Re: [ROM] - gROM 2.1 - 10/8 - GB - OC'ed - Infinite Possibilities
Dude, thats exactly what I thought was going on. I dont use this phone much but I have it set up to sync one gmail via wifi. I also noticed that when the phone is idle for long periods it doesn't sync until screen comes back on. I only noticed this just a couple days ago.
Hmmmm... As far as fixing it.. There are a lot of variables involved. First I need to gather more data from you... Is it just those programs that dont sync? Gapps related or do you have any other programs that fail to sync timely?
I don't regularly use anything that uses push/sync other than Gapps.
Checking Fancy Widgets right now, with the setting set to "wake for refresh". The update time is always listed to whatever time I wake the phone up at, or in other words, the phone doesn't appear to be woken when it's supposed to, e.g. the next update is scheduled for 11:50 and when I turn on my phone at 11:52, the last update is shown as 11:52 instead of 11:50.
I fiddled around with both K9 and Maildroid when I first noticed the problems on stock GB. They both were able to sync/receive push notifications, although I'm not sure that they work exactly the same as Gapps. Also, I didn't particularly care for either app. MailDroid lasted around an hour and K9 lasted for 24 hours. As I remember, K9 did receive push notifications after the phone remained in standby overnight, but again, I'm not entirely sure K9 works in the same manner as Gapps.
Checking the last sync times for Gmail, Contacts, and Calendar, they all seem to sync right when the phone is woken by the power button. So when I add a contact/appointment or send myself an email the new event/email won't be updated received until the time I wake my phone. I haven't timed it exactly, but it seems that if I receive an email within about five minutes of putting my phone in standby, I'll receive a push notification. Anything longer, and nothing until the phone has been woken for a minute or so.
Just for comparison, on Froyo, if I was logged into Gmail on a desktop, I would usually receive a push notification for new mail on my phone (while it was in standby) anywhere from 1-5 minutes before the new email would show on the desktop.
It pains me to say it, but I might have to try the Twitter app to see if I can get push notifications through it. Has anyone else with syncing issues been able to receive push notifications with Twitter?
We both see it, on wifi and 3G so that eliminates some differential. On my Ev0 3D there is like a power save option that stops sync from occuring as well as peak time settings. Have you had a chance to look there? Maybe there is a toggle that needs to be thrown for full sync?
Once I realized things weren't syncing correctly, I thought GB might have a new setting for sync/refresh interval or a power save option. If there is one, I haven't been able to find it. Background data and auto sync are both enabled in account settings and I haven't found any separate sync settings in any of the Gapps.
Let me know what else you find out.
I, like you, dont think its gapps because the same gapps work fine on 3D. So it has to be in the OS / kernel itself. I am going OS with this one. SO its fault OS or screwed up settings...
Also, I am hesitant to say that I don't think everyone is being affected by this. The number of people posting the issue would be much higher.
The issue is pretty sneaky. If you aren't attached to your push notification/email, I don't know that you would notice the issue. It took me a day or two to notice after the OTA GB update; even then, I had to send myself a couple test emails to be sure. It tricked me for a little bit because I would send an email to myself from my desktop, then immediately check my phone and I'd receive a push notification. If I sent an email and waited an hour, I wouldn't get the push until after turning on my phone and waiting about a minute. If you use your phone a lot, which I don't, you could get the illusion that your phone is syncing/receiving push notifications instantly. Coupled with the charging issues and the SD mounting problems and I could see how it could be overlooked. I'm not trying to claim that it's widespread, especially since it isn't listed as a major problem on Sprint's GB update thread, but given all the other problems, I can see why some might not have noticed.
Hopefully there's some helpful info from my anecdotes. I might try looking for some other apps that use push to try and test it a bit. Anyways, thanks for even taking a brief moment to look it over.
Edit: On a side note, my battery use under About Phone is all messed up. Battery usage was always off under Froyo, but at least the time between charges was correct. My phone has been unplugged for three days and it says my phone has only been on for 2 hours on battery. It doesn't affect anything, but it's a weird issue.
