The idea of a phone/tablet is ideal for me based on the way I use both technologies. But, I'm not going to pay $2000 for a first generation version. I might be willing to pay a high price later but right now I think $2000 is too high and likely this first version will be showing up a lot of kinks and quirks that will be eliminated from future iterations.

This is exactly the problem. It’s a prototype phone that shouldn’t even be released in this form at all.

But that's exactly the reason for the high price. They're only going to make a thousand or so of these phones. They're not for the average consumer yet. They're for rich tech people who will give them the feedback they need going forward.

The price is insane. But all of the flagship smartphones are trending that way. Makes me feel even better about my Moto X4 that I paid $149.99 for. The interesting thing will be too see how it changes the way consumers use their smartphone. There are some features of the Galaxy Fold that would be problematic for me.

You are not the target for this device. This is a device for the price insensitive market. I am not the target either, but I have friends who would not have any problem paying $2K for a fun new item. The Fold is a test bed for Samsung. They don't plan to sell a lot, but it helps them establish a leadership position among major vendors.

BTW, if you Lenovo is going to release a cheap screen folding Moto Razor think again. My guess will be the cost won't be that much cheaper than the Samsung.

People complaining about the price are hilarious. Do you all drive a manual transmission car with no power steering and no A/C? You can get sneakers at Walmart for probably like $40, but I bet you're wearing Nikes that cost 3 times that.

Put it into perspective, it's an upscale phone, it's not for everyone. You don't like it? You don't see the value in paying up for it? Then don't. Simple as that.

this is the price for the bleeding edge hardware if you so chose to get it. I think the old rule of don't get the first generation of a new form factors is key here. Let this ride and see what generation 2 has to offer.

True... It's expensive for most of us but there are people out there to whom this price is, well, cheap...

Not my style or price but I'll def enjoy watching others experiences with it. I'm very curious as to how well the hardware holds up over time.

12gb ram.
4,380maH battery.
That's what upping the price.

Also on the other post, I mentioned that phone prices are not going down. Look at the "S" series, Note and even Apple. The next gen may even cost more.

Apps may only play on part of the screen or have to be tablet mode.

No way the extra Memory or larger battery is worth that kind of money.

There is no way any phone should ever sell for 2K if they are trying to sell it to the general public. Hey cell phone makers, try finding a way to sell phones at a lower price point not higher. I know that they are trying to offer a lot of bells and whistles but the phones are getting more expensive and you all are going to end up pricing yourselves out of this market. #JustSaying

Within a few months, we all know Samsung will knock a few hundred dollars off the retail price. But, no, I would not pay that much with such hideously huge front screen bezels that I'd most likely be looking at 90% of the time. Fix that and add S pen support, then we'll revisit this topic.

I would have purchased this device if they would not have put a 4.6" screen on the front of the device. To me, with such a large surface and most of it is unusable is inconceivable. I mean, the front screen is the screen I would be using most often. I would not be unfolding the device every time I want to received an email, text messages, or RSS feed article, but with a 4.6" screen I might have to. I feel like I would be going backwards in time. I am not sure if they had to do that because of structural integrity of the device, but that small front screen is the reason why I will not be purchasing this device. A folding iPad mini that you can fit in your pocket and use as a phone is like having two products in one, and with the cost research and development and implementation, I feel like it would be worth under $2,000. That is, if it were built with present day consumer screen expectations fulfilled. The device is already a particular size, why not fill the front with screen, like just released Galaxy devices?

^^ This would be going backwards in time? You do realize this is a world first right?
Surely you can see the point he is trying to make. If you purchase the device, the "primary" screen (we are assuming the outside screen is the one that will be used most of the time) is significantly smaller than the screens we have been using in recent years. That's not to take away from the fact that this device is breaking new ground. It's OK to point out a weakness, and his point is valid.

Depends what phone you've been using. People in my office are still using small screen iPhones. I'm using the Note 9, so the front screen would be like the AOD to me when I check messages, etc. But might be ok. Not sure yet. I think I'd need to see it in person.

Exactly this.

So companies can't sell upper tier BMW's to the general public? Jeans that cost $200? Hell, desk chairs that cost $1000 when you can just get a $80 chair at Office Max. Every product can have tiers and this seems like something wealthy people can splurge on, or for the enthusiasts to just splurge. Not certain why people are offended at the price of a niche product. If a foldable phone ever becomes mainstream, the price will trickle down.

Again, as Samsung has said, they are not selling this to the standard phone buyer. The market for the Fold is to the luxury/price insensitive buyer. Samsung is also not trying to sell millions of these phones. This is a test bed release to establish Samsung in a high price market category.
