Samsung Cloud Going Away

It's my understanding that just Gallery & Drive sync is going to OneDrive. Things like all the other synced items (notes, reminders, Bluetooth, etc.) will remain within Samsung.

According to the email I got, you are right.

As a Verizon customer I can't use Samsung cloud. Lol

Carriers blocking it might be a part of the reason they're getting rid of it. Besides why use OneDrive when Google provides 15Gb?

My last phone backup was 11 GB.

15 GB is not going to cut it for me. Since I have an Office 365 account, I get 1 TB of OneDrive space.

I have a 1TB cloud on my internet provider which will cover me but it's a shame if Samsung do away with the cloud.
I'm guessing I will lose my 15GB bonus lol

Yesterday used Google back up of my Note 20 Ultra to restore on regular Note 20 and pretty much everything restored. On some apps even app data restored (for example on some reddit apps, Fenix twitter app etc. Works on apps where developers use the right API in their apps and enabled this functionality).

Only thing didn't restore obviously was the One UI home screen which isn't a problem for me. That's not my main launcher and even if it was it takes little time to do the home screen again. Microsoft launcher the layout was automatically restored because Microsoft uses the right Android APIs. On Nova I had to manually backup on Note 20 Ultra and restore that backup on Note 20.

Phone backup = Used Google backup which restores messages, call history, apps etc.

Photos backup = Google photos, OneDrive, Amazon photos so nothing to restore.

Music = Spotify, YouTube music so nothing to restore.

Contacts, email, calendar = obviously all Google so nothing to restore here.

Passwords = Use cross platform password manager LastPass so just login to LastPass on new device and everything there and android auto fill using LastPass to login to apps if needed. Two factor codes are backed via authy app so just reauthorize authy and all the two factor codes are there.

Device settings = I usually uncheck this while restore since don't want the old phone settings messing up on new one. I like starting fresh for device settings like night mode, blue light filter, DND options or any other settings. Especially problematic on restoring on different manufacturers so general practice I don't restore this.

Benefits of being a Microsoft Alumni... I only pay $20/yr for the Family Plan. :D

Even if I didn't have that, it's the best deal around.

  • Always have the latest version of Office installed
  • Full Access to Office on the Web
  • Full version of Office on Mobile (Tablet and/or Phones)
  • Share with 5 other people
  • 1TB of OneDrive space
  • 60 Skype Minutes/mo to call anywhere(well, I don't use this part)

Not many (or any) other services offer this much for so little.

So with Samsung cloud going away do I lose the stuff that saved on my Samsung account ? I posted a picture so I don't have to name each category. I know I'd lose the photos which I already transferred to my computer. 20200901_083213.jpeg

That is the problem. I *am* using the OneDrive app. I have been for years. It's great for backing up my pictures as I take them. The problem arises that if you link your Samsung account to Microsoft, it no longer allows you to sync items from your SD card.

What does this mean? If you save your pictures to your SD card, you will not be able to save them to OneDrive as you take them. If you follow my link or read a little bit further down you will see a screen shot right if there app stating this.

How to fix this? I just unlinked the accounts and went back to using OneDrive as I have for years. Without being linked to my Samsung account the camera is allowed to both save to my SD card and back up real time.

Why am I concerned? If the Samsung cloud does shut down I will need a reliable way to back up my phone settings, call logs, messages, and call history. My picture back ups are more important to me, so I'm not willing to link Samsung to Microsoft until the issue is somehow resolved.

So to answer your comment. Yes, the OneDrive app does a great job of backing up your pictures real time as you take them. This has been a fantastic solution for years. I love it. It is totally independent of brand and platform. The issue is this very service we are taking about is disabled if you link your Samsung account while automatically saving pictures to your SD card.

Can I be an honorary family member?? LOL

Lol same here only pay $20 per year for the Microsoft 365 plan

But Google One is still my main backup service for everything even though I pay full price there monthly (cheap anyway). Much prefer the Google services over Microsoft. I still backup using Microsoft, Amazon as well but mostly as reductant copies.
