[ROM]Mostly Stock EI22 | Update 4 11/12

Sorry for the duplicate post, but I thought I was posting this question here before.

Is [ROM]Mostly Stock EI22 | Update 4 11/12 EXT4 compatible. I know that the kernel by nubecoder is EXT4 compatible. I'm new at this and was not sure if the ROM itself also had to be EXT4 compatible.

Thanks.
I'd like to hear an expert respond to your question. All I know is I was running this and then ran RFS2EXT4.zip. After that, my phone hung at the Nubecoder splash screen. I ended up wiping everything and loading the ACS ICS ROM.

I ran RFS2EXT4 after installing this ROM as well and had the same issue. I converted back to RFS, restored my CMW backup and everything was fine. It's my impression that EXT4 won't work with this ROM. I think it will work with NUBERNEL though.

Yes the ROM should support EXT4, you just have to make sure your using a kernel that supports EXT4 for everything to work...

Well, the first time I tried it with Numbernel. I might try it again with Samuri and see what happens. I'll post back with my results.

Ok, I was able to convert from RFS to EXT4 on this ROM using the latest Nubernel kernel. But what I had to do was take my own Clockwork backup, run RFS2EXT4, factory wipe the phone, then restore my Clockwork backup. Everything worked perfectly this way with no data loss.

I just installed this, since it seemed like it would change the least amount of things with the Gingerbread ROM while also providing some of the most important fixes. I did backups with CWM, Titanium Backup, and MyBackup Root before flashing the zip file without wiping -- there was a comment in ROM Manager from DRockstar that this was "an excellent ROM for beginners, no wipe necessary, no problems keeping data from stock config." So I took a chance on a no-wipe installation, and it seemed to work fine. I haven't done much with it yet, but definitely like the 1% battery mod, silent camera, GPS fix, think the 3G/1x icon fix will be useful, and was glad to see things like noCIQ, extended power menu, and the LogsProvider fix. Looks good, I expect it will be stable since it doesn't seem to have too many mods, and hope it will improve my battery life. I had a minor issue with losing internal phone memory space, but after I wiped my regular and dalvik caches, I got it all back and then some. The kernel seems to affect this though -- after updating it because of the video recording problem mentioned elsewhere, I lost space again, though not as much the first time. It would be nice to get around this somehow, but oh well. So one thing:

I noticed that some bloatware was removed, and that's OK. I don't think I used what I noticed was taken out, like Sprint TV, Samsung Media Hub, Sprint's Nascar app. A few I still see present, mainly Sprint Football and Sprint ID, and was wondering how to remove them. If it's easy enough to do, I might go for it. If not, I'd be OK with leaving them there.

Thanks!

What's weird is I installed the latest updated rom and I didn't realize any changes besides call log fix, and this new kernel and new boot. But I did not see camera fix, nor did I get bloatware removed or hotspot hack. I manually flashed camera fix and hotspot. I'm wondering why I didn't get the "complete package" like everyone else!

I don't know -- for me, I seemed to not get the LogsProvider Fix (the one that takes text messages out of the call log). Of course, I only realized this after I got a text message, which took a few days. I was wondering what happened, too, but just flashed the fix separately, so it's fine now. I'm not sure why certain things that should be in the ROM wouldn't get installed properly.

As I read your post not 5 minutes after I just wiped all my data... sigh.

So.... looking for some guidance. I made a titanium backup before installing mostly stock... but titanium was gone when I rebooted into the new ROM. So I reinstalled it from the Market... but it doesn't recognize that I have a backup. Or did my data wipe kill my backup too?

Also,... I made an ACS Recovery backup... if I restore that, will that restore only data, or restore everything (which seems like it would screw me up...though maybe not since I was on stock GB before...)

No a data wipe would not erase anything on your SDCARD. SDCARD is always a safe spot, no data wipes etc, will touch that. Titanium should recognize the backup, not sure why it isn't....

You could try to restore your data only but there is a chance it can mess things up. I would recommend making another Nandroid Backup of your current setup, then go and try the data restore from your previous backup. If things go sour, you can always do a full restore of this most current backup to fix anything that goes wrong.

If I hook up my phone to my pc, I can SEE the tar.gz files that the backup made (I think)... but drat... my new download of Titanium just doesn't see it.

So... just to clarify - a Nandroid backup is what you are calling the backup I made using ACS - and that is a complete "binary" copy of everything? Ie., if I restore that backup I made before flashing mostly stock (and Nubernal's newer kernel to fix the video recording...), then I would be restoring to stock GB (rooted, but without the new ROM)? Sorry for the basic questions... my first time to root this phone (hey - with a 3 year old, who has time to actually have fun with their phone!?).

UPDATE... ok... I was able to get my titanium backup to work... and I had an SD export of my contacts... sweet! Thanks Paul, all! It looks like the only thing I lost (lesson learned here) was my password file in OI Safe... oops... needed to do a special backup from within OI Safe to keep that one... sigh. Live and learn. I am now happily rooted, with Mostly Stock running... my GPS is happy again... my phone is faster... it's like a new toy! :-)

Installed this ROM first, that went fine. Then tried updating to EI11 modem, that was a nightmare because while it ODIN, it failed and locked up while trying to downgrade to EC05 and was giving me the "phone, caution, computer" icons at boot. But after a couple hours i managed to fix it by doing a complete wipe. So i got EI11 modem installed, then had to install this ROM again. Restored all my backups with My Backup Root, moved all app to SD card that I could & removed a few other apps i don't need or use with Titanium Backup Root. Only problem I have now is when I open the camera, switch to video, and press record, it just freezes up. I'm able to exit with task manager, but when I try open the camera again, I get "Warning. Camera Failed." Phone becomes extremely slow and unresponsive after this, and I have to reboot or sometimes pull the battery. Anyone else have any issues like this?

I'm stock right now and upgraded to EL30 this morning.

Do I need to wait for a mostly stock EL30 ROM or if I root and go with this will I be OK? I'm just trying to get maximum usability from my Epic before I go and switch phones in a couple weeks.

Right now I'm in Mostly Stock EI22. I got the notification for the OTA EL30 push this morning. Should I go ahead and update or wait for a couple weeks for some EL30 ROMs to come out?

If I should go to EL30 from here do I need to go back to EI22 stock first and then to EL30? What benefits, if any, would EL30 give over Mostly Stock EI22?

Give it a few days.... Basically a EL30 stock ROM will have whatever updates Sprint/Sammy applied and thats about it. Along the same lines as EI22.

So has this been updated yet?

If not, how can I most easily backup my current system, go back to EI22 and then upgrade to the EL30 OTA update? I downloaded Titanium PRO, but there seems to be an issue with it at the moment.

Not yet. I actually asked in the XDA thread if we could get an update, because it's been over a month since the dev said an update was coming, and I haven't seen any more information about an EL30 version since then. I really hope an update comes soon, but I may have to consider another ROM if this one continues to appear stalled and going nowhere (unfortunately).

You don't have to go back to stock and get the OTA. There are other EL30 ROMs available, including a basic rooted-deodexed-stock one. I'm far from an expert on this, but I *think* you could probably flash that basic EL30 one over the EI22 Mostly Stock ROM. You lose the extra features Mostly Stock had though, which is why I've held off on doing it -- as simple and as few as they are, I want those. AFAIK, most of these EL30 ROMs don't include an updated modem though; a separate process is needed to get that (unless things have changed).

But as for backups, Titanium Backup and MyBackup Root are the two I think I've read about the most often. You could try MyBackup if Titanium is having problems. Personally, I haven't needed to restore apps/data with either yet. I flashed the Mostly Stock ROM without a wipe, and things have been fine. That's also why I'd like to get an EL30 of it -- to avoid having to wipe and restore. If there are other ROMs that can be flashed without wiping, please let me know. They're probably my next choice if this one continues to remain un-updated. Thanks.
