This is more in line with what I've experienced putting both cameras side by side. Pixel 2XL is sharper with slightly more detail, but the S9+ holds it's own and just looks outstanding.

That's sort of par for the course with Samsung releases. A week ago all we heard was negativity regarding this phone. Everything from "meh" to "horrible photos" to weird comparisons to the Pixel 2XL. Now that people are actually getting these phones in their hands, we're now hearing how terrific this phone and it's camera actually are.

Your're right in that I think there was a lot of early biases going on to try and steer folks towards a certain other phone.

My real world shooting with Sammy's since the S7 has been lackluster. My three year old iPhone consistently took more accurate and better quality photos than my Note 8 in all but the best lightning conditions. I think there's far more bias toward the Korean manufacturer than there is toward Pixel owners. Samsung still hasn't nailed portrait mode and it's ability to capture and process photos outside of an object or person being completely still leaves much to be desired.

Exactly I'm not sure who is saying the camera is horrible. Sure there may be few posts here and there which will be there for any phone. At least all the reviews, hands on and other reports I have read is this is a great camera. Personal experience is also that it's a great camera. Does it blow other camera on iPhone X or Pixel 2? No but definitely top of the stack and comes down to preference.

Samsung tends to prioritize pleasure over authenticity.

Granted, they've toned it down over the years but compare it to an iPhone (8 and X are more vibrant though compared to the 7) and the Pixel and the difference is clear.

It's not bad, but it's a different approach. I've personally stuck to using the Pixel 2 camera on the Note8 and aside from being a tad grainier due to less aggressive conventional NR (which I'm totally fine with), I preferred its output. It's almost always closer to what I see in reality with vastly improve DR.

It's definitely a top 5 or even a top 3 camera so far. I don't think Samsung knocked it out of the park with this one (honestly, I don't think we'd notice that much given how good phone cameras have become) but they certainly have not regressed. It's still a great camera and a very solid improvement over the Note8.

Well, about that DxO score.....

.....it's a tad misleading due to its aggregate. Comparing it to the last champ, the Pixel 2, the S9+ mainly wins in zoom and noise (latter should have been weighted more IMO). Pixel was better in exposure and others alongside video.

Not saying the S9 camera is bad. Again, it's great and it's probably a top 3 shooter. Just that we shouldn't take aggregate DxO scores as a definitive source to judge camera quality. It's like a benchmark.

The DXO Mark is very misleading. You need to look at the scores. I took a picture of my son with the S9+ and Pixel 2 XL and the Pixel has way more definition and detail.

And that's why none of this matters. Everyone sees something a little differently. Everyone's eyes are different. Everyone has different tastes.
