Here in Indiana they charge sales tax after the trade.
IOW
phone cost 1000
trade value was 500

You pay sales tax on the 500 amount not the 1000.

Guess I have fun fighting Samung on this , think I wait till after Fold 4 arrives.

Others have had this issue as I have seen post on other forums.

Mustang have you ever seen this?

In my experience, it's customary for sales tax to be based on the full retail price of the item (I live in California). It may also have to do with how the discount or trade-in is managed, because if the trade-in is dealt with afterwards (by giving you a $500 credit or refund), then the sales tax will be based on the full price you initially paid. That's how it works with the Google Store -- I traded in my Pixel 3a XL to get a $300 trade-in value for the Pixel 6a, but I had to purchase the 6a outright at full price, and then wait for Google to validate my trade-in. Once they did that, then I got a $300 credit back.

This site might be helpful: https://www.taxjar.com/blog/calculations/2021-12-sales-tax-discounts-coupons-promotions. It says "If, however, the discount is sponsored by the manufacturer or the distributor and you will be reimbursed by either of these parties for offering the discount, the sales tax base is the full sales price and not the reduced sales price."

It varies state to state. For some reason Samsung doesn't follow the state tax laws for tax on full amount or the lower. I think this happened on the S22U release and Samsung would credit the order if it was brought to their attention. I can't remember for sure though

Yay, FedEx showing my phone has been picked up and on the way for Tuesday delivery.
Order on Samsung site still showing In Process

Yeah thats what i thought

Yeah, I'm sure it varies state-to-state. In Ohio according to my reverse math, it appears to be taxed on the net price of the device with trade-in, plus any "free" add-ons, like the charging stand and band that are offered with the GW5

In any event, it's not worth fighting Samsung about. They are using the same tax tables as any other online retailer.

In California, we practically being taxed on every damn thing. Nothing new here. We're being taxed on all items at the original price.

It sucks bro!!! And it's just getting worse
I know, usually here in Jersey u get taxed on everything I'm glad they give a little break, we have one the highest insurance in the country, property tax , tolls you name it :(
