Rooting using procedure #1 will leave you setup as is. No changes will be made other than providing root access with CWM 2.5.1.0 installed.First off, I "lurk" around several Android sites reading and picking up the many bits and pieces of info related to rooting. This is one of the better sites I've come across, for you guys provide most excellent step by step procedures, tips, tricks, and support. Bravo and thanks!
I'm a previous HTC Hero owner and found that to be pretty easy to root and flash many different custom ROMs. I've recently upgraded to an Epic 4G and so far quite like it (Froyo 2.2.1 ECO5). I'm about to jump into rooting my Epic using Procedure 1 Untouched but would like to clarify a couple of things:
1) Does Procedure 1 just root the phone (i.e. doesn't flash an ECO5 ROM effectively replacing how the phone is currently set up)? If so, excellent! I've spent the last week playing around with my Epic, have it pretty much set up how I like with all my apps, corporate contacts, even right down to the live wallpaper...don't really want to start over if I don't have to. I think I'll fly with that for a while until a custom ROM really catches my eye (Syndicate ROM has my attention).
There is Odin which you seem to be aware of and until recently that was the only way. The following link is something new and is intended for users that loose USB capabilities due to a faulty USB port and can't use Odin but its another method that can be used. Link is below if you would like to check it out. Of course before performing either method here just install Titanium Backup or Mybackup Root and do your backups first, then its saved on your sdcard for later use.2) Is there a method by which my current, stock setup (unrooted) can be backed up so that it can be easily/quickly reflashed just in case I need Sprint support? I'd don't anticipate having to take my phone in but you never knowI realize an Odin will take me back to unrooted stock...and also take it to an "out of the box" state.
No problem, hope you found what your looking forAgain, thanks for an excellent place to lurk. Your info is much appreciated!
Ok, so I'm trying to convert to ext4 and flash syndicate on my epic. I'm pretty sure the drivers installed correctly, but every time I try to do the run.bat file, it says my phone isn't connected. I'm using the USB cable I used to do Procedure 1(which worked flawlessly), plus I've tried most of the USB ports on my computer. Both my computer and phone have been restarted in almost every combination I can think of, but to no avail.
I'm really excited to see what this phone can do, but I feel like I want to throw something out the window because I keep getting the error "Phone is not connected". Can someone please help?
P.S. I'm using a rooted EC05
update: I tried reinstalling the drivers and it's taking forever to install the SAMSUNG Android USB Modem, would that be a problem?
Sometimes installing the drivers can take forever.. The initial install isn't bad, but once you plug in your device with debugging on then the composite drivers etc, finish installing which can take a while... Ive had it hang on one driver for 5 minutes or better then all the sudden it continues onward..
See procedure #1 in this thread, OP. That is for basic root with ClockWorkMod installed. Good for removing bloatware, using wireless tethering, backup programs..I am currently running EC05 OTA. What must I do to achieve root?
I'm running a rooted Epic that's on Froyo.EB13 and an EXT file system. I'm basically happy with my functionality except that voice commands don't work with bluetooth. What is the easiest way to fix it? I need full bluetooth capability before I get another $130 ticket for simply touching my phone while driving. Using the speaker phone isn't enough in this state.
Thanks, what is the link to the upgrade from where I'm at now?
