Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

How do you add a picture to a reply on here. Can it be done while on the note 3 or do you have to be on a home computer.

You can upload and post rather easily with Photobucket app from your phone.

You must use the AC Forums App is has the camera, and link on the lower right hand side of the screen. With the camera you can get pictures from your gallery or take a picture.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Marques Brownlee just named the Note 3 as the best smartphone camera on the market right now in a shoot-out between the top 5 smartphone cameras:
Top 5 Best Smartphone Cameras! - YouTube

This is good, but it sounds like the Note 3's video performance put it over the edge more so than its photos. Also, the Note 2 was regrettably not included in the comparison.

This doesn't surprise me much. The shooter on the note 3 is quite well. The old saying goes, the best camera is the one you have on you so fire away and enjoy folks.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Let me clear up the mega pixel thing once and for all. Will post this in new thread as well. Mega pixel means nothing unless you are printing a large print above 8x10 or cropping in close on image. A 13-14 mega pixel camera will not take any BETTER Photo than an 8 mega pixel camera or for that matter a 6 mega pixel camera unless pixel peeping. What matters in ALL of this is the lens apature and your ability to hold steady.

Let's talk photography to understand. First and foremost lighting is everything!! If you want great photos don't take inside in low light situations. If your going to do this put phone on anti shake or flash. This will help prevent those blurry shots.
Even high dollar dslr cannot take indoor photos well unless using the right lens, high iso (which causes grain in photos) slow shutter speed on tripod or flash. All these play hudge part. Did you noticed I didn't include mega pixel in that list!!!!!!!!

So needless to say the iPhone camera has a 2.0 to 1.8 apature on its camera. This allows tons of light into the photo especially when taking shots indoors. To be honest not sure what the apature is on note 3. If it's higher than a 2.0 let's say 2.8 or 3.5 apature then YES the iPhone is going to take better photos in doors. More light equals better photos.

We haven't even started talking about white balance yet!!!!

Numerous sources (including iMore) are reporting the 5s has an aperture of f/2.2 which is no way near f/1.8.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Correct if not a 1.8 and both are 2.2 then have to start looking at noise reduction software, ligjitng, along with anti shake software. Could also nit pick who makes the lens. However mega pixel has nothing to do with the quality in such a small photo

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Ansel Adams said it best. It comes down to a man's understanding of his tools. You don't need the best camera to take good shots. You need a complete understanding of how the camera works that you have. That is why you can see a variant of picture quality from different phones. No amount of software or hardware can replace a full understanding of what you have. Yes, the note 3 has a fabulous camera for a cell phone as do many high end phones for what it is. Don't be fooled, put a photographer with a subpar camera and give a layman a better camera and the photographer will always win.

It doesn't matter what you have to take shots, just get to know it well and understand everything you can do to manipulate the shots and what that effect will produce in that given environment. You can take the top 10 phones today and with a understanding of them, get great shots from them all. If you feel you are getting poor shots, I encourage you to take a few weekends and get to know what tool you are using.

While I agree with this I do wonder how many people with an iPhone 4s, 5/s are having this same discussion. Its a matter of taking that same person and giving her a variety of camera phones, of which she knows nothing about, and seeing how photos of the same subject come out. There will be differences because of the hardware's ability. I have a feeling this discussion is more about that line of thinking than how well she knows the ins and outs of each camera.

To a point. I have seen a thread on XDA eluding the same thing. But then I see in that thread these low light pics that look pretty darn good. Usually when a camera is bad [moto x pre update] it is bad. I find way to many spectacular shots from myself and others to conclude that. There may me some issues and maybe a software update is needed? I would happily accept all that. But evidence suggest otherwise.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

While I am a photographer and agree with general philosophy of photography rules and learning your tools, I think for the average smartphone user, what photographers think is irrelevant to them, because they didn't buy a consumer device just so they have to "learn" photography--they just want to snap photos. The camera makers and phone makers know this very well, so they try to make their consumer products as *****-proof as possible, making them fully automatic in their default modes so that you can just snap shots and not have to think about any of the photography rules. I mean they even include composition guide/grids in some of the cameras--how much more *****-proof can you get? So looking at the issue from that point-of-view, the criticism of the sub-par low-light performance (regardless if it's due to camera or app) is valid, since the typical consumer does not want to hear that they have to learn photography skills and understand how photography actually works. They don't care about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, lighting, composition, white balance, lens distortion, etc. So the consumer market, companies have to distinguish themselves by creating the most seamless, effortless, and *****-proof automatic experience in order to win the competition. In this specific area of smartphone photography, whichever company can allow the consumer to just snap a shot and get great results, regardless of the lighting condition, or whether the user has shaky hands, or the subject is moving, will win.

With all that said, the photographer in me (and as a person who's always striving to better myself in everything I do), thinks that if there's anything of some level of importance to you, then you have these choices:

1) Blame the limitations of the product and fume and pout and still not get better results because you refuse to find solutions to your problem.

2) You jump ship and switch to a product that's even more *****-proof so you don't have to exert yourself in making any efforts to research, learn, and practice something that you care about at some level.

3) Learn to use your tool properly. Every tool has its strengths and weaknesses, and if you just devote a bit of effort to learn and practice, you will get far better results. Today's high-tech gadgets are already damn amazing in terms of how far we've come in just the last decade or so, and we are in fact, quite spoiled already. Everything we b-tch and moan about in this forum are first-world problems. The camera on the Note 3 would seem like something out of a science-fiction movie to photographers from the past decades. So seriously, if you wanted to, you can take awesome photos with the Note 3 if you spent the time learning the basics of photography. You can bypass Samsung's camera app and use a different one that doesn't over-process your low-light shots, and then use good digital darkroom techniques to process them yourself with a dedicated photography software like Lightroom or Photoshop (or cheaper equivalents--there are lots of them out there). Basically, if you don't want to switch phones and still want your photos to look awesome, then learn photography.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Yeah, wasn't that a joke! Above a 1020? C'mon Marques.

Maybe but it allows for more control with all its features and it has 4K. He said he weighted video more because he's a video maker

I don't agree with how much importance he places on the 4K video. To most people, 4K video is totally irrelevant to their needs. But he did deduct a point for the missing night mode, and perhaps he should have deducted one more point for the aggressive low-light processing Samsung's camera app does. To be fair though, even with more points deducted, Note 3's camera is still one of the best in cutting-edge smartphones, so when people say that it "sucks," it sounds like hyperbole, ignorance, and lack of photography understanding.
