Samsung fans, why are you buying the HTC One instead of the S4?

I respectfully disagree. You are only referring to aesthetics, not actual quality. For example, the aluminum tends to scratch more than plastic. Plastic survives drops better. The removable back means phones like the S3, S4 are far more easily repaired than phones like the One.

I totally respect the fact that you PREFER aluminum to plastic but that hardly means it's built better.

Also, if what you are saying is true, I guess most people don't care about "build quality" as evidenced by sales of the Galaxy series vs. HTC.

Since the one hasn't launched yet it's impossible to see what people prefer yet. Yes plastic could be durable but anyone that closes their eyes and is handed a piece of plastic in one hand and aluminum in the other and is asked which feels better or more durable material I doubt many would say plastic.
We aren't talking about durability which can be argued to death We are talking about feeling cheap in your hand. No proof that plastic survives better. Depends on the type of drop and where it lands. I've used the galaxy 2 and immediately when I got it thought it was cheap feeling but at the time I did like the phone. I'm not going to argue this to death. You like plastic and I prefer the materials used to make a phone like the one. Since phones now are basically the same inside what more does a consumer really have to go by other than looks and small features like boom sound or feel, looks etc?

Who comprises "most" people in your statement above? Just curious.

Do a poll and ask? I did..I asked my friends and co workers which phone feels better and looks better and the majority even the galaxy fan boys and girls said HTC phones feel and look better. It's a choice though and maybe you prefer the plastic feel in your hand

I agree with your thoughts about looks. Man that aluminum One looks awesome. But I dont understand the above.

If both materials were at body temp such that no clue could be had by the difference in heat transfer between the device and your hand, and the weight was the same, the only way you could tell any difference would be by surface finish. Either material could be surface finished to feel like the other. How would you know?

If "feel and looks" determine quality, then I absolutely agree with you. I prefer the feel and look of the One to any Android phone ever. BUT, feel and looks do not determine quality. Poly-carbonate is every bit as durable, if not more, than aluminum. The S4 has a more advanced version of Gorilla glass than the One.

BOTTOM LINE: It is far too simplistic to state that an aluminum shell means the One has a better build quality than a poly-carbonate phone.

What evidence do you have that HTC has better build quality than Samsung besides your personal preference in choice of materials?

I don't have any "evidence". I have held the HTC One in hand and the S4 is supposedly a newer version of the S3. ( I'm assuming the S4 is of similar build as the S3) You can tell by holding them, looking at them and by the 200 reviews online that say the HTC has an awesome build quality. I am not putting down Samsung. They must be doing something right. They've sold a gazillion phones. But between the One and the S4 the build quality is very evident.

You mean you can tell that you PREFER metal to plastic but you cannot tell which one is actually built better. It could be made of metal and still be built like a POS. It's like owning a Range Rover. Gorgeous inside and out, great use of materials but always in the shop.

You mean, aestheticly it is different. Build quality, even if mentioned on 5 million websites, is not what they really were talking about. ;)

But I'm just busting your chops.

I'm considering a One because I like trying different UIs.

But let's not act like both phones don't have what could be perceived as "gimmicks". A "gimmick" is subjective to the user using it anyway, what might be a gimmick to you might be useful to others. I know I personally have no need for Boomsound and no one walks around with music blaring out of their phone's speakers, that's what headphones were made for.

You had me going for a minute. lol

You clearly misread his post. Here, I'll highlight it:

To me that reads as: Spec bump - Bigger screen, more MP in the camera, better processor. Gimmicks: OMG i can do stuff by simply gesturing wildly in front of the phone instead of simply swiping with my finger. OH! And watch this! When i look away this youtube video stops! Isn't that amazingly useful?! I am constantly in the situation where I need to look away from a supremely important youtube video and I wish my phone would pause it for me. Gawd knows how important youtube videos are and aint nobody got time to replay them if then need to look away for a sec.

But that's just my interpretation.

EXACTLY!!! Maybe to some those features may make some go oooohhh n aaaahhh. But will those features help me in my day to day life? At work n at home? Don't think so. And plastic is such a turn off.

So many arguing over build quality. My personal experience goes a bit like this.

Sat my og evo on my lap while driving, forgot, parked, got out and my phone fell breaking the screen. (plastic phone with no case)

Same phone (og evo) now with a case. I work construction and when I get to work I put my phone in its case and holster it. So I clicked it in and adjusted my shirt not realizing my tee was pinched in between the holster and case. Phone popped out, fell and broke again.

Daughters S3 feel about 18 inches and broke the screen on a linoleum floor.

Buddies S3 fell about 10 inches to the garage floor and broke the screen as well.

Now my aluminum body evo lte has took various spills. The most common (bad habit of mine) After talking while driving I put my phone on the seat in between my legs and forget about it. When I jump out of my truck it goes flying and lands on the ground. This has happened at least 5 times with no case... Not a scratch on it

Granted this is my own experience but for me at least it says a lot. If you made 2 phones exactly the same but one out of plastic and one out of aluminum. 100% of the time I would take the aluminum one and sacrificed a removable battery.
My HTC evo lte is almost a year old and not a scratch on it. Just saying

Screens like to break, that's what I'm getting from your experience. I've lost count of how many iPhones I've seen with busted up screens but they're everywhere. All cracked and beautiful in that aluminum unibody.

You can like and enjoy the aluminum all you want (my laptop is aluminum and I love it) but talking about how much "better" it is is really getting old. Have you watched the htc one drop tests?

Funny. In my case I see a lot more busted Android screens than iPhone screens. I guess it depends on where you are and what you're looking for.

I really don't need a drop test video to prove anything to me. Just saying in my personal exp the aluminum has proven to be more durable time and time again.

Can the auto pause be turned off?? Watching with freinds, or if I have music and I'm busy looking at or doing something else, might just wanna listen to it........then again my face won't be right in front of my screen, I do have really awesome speakers on my phone ;).............

I love how the Samsung loyalists keep throwing sales numbers around, who cares how many phones Samsung sells what does that have to do with what phone i want,i currently have the DNA,and when i compare phones in the store the screen is the first thing i notice, and until i see the S4 in person i will not pass judgement, materials, storage removable batteries mean nothing to me,but i work outside and compared my DNA to the S3/note2 the screens are not even close, maybe Samsung has improved their dim oversaturated Amlod display on the S4,and at least me who has far from perfect vision, can tell the difference in screen quality without a magnifying glass.

The s4 screen does not use the same penile matrix the s3 had. Let alone the difference the resolution change makes.

Yes it is part of the "Smart" features and they all can be turned on and off.

Well, in all fairness I would find smart pause to be quite useful, but the rest garbage. I'm sure it wastes a lot of internal storage (not a fan of SD cards) and in the end my opinion is that HTC did a nice job with sense and I find touch wizz way too different from stock( I have a N4 so I know what stock is like.

I've never gotten the bloated feeling about touchwiz that I got from sense.

Again, if that's your preference than more power to you but don't be ignorant of the information available or there.

Of course it can, unlike htc Samsung doesn't shove their "gimmicks" down your throat. That's why it's a ridiculous that people argue not getting the phone because of gimmicks

Yeah, I left the post as is for everyone's enjoyment... My auto correct seems to have a dirty mind as of late

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet, and I thought was relevant to the debate between Samsung and HTC is...

There are VERY FEW companies that can do hardware AND software. I can't really name any. Apple I would consider a hardware company that does occasional good software, but not always. Any PC maker should do everything they can to stay out of writing software, they're all really bad at it. Intel can't write software to save their company, same with nVidia or AMD. Microsoft should really stop making hardware, they just can't do it as well as Apple, Dell, HP, etc. I see HTC as a software company that occasionally does really nice hardware. Maybe I'm wrong and that's a new transition for them, but Sense has a lot of little well thought out things, like the ringer volume turning down when you pick up the phone, that's the kind of little user interface software detail that hardware companies never seem to understand, and those things are all over Sense. Sense is a little heavy, but that's the price you pay for outstanding UI like that. Now that they've cut the various devices, I'd like to see HTC refactor a lot of the Sense code that has to deal with various device resolutions all removed from the codebase. They could really speed and lighten up Sense with that effort.

One other thing I see Samsung is about to have a problem with is updates. HTC spotted that problem already and have been on a several year journey to make fewer devices that they can support better and with faster releases. Samsung is getting MORE and MORE devices, that's going to make it harder for them to get OS updates out to them. This is something that we'll all have to wait and see who wins in the next 6 months. I know historically I've seen better updates from HTC than I have Samsung with devices I've owned. The OG Evo was the first device to release Froyo, my Galaxy Tab never saw an update.

And lastly, I'm really looking forward to the boomsound speakers, they will make for a much better GPS experience in the car, as well as improved speaker phone, and then my phone can be a legitimate device for listening to music on a bike ride, which you shouldn't do with headphones.

They all do have their share of gimmicks though, HTC did 3D on one of the Evo's, meh. Zoe's may turn out to be a gimmick. It seems that a lot of users are pretty sure that video pausing when looking away will be more of an obstruction than a feature, and the penile :-) display has been more trouble than it's been worth apparently. I've had S3 owners say my Evo LTE's screen is better, when I thought they were about the same.

Updates have been much quicker than HTC as of late. And the fact they have tons of Galaxy phones won't matter as flagships will have priority. S3 , S4, and Note 2.

S4 is not the same penile display as S3 so........

I'm not saying S4 is better I like the ones form and will try it out
