[Root] Epic 4G Froyo & Eclair ClockworkMod v3.0.2.5 Switch Between RFS & EXT4

What Root do I use - New

A guy I worked with rooted my phone for me about a year ago which I use mainly so I can wifi tether. Since then I've switched jobs and my phone asks me to update to MR4 EC05 which includes an update to Android Froyo 2.2. I haven't done the update cuz im not sure how to reroot my phone after I finally update my phone. I have an Epic and own a Mac computer which I'm usually on but have access to a PC. Can someone send me in the right direction? My palm use to have a 1 click program anything like that for the epic? Thanks

There is nothing wrong with the version of rooting and CWM that Robbie suggested but I would like to see you on the most current version so try the thread below. It has been tested to work on MAC and PC so you should be fine either way :)

[MOD][One Click Root]ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1[RFS & EXT4]

Re: What Root do I use - New

thanks so i should do the update on my phone then run these correct? is it one click programs?

Re: What Root do I use - New

ok i c it says one click in title... o_O lol sorry... ne ideas on wats wrong with my battery im lucky for my phone to last 3hrs

Re: What Root do I use - New

Either you have a battery going bad or you need to change your usage habits because 3 hours is horrible even by heavy usage standards.

Re: What Root do I use - New

how do you recalibrate a battery? I may need to do that...

It depends. Do you want Froyo or GB (I'm guessing the latter)? If you look at the 'Rooting, ROMs, and hacks' section of the Epic 4g page which is where your thread is located, you will find many ROMs with detailed instructions. Currently, there is only an Alpha build of CM7 and there are still a fair amount of bugs in the ROM that the community has up for CM7. You can only overclock with certain kernels. You will know what kernels will be able to overclock by the OP's description.

Con(s):
Voids warranty

Don't let that con scare you. It is very hard to brick your phone. The only way you will be able to do that is if you try to flash a ROM on to your phone that's not meant for your phone. If you get into a semi-brick (on our phones, it shows a phone and computer linked with a dotted line on the screen of the Epic), we have software that will bring you back to stock.

Now to the advantages.

Pros:
Tether for free
Overclock
Undervolt
Better battery life
Faster performance overall
The ability to theme
Fix some problems the manufacturer couldn't
Get rid of bloatware

Hope this helps

Re: Please Help. Rooting Noob.

I also meant to say I want say that I want a stock gingerbread rom like nexus s thats y I said cm7

Re: Please Help. Rooting Noob.

I personally like the leake EH06 (android 2.3.4) I was also using SFR 1.2 (Syndicate Frozen Rom 1.2) and it proved to be a very solid ROM. I just wanted to run , and braggabout the fact that I was running 2.3.4
But I would try diferret ones, u might get diferrent results as it apears to be a slight difference for each phone. Good luck though.

Re: [Root] Epic 4G Froyo & Eclair ClockworkMod v3.0.2.5 Switch Be

I must admit I am seeing some glitchy behavior with EG22 but mostly goofy and inconvenient nothing integral and certainly not worse than stock Froyo. Still looking forward to the final release which I expect to be cleaner and perkier.

Re: [Root] Epic 4G Froyo & Eclair ClockworkMod v3.0.2.5 Switch Be

That seems to be the trend with the leaks of GB to this point. They run good for a week or so then start to break down. Some users end up doing a backup of their stuff and then just wipe everything in CWM and reflash the ROM and they are good again for another week or so...

It probably has a lot to do with whatever debugging code is left in the builds and little buggies still hiding in the corners :p

Re: [Root] Epic 4G Froyo & Eclair ClockworkMod v3.0.2.5 Switch Be

it looks like the RFS to EXT4 converter is more than a simple flash- does it wipe the whole phone and do I need phandroid installled? will it kill anything that is on my phone at present?

Make sure to make a nandroid back up before you do anything. What is your current set up? I don't think it works for the GB leaks if that is what you are trying to use it on. I generally only use that zip for older roms that don't automatically convert to the EXT4 file system or if I am coming from stock. Most roms do that automatically and say so in there opening post.

Re: [Root] Epic 4G Froyo & Eclair ClockworkMod v3.0.2.5 Switch Be

Quite the Android hustler I see! I need to get in on that racket..

Ragnarokx, If I am running stock EG22 via 3.1.0.1. can I convert to EXT4? I am not sure I understand what is involved. Do I need to wipe my phone and use a different ROM? Or can I just convert it with the existing operating system?

Ted, here are a few ROMs I dug up below. They are all EG22 based and all are capable of EXT4. I believe they are all EXT4 converted on installation/flashing of the ROM. Read the thread instructions per ROM for more info.

[ROM] RandomROM 2.3 HAWK [Journaled] EG22 | 8/17

[ERA] EpicuReAn SCrAMbLED EGgs22 v7 w/ EG22 PLUS KERNEL 8/9/2011

[ROM][ACS] Go Green 8/3

The link below is to a custom EXT4 kernel which you can flash in CWM just as you would a ROM, (no wipe required) and it will convert STOCK EG22 from RFS to EXT4 :)

[ACS][KERNEL]EG22Plus Rooted Ext4 Tweaked ACS Updater Compatible
