid version) and use that to backup your apps and data.. Then when you install a new ROM you can just download TiBu from the market and use that to restore your apps and data (always USER apps such as your games and stuff, never restore system data)....... I know it can all sound like a lot but its pretty easy to get the hang of.. don't be afraid to ask if you get confused, we're all here to help :)

EDIT: Jesus christ do I know how to write a novel to answer a question or what??

I usually

1) wipe data/factory reset
2) wipe cache
3) wipe dalvik cache

Is that not enough? Should I be doing the "format/system" as well? I was under the impression the 3 steps I've been doing is pretty much the standard.

Very nice short tutorial. You deserve a like and a thanks for that one. Well done!

Lol right back atcha... I give em out like candy :)

I have had this idea for a while to write up like a grand epic post, maybe 3-4 posts, start my own noobie-type, plain english guide for newbies that walks them through all the basics of stuff like that.. the reasoning behind it, how to do things the right way, forum etiquette.. the whole enchilada.. haha.. I might do it. Maybe I'll save it up for my 1000th post that I'm closing in on ;)

Anyway.. we are minutes away from 1.4.0.. make your backups and get ready to WIPE guys!

Doing a format /system is a GREAT thing to do before any ROM flash.. AOSP-based ROM's are technically supposed to do this for you anyway, but I like to do it myself just to be sure, and you should definitely do it before flashing any other ROM. Get the whole old system out of there before you stick a new one in :)

i usually format /system, moreso as a habit from tbolt days - bc going from froyo to gb it was a highly recommended step.

not sure how necessary it is going from ics rom to ics rom, but it can't hurt, so it's probably worth doing if you want to be careful.

also kudos 2def for the help you've been doling out in here. it's appreciated.

I say do it! It's a pain, but it's nice to see others profit.

I did the Linux Guide because I wanted to know how to do it myself. (I'm one of those guys who never boots Windows unless it's a last resort. Not that I have anything against Windows, it's just how I roll. LOL) Anyway, I found very little beginner oriented information that put it all together. Most of the Linux guys were pretty advanced and assumed that others just know some of this stuff. Once I found all of the information, I knew I would never remember everything so I put in a guide. It's a lot of work, but I've used it a couple of times and I think one other person has too. Ha, ha...

I posted my Touchstone Guide because I think the Touchstone is one of the coolest mobile device accessories ever invented!!!! (It's one of those things that you just have to use to really appreciate. :) )

Anyway, back on topic. Codename 1.4.0 on the way!!!

What does this mean? This was in the change notes for 1.3.3.

Some of the files on the CDMA/LTE version of the GN are not open source, but proprietary. The open source developers don't have access to the source code and can't fix/modify those files. The radio files are one, I can't think of the others off the top of my head. Basically, he has included some or all of those files in this release. Don't get your hopes up about this meaning that 1.4.0 is based on android 4.0.4. Codename is AOSP based, so we won't see AOSP based roms running on 4.0.4 until google pushes the source code to AOSP, which may not happen. Google may wait until 4.0.5 or later to do that.

OP has been updated with 1.4.0 download and changelog :)

Enjoy

The Google Apps are no longer included in 1.4.0 and need to be flashed separately. It would be helpful to update the flashing instructions in the OP to let everyone know that. (It''s mentioned in the changelog, but not everyone reads through it.)

It's added to the flash instructions.
