S5 Freezing Up

Problem solved! Traded for a HTC One M8 and couldn't be happier! Took a huge loss but was worth it!

A co-worker has an S4 which he really enjoys.

He must, he has managed to break 5 of them so far, and he keeps paying the insurance fee to get it replaced... he carries the thing in his hip pocket of all places.

I have a Speck CandyShell Grip case on my S5, it stays in my shirt pocket with a neck strap looped around my neck. I have not lost or broken a phone in over 5 years now.

I learned about neck straps after loosing a couple of phones in water puddles and toilets. :(

I got my Galaxy s5 the first day of the release.... about 2 weeks ago... My phone is starting to lag a lot and freeze.... I also noticed my camera is shutting off alone... My facebook freezes and I get a black screen for about 2-3 minutes.... I am just installing this update right now to see if it fixes the issue.....

Exchange your phone then. This phone isn't perfect but it's a flagship phone and shouldn't freeze.

yes exchange that brand new phone for a refurbished one. It's not new like the $700 bucks you paid but they don't care...

I think I found a primitive fix for this... When it freezes up on me I immediately hit the power off button and leave it off for 10 seconds. When I wake it back up with the power button it seems to work fine. Saves me from having to remove the battery and wait 10 minutes.

I just got my S5 yesterday and as i was playing Deemo it immediately blacked out and didn't want to turn on no matter what i did. Does anyone have an idea to resolve this issue other than taking it back to the store? It's been charging for a long time already but still doesnt want to turn on.

I have a galaxy a 5 phone my phone freezes and turns off, by it self, I have done a factory reset, but it still freezes,

Try enabling Developer Options & switch "Runtime Mode" to "ART". Helped a little with the lag time & freezing/removing battery problems.

May have to switch it back to "DALVIK" if you find things not working. For example, while running ART, my PIN wasn't recognized when I tried to turn on PRIVATE MODE. So I went back to DALVIK, did what I wanted to do in PRIVATE MODE & turned it off & then went back to ART.

Hope it helps a little!

Same problem here with my S5 in an OtterBox. Screen sometimes goes black and phone is completely unresponsive. All I see is my flashing blue message indicator light. As mentioned, this is very frustrating since removing the case to remove the battery is a real pita. :-\

* I went to Settings > About Device > Software Update and there was a 133MB update available so I'm hoping this update may contain a fix for the "locking up" issue... I'll report back in about a week or so.

If it's an important update ( or any update) wouldn't you be notified?

I just figured out why mine was freezing it was the cheap china battery i ordered from ebay that can not handle the flash, if I put in my factory battery it works 100 percent. Just wanted to tell my story hope this helps someone.

It's not a fix but a band-aid. If you can exchange or return I would probably take a refurbished than deal with this.

My first S5 had this issue but I just thought it was a bug and didn't think any of it. I exchanged because of charging issue.

You have phantom droid, as we used to call it. Some 3rd party apps such as the flash light cause that or the task killers. Remember be very picky what apps you download because those apps are busy with all the new permissions they get. They are going through your contacts, media folders, files, email, pretty much everything including your camera and a mic are being accessed. These apps access the internal background of the phone which causes this haywire behavior your are explaining.

I heard of this issue from my boss with his Note 3 and thought it must've been something he installed. But this morning my S5 did the same... buttons on the bottom light up but not the screen. I had to do a battery pull. Btw, I'm not using a flip case, or any case for that matter. Another thing I did was a complete wipe a day before, wonder if that's why I got the problem

Yep, same here! Got mine through EE and was well within the cooling off period. Should be easy right? Return during the cooling off period. No, EE are idiots! That odd situation aside, as I could rant about that for days, the same is happening to me. I also need to pull out the battery several times a day. I am going to run it in Safe Mode and see if that makes a difference. Permissions will be the next thing to try after that. Seems to be a HUGE issue! Given I use it for work too, I am not at all happy with it!!

Yep. Goosed in Safe Mode also. Pressed the button, bottom buttons lit up, screen was blank. Eventually came on but screen had 'white noise' picture before Samsung boot logo appeared, then booted into Android. The 'white noise' or random reboot doesn't always happen, but the blank screen always does when it goes wrong. It's usually several times a day. This tells me it's the OS. A previous Factory Reset didn't fix it.

I have the same EXACT problem! buttons at bottom working but screen is black, and sometimes the screen shows white noise and I have to remove/insert battery to reboot it. I noticed that this happens when I put the phone on the desk or when I take it out of my pocket, maybe it's a hardware problem caused by something inside the phone moving from its place when the phone is shaked or firmly pressed! Please if anyone know what this problem is let us know!

The updates appeared to fix my issue. Since updating it has not locked up. Woohoo!
