Hi blackops,

Sorry to jump into the middle of your conversation here, but I skipped over the data2ext part when flashing my dad's Optimus, and now that I'm working on my Evo and learning about the a2sd scripts, it looks like this is something I should have done (I believe the two are equivalent on their respective platforms, correct?) I can handle the partitioning part, but have a couple questions, if you don't mind. Is there any downside to doing this on the Optimus--does it put a drag on performance? Also, is there a preferred SD class rating when doing this on the Optimus? (thinking of the Nook Color, where the class2 Sandisks work best due to their faster random r/w speeds.)

And if I repartition the uSD card at this point, will that necessitate a re-flash of the ROM? If I'm not mistaken, I won't be able to restore a nandroid created prior to partitioning, due to the changes in the filesystem--correct?

Thanks!
All you would need to do before you partition you're sd card is save a copy on your PC. When you partition it erases everything on card. It should not effect your rom. So you would not need to reflash it. I am using a class 4 (higher class, faster card) card, the ones that come with phone are junk.
Now all of this relates to data2ext since that is what I am using. I am not sure about a2sd.
I am also using Xionia recovery, and once the sd card was partition I just moved everything from PC back to card. And yes nandroids still work.
Once you do this make a new nandroid. If you flash another rom data2ext will need to be reflashed and enabled again.

If you use cwma 3 it will partition the sd-ext as ext4 and you just have to flash the ext modified zip. Link for cwma 3 is in the data2ext thread here I think or in the Optimus V forums, also don't all think all this data2ext talk should be in the data2ext thread? We are cluttering up Nicks thread....

Nick,

Thought of some significant (in my opinion) features that could be added to Reborn in the next version. I usually don't fawn over CM features, but I heard about these two and they seem like they would be extremely useful.

First, is the ability to force permission restrictions on an app. For instance, half the apps out there want access to my GPS position all the time.

Second is the ability to force quit by long-pressing the back button. There are tons of apps (games, mostly) that have no quit button and continue running in the background when I leave them. There is no reason that a game, of all things, needs to constantly be running in the background. It would be awesome to have an OS level force quit with a back button long press.

I got the ext4 partition to work. I had to change the order of installation. I needed to flash the zip first. When I tried entering the commands, it would not recognize the tune2fs command. Once I flashed the zip, I was able to enter the commands and enable the partition.

I would like to thanks blackops and glitchsta for finding this and helping me get this running.

I do have one question. If I load another rom, will any of these changes be removed? Do I need to do anything to enable this again?

Yes if you flash another rom you will need to reflash the data2ext zip and then in adb shell "data2ext --enable" again.
You do not need to enter the commands again. Just flash the zip & enable.

Yes you will need to reflash the data2ext zip and then enable. You DO NOT have to enter the commands again. Just flash zip and enable.
Now if you decide to try CM7 you would flash a different zip then the one used for reborn.
I can not upload that zip now, not at computer.
Its the un-modified data2ext4-v4 zip. I keep copies of both on my sd card so I can switch between the 2 roms if I have too.

HIT THAT THANKS BUTTON! LOL

Thanks blackops.

So, you have successfully restored a pre-data2ext nandroid to a post-data2ext ROM? This is where I get hung up. I'd read elsewhere that those prior nandroids would not work if restored to the partitioned system, due to the file system having changed. The technical stuff goes over my head, but what seems to make sense to me is that the apps have moved to a different place, so I logically I can see why it wouldn't work. I'm just curious if it's been done, or if this is all theoretical. Not that I doubt you, I'd just like to hear confirmation that it's been done successfully, thus indicating whether my older pre-data2ext/pre-partitioning nandroids would be worth saving or if they've become irrelevant.

btw, and this is only tangentially-related, but I've set up my newly flashed Evo to run this way under CM7 using S2E. Same thing, different script. No performance hit that I can tell, but I now have over 2GB of "internal" space. :) Also gives the option to play with moving dalvik, though I haven't tried that yet.

eta: just to clarify, my concern about the card speeds was one of random r/w vs sustained. Lots of discussion of this regarding running CM7 on ?SD on the Nook Color, where Sandisk class2's offer far and away the best performance, because of the frequent, small writes required by the OS (apparently with most cards, the random speed suffers at higher classes. There's a thread with a huge table of data over at XDA.) I thought that might apply here, but this seems to be more about storing the APKs, while the OS remains in internal memory.

Tell you the truth, if you did this I would make a new nandroid anyways, but let double check on pre-nandroids. I do believe I have done it.

They're in the same place, it's just the place has moved! That is, as far as your phone and Android are concerned they are in the same directory structure (/system/data) but that part of the directory tree has moved to a physical location with more storage (another partition of your SD card.) Ain't Linux grand?

I've little experience with Linux, aside from using Ubuntu and Mint a few times really, though I installed puppy on an ancient system for a friend a long time ago. Never did much with it though.

But what I'm seeing as I start playing around with Android, I can appreciate what appears to be a much more elegant, streamlined design than Windows and its registry. I like the more "modular" kind of structure...

HUH? I am not out of space on my phone, I am unable to update the programs on my phone that I have through the android market.
You're out of cache. Different cause, same symptom. You can put data2ext on either Reborn or CM7. You create another partition on your SD card and /system/data gets moved to it - result: lots of room for apps, libs, data, cache, etc.

Maybe we need a dedicated Data2ext thread/sticky that will take care of both Reborn and CM7 (with props to the XDA and Android Central Optimus V threads that led the way). With the limited amount of memory we have on the phone almost any rooted phone is going to run out of space and Link2SD is rapidly exhausted also. If you like to install apps you'll need data2ext sooner or later.

i looked through the theme page but i couldnt find it, was wondering if you had a stock theme layout for this rom?

edit: well i should say that there is a stock theme but it looks like its for an older version as it was built in may

rooted optimus s. installed xionia. when i flashed reborn ROM as instructed, when it rebooted it would not let me go past the screen with the emergency call on the left and select language on the right. when i touch the android, it does not do anything. when i select language, it crashes. i tried to restore nandroid backup and delete data, cache and dalvik cache and re-flash but still the same thing. i rebooted as well. any suggestions?
