S-Pen Top Button

Dumb question maybe? Just went from a Note 4 to a 10+. Does the button on the top of the S-Pen do anything &/or what purpose does it serve? It doesn't appear to actually lock the pen in place and just makes for an extra (annoying) step to access the pen so I've been leaving un-depressed for easy access like on my Note 4 - Is there any issue with doing so?

It doesn't have any feature based purpose that I'm aware of. I think it is supposed to help keep the pen in its place though. As a fidgeter I love it. I'm constantly messing with mine.

It also is what makes it pop out so you can grab it

That's what I figured but can't see even how it does that. I'm now going to try not to fidget with it as I hadn't thought about that:).

That's also what I figured and I guess if one didn't have a case, it keeps the end of the pen flush with the bezel which wasn't an issue with the design of the Note 4 but with my case the pen is already set into a recessed area, making depressing it to access even worse.

Thanks - I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something!

I leave mine in the clicked out position with my case. doesn't stick out from the case or leave it loose, but it does give it an easy grab for removal with only one step instead of two. your use case may be different.

That's exactly what I've been doing - Much more convenient! I didn't see any need to leave it depressed (like maybe that's when it charged) but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

It seems pretty secure that way but I'm not confident enough to do that. It feels like it's held in by friction and a certain point the groove in the pen. Great idea though because some cases make it difficult to remove the pen.

I keep mine in that position continually. haven't had any issues with the s pen not being charged so I'd say it's fine to leave it that way. it's been since 9/5/19.

Really surprised that it doesn't have dual functionality. Would be kinda cool as a camera shutter.

Something would be nice. I can see why it's there now. On my Note 4 the S-Pen was in a recessed area and on my Note 10+ case it's in a similar recessed area but on my wife's Note 10 case (or either w/o a case) the end of the S-Pen sits flush so w/o this "feature' the pen would be very difficult to get out or would always be sticking out.

As much as I use my S-Pen it would drive me nuts to add this extra step every time I wanted to access it. I've left it un-depressed for weeks now with no apparent issues.
